Z boson production in p+Pb collisions at sNNâ=5.02 TeV measured with the ATLAS detector
The ATLAS Collaboration has measured the inclusive production of Z bosons via their decays into electron and muon pairs in p+Pb collisions at â sNN = 5.02 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The measurements are made using data corresponding to integrated luminosities of 29.4 nbâ1 and 28.1 nbâ1 for Z â ee and Z â ””, respectively. The results from the two channels are consistent and combined to obtain a cross section times the Z â `` branching ratio, integrated over the rapidity region |y â Z | < 3.5, of 139.8 ± 4.8 (stat.) ± 6.2 (syst.) ± 3.8 (lumi.) nb. Differential cross sections are presented as functions of the Z boson rapidity and transverse momentum, and compared with models based on parton distributions both with and without nuclear corrections. The centrality dependence of Z boson production in p+Pb collisions is measured and analyzed within the framework of a standard Glauber model and the modelâs extension for fluctuations of the underlying nucleon-nucleon scattering cross sectionFil: Aad, G.. Measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry parameter αb and the helicity amplitudes for the decay Î0bâJ/Ï+Î0 with the ATLAS detector
A measurement of the parity-violating decay asymmetry parameter, αb, and the helicity amplitudes for the decay Îb0âJ/Ï(ÎŒ+ÎŒ-)Î0(pÏ-) is reported. The analysis is based on 1400 Îb0 and ÎÂŻb0 baryons selected in 4.6ââfb-1 of proton-proton collision data with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. By combining the Îb0 and ÎÂŻb0 samples under the assumption of CP conservation, the value of αb is measured to be 0.30±0.16(stat)±0.06(syst). This measurement provides a test of theoretical models based on perturbative QCD or heavy-quark effective theory.Fil: F. Monticelli.Fil: Atlas Collaboration
Measurement of the production of a W boson in association with a charm quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector
The production of a W boson in association with a single charm quark is studied using 4.6 fb^-1 of pp collision data at sqrt(s)=7 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. In events in which a W boson decays to an electron or muon, the charm quark is tagged either by its semileptonic decay to a muon or by the presence of a charmed meson. The integrated and differential cross sections as a function of the pseudorapidity of the lepton from the W-boson decay are measured. Results are compared to the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD calculations obtained from various parton distribution function parameterisations. The ratio of the strange-to-down sea-quark distributions is determined to be 0.96 +0.26 -0.30 at Q^2=1.9 GeV^2, which supports the hypothesis of an SU(3)-symmetric composition of the light-quark sea. Additionally, the cross-section ratio sigma(W^+ + bar{c})/sigma(W^- + c) is compared to the predictions obtained using parton distribution function parameterisations with different assumptions about the s-bar{s} quark asymmetry.Fil: ATLAS Collaboration, G. International Guillain-Barré Syndrome Outcome Study (IGOS): protocol of a prospective observational cohort study on clinical and biological predictors of disease course and outcome in Guillain-Barré syndrome
Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute polyradiculoneuropathy with a highly variable clinical presentation, course, and outcome. The factors that determine the clinical variation of GBS are poorly understood which complicates the care and treatment of individual patients. The protocol of the ongoing International GBS Outcome Study (IGOS), a prospective, observational, multi-centre cohort study that aims to identify the clinical and biological determinants and predictors of disease onset, subtype, course and outcome of GBS is presented here. Patients fulfilling the diagnostic criteria for GBS, regardless of age, disease severity, variant forms, or treatment, can participate if included within two weeks after onset of weakness. Information about demography, preceding infections, clinical features, diagnostic findings, treatment, course and outcome is collected. In addition, cerebrospinal fluid and serial blood samples for serum and DNA is collected at standard time points. The original aim was to include at least 1000 patients with a follow-up of 1-3 years. Data are collected via a web-based data entry system and stored anonymously. IGOS started in May 2012 and by January 2017 included more than 1400 participants from 143 active centres in 19 countries across 5 continents. The IGOS data/biobank is available for research projects conducted by expertise groups focusing on specific topics including epidemiology, diagnostic criteria, clinimetrics, electrophysiology, antecedent events, antibodies, genetics, prognostic modelling, treatment effects and long-term outcome of GBS. The IGOS will help to standardize the international collection of data and biosamples for future research of GBS. ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT01582763
Search for dark matter in events with heavy quarks and missing transverse momentum in collisions with the ATLAS detector
