Implementation and Analysis of Reversible logic Based Arithmetic Logic Unit
There is a tremendous growth in fabrication from small scale integration (SSI) to giant scale integration (GSI). It however raises a question of sustainability of Moore's law due to almost intolerable levels of power consumption. Researchers have invented a lot of methods to reduce power consumption and recent technologies are switching to reversible logic. Reversible logic has various applications in fields of computer graphics, optical information processing, quantum computing, DNA computing, ultra low power CMOS design and communication. Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) is considered to be the basic building block of a CPU in the computing environment and portability in computing system highly demands reversible logic based ALU. Modern processors usually have a word length of 32 or 64 bits. Divide and conquer approach principle cascades n number of 1 bit ALU to implement n bit ALU. Several researchers have proposed 1-bit ALU design using various reversible logic gates. This paper aims at categorizing various ways of implementation in VHDL using Xilinx ISE design suit 14.2 tool and comparative analysis of existing 1 bit ALU designs in terms of optimization metrics like power consumption, number of gates, number of constant inputs, number of garbage outputs and quantum cost. ALU realized using carry save adder block is found to be most optimum design in terms of gate count and quantum cost
Hybrid fuzzy particle swarm optimization approach for reactive power optimization
This paper presents a new approach to the optimal reactive power planning based on fuzzy logic and particle swarm optimization (PSO). The objectives are to minimize real power loss and to improve the voltage profile of a given interconnected power system. Transmission loss is expressed in terms of voltage increments by relating the control variables i.e. reactive var generations by the generators, tap positions of transformers and reactive power injections by the shunt capacitors. The objective function and the constraints are modeled by fuzzy sets. A term ‘sensitivity’ at each bus is defined which depends on variation of real power loss with respect to the voltage at that bus. Based on the Fuzzy membership values of the sensitivity, corrective action at a particular bus is taken i.e. shunt capacitors are installed at the candidate buses based on real power loss and sets of solution. Then, PSO is applied to get final solution. PSO is used for optimal setting of transformer tap positions and reactive generations of generators. The solutions obtained by this method is compared with the solutions obtained by other evolutionary algorithms like genetic algorithm (GA), differential evolution (DE) and particle swarm optimization (PSO)
Asthma in the elderly: underperceived, underdiagnosed and undertreated; a community survey
AbstractBronchial asthma is now increasingly recognized in the elderly and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The aims of this study were two-fold: first, to assess the prevalence and, second, to evaluate diagnostic awareness, therapeutic management and patient perception of bronchial asthma among elderly patients in the community.From the age-sex register of an urban general practice in NE England, 2004 patients aged >65 years were eligible for inclusion. Response to an initial screening questionnaire on respiratory symptomatology was 68% (n = 1362). Of these, 869 patients had respiratory symptoms: 390 voluntarily agreed to be evaluated further including assessment of airway physiology. In this group 369390 had obstructive spirometry and, of these, 95 patients fulfilled clinical and physiological criteria of bronchial asthma. Prevalence of asthma within this age cohort was minimally and rather crudely assigned at 4.5% (952004).Among the 95 patients so-defined patients with asthma [age 70 ± 8 years (mean ± sd), FEV1 = 0·96 ± 0.41, 33 male, 75 life-long non-smokers], subjective awareness, perception and attribution of pulmonary symptoms were poor. Further, despite tangible evidence of reversible and significant airflow limitation, only 21 were receiving inhaled glucocorticoid therapy (median daily dose 400 μg).Asthma in the elderly remains poorly perceived, poorly recognized and suboptimally treated. These findings are particularly apposite in the light of current epidemiological trends in asthma mortality and morbidity in elderly age cohorts
Active power regulation of hydro dominating energy system using IDD optimized FPA
In this paper an attempt is made to propose the different models of control and design such as integral derivative (ID), proportional integral derivative (PID) and integral double derivative (IDD) effectively optimized through flower pollination algorithm (FPA) for active power regulation of modern energy system having hydro dominating areas. At first, the performance of FPA-ID, FPA-PID and FPA-IDD founded LFC are evaluated for standard load change in one control area and their performance for system model is judged on the basis of inverse time multiplied absolute error (ITAE). The results obtained show the advancement of FPA-IDD over other designs for hydro dominating energy system. The performance of the control lacks in minimizing system overshoot, oscillations and settling time due to large responding time of hydro turbines. Hence, the collective operation of unified power flow control (UPFC) in series with tie-line and active power support from redox flow battery is installed in the hydro dominating energy system. The significant improvement in system results are obtained by installing the UPFC and RFB in system model. Further enhancement in the system results are achieved by recalculating the gains of IDD with the help of FPA with positive support from RFB and UPFC. Use of different coloured ovitraps in the surveillance of Aedes mosquitoes in an arid-urban area of western Rajasthan, India
Background & objectives: In the absence of any commercially available dengue vaccine or antiviral therapy, controlling the primary mosquito vector, Aedes aegypti, is currently the only means to prevent dengue outbreaks. Ovitraps are being employed as a sensitive method for detecting the presence of Ae. aegypti. Size, colour, material, paddle and use of oviposition attractant have been reported as important factors influencing the efficacy of ovitraps.
