    Analysis of air-water two phase natural circulation flow by using RELAP5/MOD3

    Paper presented at the 5th International Conference on Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, South Africa, 1-4 July, 2007.Air-water two phase natural circulation flow in the T-HERMES (Thermo-Hydraulic Evaluation of Reactor cooling Mechanism by External Self-induced flow)-1D experiment has been verified and evaluated by RELAP5/MOD3 computer code. The RELAP5 results have shown that an increase in the coolant inlet area leads to an increase in the water circulation mass flow rate. However, the water outlet area has no influence on the water circulation mass flow rate. As the coolant outlet moves to a lower position, the water circulation mass flow rate decreases. The water level has no influence on the water circulation mass flow rate

    Exclusion statistics: A resolution of the problem of negative weights

    We give a formulation of the single particle occupation probabilities for a system of identical particles obeying fractional exclusion statistics of Haldane. We first derive a set of constraints using an exactly solvable model which describes an ideal exclusion statistics system and deduce the general counting rules for occupancy of states obeyed by these particles. We show that the problem of negative probabilities may be avoided with these new counting rules.Comment: REVTEX 3.0, 14 page

    Do anyons, dynamically realized by the field theoretic Chern-Simons construction, obey fractional exclusion statistics? We find that they do if the statistical interaction between anyons and anti-anyons is taken into account. For this anyon model, we show perturbatively that the exchange statistical parameter of anyons is equal to the exclusion statistical parameter. We obtain the same result by applying the relation between the exclusion statistical parameter and the second virial coefficient in the non-relativistic limit.Comment: 9 pages, latex, IFT-498-UN

    Limitations of di/dt technique in DC line protection

    Protection issues are major challenges in realising multiterminal (MT) HVDC systems. In this paper, the findings of an investigation carried out on a di/dt based protection technique with the view to ascertaining its suitability for the protection of DC lines are presented. Firstly the main issues regarding the protection of MT-HVDC system are explored and thereafter the di/dt protection technique is evaluated. Some of the limitations of di/dt protection technique were due to the effect of travelling waves and oscillations. These lead to errors in estimating the actual di/dt since the resulting fault current profile may attain its local maximum or minimum before or during the time window set for the measurement. This is particularly the case during directional comparison. Simulations have been carried out in PSCAD and the results presented show that the di/dt protection technique will not be a reliable method for the protection of DC lines, in particular for the protection of DC grid

    Statistical mechanics of semiflexible ribbon polymers

    The statistical mechanics of a ribbon polymer made up of two semiflexible chains is studied using both analytical techniques and simulation. The system is found to have a crossover transition at some finite temperature, from a type of short range order to a fundamentally different sort of short range order. In the high temperature regime, the 2-point correlation functions of the object are identical to worm-like chains, while in the low temperature regime they are different due to a twist structure. The crossover happens when the persistence length of individual strands becomes comparable to the thickness of the ribbon. In the low temperature regime, the ribbon is observed to have a novel ``kink-rod'' structure with a mutual exclusion of twist and bend in contrast to smooth worm-like chain behaviour. This is due to its anisotropic rigidity and corresponds to an {\it infinitely} strong twist-bend coupling. The double-stranded polymer is also studied in a confined geometry. It is shown that when the polymer is restricted in a particular direction to a size less than the bare persistence length of the individual strands, it develops zigzag conformations which are indicated by an oscillatory tangent-tangent correlation function in the direction of confinement. Increasing the separation of the confining plates leads to a crossover to the free behaviour, which takes place at separations close to the bare persistence length. These results are expected to be relevant for experiments which involve complexation of two or more stiff or semiflexible polymers.Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures. PRE (in press
