    Antiferromagnetic vs ferromagnetic interactions and spin-glass-like behavior in ruthenates

    We have made a series of gradient-corrected relativistic full-potential density-functional calculation for Ca-substituted and hole-doped SrRuO3_3 in para, ferro, and AA-, CC-, and GG-type antiferromagnetic states. Magnetic phase-diagram data for Sr1x_{1-x}Cax_xRuO3_3 at 0 K are presented. Neutron diffraction measurement combined with total energy calculations show that spin-glass behavior with short-range antiferromagnetic interactions rules in CaRuO3_3. The substitution of Sr by Ca in SrRuO3_3 decreases the ferromagnetic interaction and enhances the GG-type antiferromagnetic interaction; the GG-AF state is found to stabilize around xx = 0.75 consistent with experimental observations.     On the variability of simulated source-receptor relationships for sulfur deposition

    The use of Lagrangian models to estimate source-receptor relationships for ambient SO 4 = concentrations and S deposition has become fairly widespread over the past several years. This paper addresses the sensitivity of long-term simulations of a Lagrangian S transport and deposition model to actual variations in SO 2 emissions and meteorological conditions. The variations of predicted source-receptor relationships due to (1) the inclusion of day to day variations in emissions strength as opposed to the use of the annual average daily emission rate and (2) year-to-year variations in meteorological conditions were studied to identify causes of uncertainty in a Lagrangian model. The results suggested that adding information on day to day emission variations for a specific point source resulted in variations in estimated S wet deposition of the order of only 20% within 500 km of the source.Year-to-year variations in meteorological conditions, on the other hand, resulted in variations in predicted S wet deposition of the order of 50% for some receptors.     Measurement of E2 transition strengths in Mg32,34

    The degree of collectivity in the neutron-rich nuclei Mg32 and Mg34 has been determined via intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation in inverse kinematics. Measured energies of the first excited 2+ states and reduced electric quadrupole transition probabilities B(E2;0g.s.+→21+) are presented for Mg32 and Mg34. The results agree with previous measurements and confirm the placement of both nuclei within the "island of inversion.

    Comparison of soft and hard tissue ablation with sub-ps and ns pulse lasers

    Tissue ablation with ultrashort laser pulses offers several unique advantages. The nonlinear energy deposition is insensitive to tissue type, allowing this tool to be used for soft and hard tissue ablation. The localized energy deposition lead to precise ablation depth and minimal collateral damage. This paper reports on efforts to study and demonstrate tissue ablation using an ultrashort pulse laser. Ablation efficiency and extent of collateral damage for 0.3 ps and 1000 ps duration laser pulses are compared. Temperature measurements of the rear surface of a tooth section is also presented

    B(E3;01+→31-) transition matrix elements have been measured for even-mass Xe124-134 nuclei using subbarrier Coulomb excitation in inverse kinematics. The trends in energy E(3-) and B(E3;01+→31-) excitation strengths are well reproduced using phenomenological models based on a strong coupling picture with a soft quadrupole mode and an increasing occupation of the intruder h11/2 orbital