This article reports on a search for dark matter pair production in association with bottom or top quarks in 20.3 fbâ1 of pp collisions collected at sâ=8 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events with large missing transverse momentum are selected when produced in association with high-momentum jets of which one or more are identified as jets containing b -quarks. Final states with top quarks are selected by requiring a high jet multiplicity and in some cases a single lepton. The data are found to be consistent with the Standard Model expectations and limits are set on the mass scale of effective field theories that describe scalar and tensor interactions between dark matter and Standard Model particles. Limits on the dark-matter?nucleon cross-section for spin-independent and spin-dependent interactions are also provided. These limits are particularly strong for low-mass dark matter. Using a simplified model, constraints are set on the mass of dark matter and of a coloured mediator suitable to explain a possible signal of annihilating dark matter.Fil: G. Aad. Measurement of Ï c1 and Ï c2 production with sâ = 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS
The prompt and non-prompt production cross-sections for the Ï c1 and Ï c2 charmonium states are measured in pp collisions at sâ = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using 4.5 fbâ1 of integrated luminosity. The Ï c states are reconstructed through the radiative decay Ï c â J/ÏÎł (with J/Ï â ÎŒ + ÎŒ â) where photons are reconstructed from Îł â e + e â conversions. The production rate of the Ï c2 state relative to the Ï c1 state is measured for prompt and non-prompt Ï c as a function of J/Ï transverse momentum. The prompt Ï c cross-sections are combined with existing measurements of prompt J/Ï production to derive the fraction of prompt J/Ï produced in feed-down from Ï c decays. The fractions of Ï c1 and Ï c2 produced in b-hadron decays are also measured
Search for squarks and gluinos in events with isolated leptons, jets and missing transverse momentum at sâ=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector
The results of a search for supersymmetry in final states containing at least one isolated lepton (electron or muon), jets and large missing transverse momentum with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider are reported. The search is based on proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy sâ=8 TeV collected in 2012, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20 fbâ1. No significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed. Limits are set on supersymmetric particle masses for various supersymmetric models. Depending on the model, the search excludes gluino masses up to 1.32 TeV and squark masses up to 840 GeV. Limits are also set on the parameters of a minimal universal extra dimension model, excluding a compactification radius of 1/R c = 950 GeV for a cut-off scale times radius (ÎR c) of approximately 30
Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections for Higgs boson production in the diphoton decay channel at sâ=8 TeV with ATLAS
Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections are presented for Higgs boson production in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sâ=8 TeV. The analysis is performed in the H â γγ decay channel using 20.3 fbâ1 of data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The signal is extracted using a fit to the diphoton invariant mass spectrum assuming that the width of the resonance is much smaller than the experimental resolution. The signal yields are corrected for the effects of detector inefficiency and resolution. The pp â H â γγ fiducial cross section is measured to be 43.2 ±9.4(stat.) ââ2.9 +â3.2 (syst.) ±1.2(lumi)fb for a Higgs boson of mass 125.4GeV decaying to two isolated photons that have transverse momentum greater than 35% and 25% of the diphoton invariant mass and each with absolute pseudorapidity less than 2.37. Four additional fiducial cross sections and two cross-section limits are presented in phase space regions that test the theoretical modelling of different Higgs boson production mechanisms, or are sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model. Differential cross sections are also presented, as a function of variables related to the diphoton kinematics and the jet activity produced in the Higgs boson events. The observed spectra are statistically limited but broadly in line with the theoretical expectations

Measurement of the top pair production cross section in 8 TeV proton-proton collisions using kinematic information in the lepton plus jets final state with ATLAS
A measurement is presented of the inclusive production
cross-section in collisions at a center-of-mass energy of TeV
using data collected by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider.
The measurement was performed in the lepton+jets final state using a data set
corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb. The cross-section
was obtained using a likelihood discriminant fit and -jet identification was
used to improve the signal-to-background ratio. The inclusive
production cross-section was measured to be
pb assuming a top-quark mass of 172.5 GeV, in good agreement with the
theoretical prediction of pb. The production cross-section in the fiducial region
determined by the detector acceptance is also reported.Comment: Published version, 19 pages plus author list (35 pages total), 3
