    Finite size scaling in the 2D XY-model and generalized universality

    In recent works (BHP), a generalized universality has been proposed, linking phenomena as dissimilar as 2D magnetism and turbulence. To test these ideas, we performed a MC study of the 2D XY-model. We found that the shape of the probability distribution function for the magnetization M is non Gaussian and independent of the system size --in the range of the lattice sizes studied-- below the Kosterlitz-Thoules temperature. However, the shape of these distributions does depend on the temperature, contrarily to the BHP's claim. This behavior is successfully explained by using an extended finite-size scaling analysis and the existence of bounds for M.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett.     Наведено основні напрями наукових досліджень установ НАН України з проблеми збереження навколишнього середовища і сталого розвитку України, що виконувались наприкінці ХХ та на початку ХХІ століть в світлі рішень Конференції ООН з навколишнього середовища і розвитку у Ріо-де-Жанейро (червень 1992 р.) та Всесвітнього саміту зі сталого розвитку в Йоганнесбурзі (26 серпня — 4 вересня 2002 р.). На основі узагальнення результатів опитування установ НАН України в 2005 році проведено кількісний (наукометричний) аналіз їх участі у вирішенні зазначеної міждисциплінарної проблеми за п’ятирічний період за рядом показників (фінансове і кадрове забезпечення досліджень, використання їх результатів, патентно-ліцензійна та видавнича діяльність тощо) і сформульовано пропозиції щодо здійснення відповідних заходів з підвищення ефективності використання фінансових і матеріальних ресурсів при виконанні наукових досліджень з проблеми, підвищення їх координації та результативності.Приведены основные направления научных исследований учреждений НАН Украины по проблеме сохранения окружающей среды и стойкого развития Украины, которые выполнялись в конце ХХ и в начале XXI столетий в свете решений Конференции ООН по окружающей среде и развитию в Рио-де-Жанейро (июнь 1992 г.) и Всемирного саммита по устойчивому развитию в Иоганнесбурге (26 августа — 4 сентября 2002 г.). На основе обобщения результатов опроса учреждений НАН Украины в 2005 году проведен количественный (наукометрический) анализ их участия в решении указанной междисциплинарной проблемы за пятилетний период по ряду показателей (финансовое и кадровое обеспечение исследований, использование их результатов, патентно-лицензионная и издательская деятельность и др.) и сформулированы предложения о выполнении соответствующих мероприятий по повышению эффективности использования финансовых и материальных ресурсов при выполнении научных исследований по проблеме, повышению их координации и результативности.Main areas for research in institutes of the Ukrainian NAS are shown, devoted to environmental protection and sustained development in Ukraine, performed at the end of XX and the beginning of XXI centuries in light of the decision taken by the UN Conference in Rio de Janeiro (June 1992) and the World Summit on Sustained Development in Johannesburg (26 August – 4 September 2002). On the basis of results from a survey on institutes of the Ukrainian NAS, conducted in 2005, a scientometric analysis of their contributions in solving the above interdisciplinary problem is made, covering the 5-year period, by several indicators (research funding and personnel, applications of results, patenting, licensing, printing and publishing etc.), and measures are offered to enhance the efficiency of relevant research in terms of resource utilization, coordination and produced results

    Photonic band structure of highly deformable, self-assembling systems

    We calculate the photonic band structure at normal incidence of highly deformable, self-assembling systems - cholesteric elastomers subjected to external stress. Cholesterics display brilliant reflection and lasing owing to gaps in their photonic band structure. The band structure of cholesteric elastomers varies sensitively with strain, showing new gaps opening up and shifting in frequency. A novel prediction of a total band gap is made, and is expected to occur in the vicinity of the previously observed de Vries bandgap, which is only for one polarisation

    Broad-scale patterns of invertebrate richness and community composition in temporary rivers: effects of flow intermittence