Methods: For the study of coloured ovitraps baited with grass infusion, 24 households were randomly selected in a locality and five ovitraps/premises were installed. Weekly ovitrap surveys were conducted during the study for four times. Ovitrap data were analyzed on the basis of its location, day-wise percent positivity, presence of eggs laid and inference of different ovitrap parameters were drawn.
Results: Grass infusion, used in the ovitraps has highest attractiveness on Day 6 in comparison to other days.
Percent positivity of different coloured ovitraps revealed that red coloured ovitraps have highest positivity (92.7%), followed by black and orange (91.7% each), green (76.3%) and transparent (45.8%). The individual colour-wise ovitrap positivity revealed that the highest ovitrap positivity on Day 1 was recorded for black colour (21.8%), which on D2 and D3, in case of red colour (37.5 and 26%). However, on D4, D5 and D6 highest number of
positive ovitraps was recorded in orange coloured (12.5, 21.9 and 31.3%, respectively) and on D7 highest number of positive ovitraps were recorded in transparent (21.9%), followed by green coloured ovitrap (20.8%). The overall location-wise ovitraps positivity revealed that highest positivity was recorded among the ovitraps installed inside bathrooms (92.0%), followed by bedrooms (85.0%), lobby (66.7%) and stores (48.3%).
Interpretation & conclusion: The study revealed that for immediate detection of the presence of gravid females in a particular locality during epidemics, the black coloured ovitraps may be useful, however, in normal situations for surveillance of the vector species, the orange coloured ovitraps might be more suitable. Bathrooms were found to be the highest positive location for pitching ovitraps
Super Annigeri 1 and improved JG 74: Two Fusarium wilt-resistant introgression lines developed using marker-assisted backcrossing approach in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.)
Annigeri 1 and JG 74 are elite high yielding desi cultivars of chickpea with medium maturity duration and extensively cultivated in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh, respectively. Both cultivars, in recent years, have become susceptible to race 4 of Fusarium wilt (FW). To improve Annigeri 1 and JG 74, we introgressed a genomic region conferring resistance against FW race 4 (foc4) through marker-assisted backcrossing using WR 315 as the donor parent. For foreground selection, TA59, TA96, TR19 and TA27 markers were used at Agricultural Research Station, Kalaburagi, while GA16 and TA96 markers were used at Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Jabalpur. Background selection using simple sequence repreats (SSRs) for the cross Annigeri 1 × WR 315 in BC1F1 and BC2F1 lines resulted in 76–87% and 90–95% recurrent parent genome recovery, respectively. On the other hand, 90–97% genome was recovered in BC3F1 lines in the case of cross JG 74 × WR 315. Multilocation evaluation of 10 BC2F5 lines derived from Annigeri 1 provided one superior line referred to as Super Annigeri 1 with 8% increase in yield and enhanced disease resistance over Annigeri 1. JG 74315-14, the superior line in JG 74 background, had a yield advantage of 53.5% and 25.6% over the location trial means in Pantnagar and Durgapura locations, respectively, under Initial Varietal Trial of All India Coordinated Research Project on Chickpea. These lines with enhanced resistance and high yield performance are demonstration of successful deployment of molecular breeding to develop superior lines for FW resistance in chickpea
Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant

Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV
A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The
analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC
from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an
integrated luminosity of 4.8 inverse femtobarns. Limits are set on the cross
section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected
exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the
standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The
analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model
Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The
largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is
observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance
of 3.1 sigma. The global significance of observing an excess with a local
significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is
estimated to be 1.8 sigma. More data are required to ascertain the origin of

Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS
We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a
significant distance from their production point into a final state containing
charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is
conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV
and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS
detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles
is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We
observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of
supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the
neutralino lifetime. Limits are presented for different squark and neutralino
masses, enabling extension of the limits to a variety of other models.Comment: 8 pages plus author list (20 pages total), 8 figures, 1 table, final