    Temporary rivers are increasingly common freshwater ecosystems, but there have been no global syntheses of their community patterns. In this study, we examined the responses of aquatic invertebrate communities to flow intermittence in 14 rivers from multiple biogeographic regions covering a wide range of flow intermittence and spatial arrangements of perennial and temporary reaches. Hydrological data were used to describe flow intermittence (FI, the proportion of the year without surface water) gradients. Linear mixed-effects models were used to examine the relationships between FI and community structure and composition. We also tested if communities at the most temporary sites were nested subsets of communities at the least temporary and perennial sites. Taxon richness decreased as FI increased and invertebrate communities became dominated by ubiquitous taxa. The number of resilient taxa (with high dispersal capacities) decreased with increased FI, whereas the number of resistant taxa (with adaptations to desiccation) was not related to FI. River-specific and river-averaged model comparisons indicated most FI-community relationships did not differ statistically among rivers. Community nestedness along FI gradients was detected in most rivers and there was little or no influence of the spatial arrangement of perennial and temporary reaches. These results indicate that FI is a primary driver of aquatic communities in temporary rivers, regardless of the biogeographic species pool. Community responses are largely due to resilience rather than resistance mechanisms. However, contrary to our expectations, resilience was not strongly influenced by spatial fragmentation patterns, suggesting that colonist sources other than adjacent perennial reaches were important. © 2013 The Authors

    Water-like anomalies for core-softened models of fluids: One dimension

    We use a one-dimensional (1d) core-softened potential to develop a physical picture for some of the anomalies present in liquid water. The core-softened potential mimics the effect of hydrogen bonding. The interest in the 1d system stems from the facts that closed-form results are possible and that the qualitative behavior in 1d is reproduced in the liquid phase for higher dimensions. We discuss the relation between the shape of the potential and the density anomaly, and we study the entropy anomaly resulting from the density anomaly. We find that certain forms of the two-step square well potential lead to the existence at T=0 of a low-density phase favored at low pressures and of a high-density phase favored at high pressures, and to the appearance of a point CC' at a positive pressure, which is the analog of the T=0 ``critical point'' in the 1d1d Ising model. The existence of point CC' leads to anomalous behavior of the isothermal compressibility KTK_T and the isobaric specific heat CPC_P.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figure

    Origins of the Ambient Solar Wind: Implications for Space Weather

    The Sun's outer atmosphere is heated to temperatures of millions of degrees, and solar plasma flows out into interplanetary space at supersonic speeds. This paper reviews our current understanding of these interrelated problems: coronal heating and the acceleration of the ambient solar wind. We also discuss where the community stands in its ability to forecast how variations in the solar wind (i.e., fast and slow wind streams) impact the Earth. Although the last few decades have seen significant progress in observations and modeling, we still do not have a complete understanding of the relevant physical processes, nor do we have a quantitatively precise census of which coronal structures contribute to specific types of solar wind. Fast streams are known to be connected to the central regions of large coronal holes. Slow streams, however, appear to come from a wide range of sources, including streamers, pseudostreamers, coronal loops, active regions, and coronal hole boundaries. Complicating our understanding even more is the fact that processes such as turbulence, stream-stream interactions, and Coulomb collisions can make it difficult to unambiguously map a parcel measured at 1 AU back down to its coronal source. We also review recent progress -- in theoretical modeling, observational data analysis, and forecasting techniques that sit at the interface between data and theory -- that gives us hope that the above problems are indeed solvable.Comment: Accepted for publication in Space Science Reviews.     Biodiversity increases the resistance of ecosystem productivity to climate extremes

    It remains unclear whether biodiversity buffers ecosystems against climate extremes, which are becoming increasingly frequent worldwide1. Early results suggested that the ecosystem productivity of diverse grassland plant communities was more resistant, changing less during drought, and more resilient, recovering more quickly after drought, than that of depauperate communities2. However, subsequent experimental tests produced mixed results3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13. Here we use data from 46 experiments that manipulated grassland plant diversity to test whether biodiversity provides resistance during and resilience after climate events. We show that biodiversity increased ecosystem resistance for a broad range of climate events, including wet or dry, moderate or extreme, and brief or prolonged events. Across all studies and climate events, the productivity of low-diversity communities with one or two species changed by approximately 50% during climate events, whereas that of high-diversity communities with 16–32 species was more resistant, changing by only approximately 25%. By a year after each climate event, ecosystem productivity had often fully recovered, or overshot, normal levels of productivity in both high- and low-diversity communities, leading to no detectable dependence of ecosystem resilience on biodiversity. Our results suggest that biodiversity mainly stabilizes ecosystem productivity, and productivity-dependent ecosystem services, by increasing resistance to climate events. Anthropogenic environmental changes that drive biodiversity loss thus seem likely to decrease ecosystem stability14, and restoration of biodiversity to increase it, mainly by changing the resistance of ecosystem productivity to climate events

    Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp. Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Physics Letters B.     Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results

    Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

    This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio
