    Purinergic signaling during rat embryonic development.

    Adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) has been shown to be an important extracellular signaling molecule that mediates various physiological activities via the P2 (P2X and P2Y) receptors. However, information on the expression patterns of the P2 receptors during mammalian embryogenesis is limited. We therefore examined the expression patterns of different P2 receptor subtypes in rat embryos. In the hindbrain neural tube, the P2X3 receptor was transiently expressed at embryonic day E11 in the cranial motor neurons and the outgrowing axons. ATP significantly inhibited neurite outgrowth from neural tube explants. P2X3 receptors were also prominently expressed in sensory ganglia at this early stage and were coexpressed with P2X2 receptors in El6.5 embryos. Other P2X receptor subtypes were observed in different brain regions such as subventricular zones, the site of postnatal neurogenesis. In addition, the P2Y receptor expression was detected in the somites and subsequently in the developing skeletal muscle but was downregulated as development proceeded. While the P2Y1 receptor was no longer expressed in the adult skeletal muscle, the expression of P2Y2 receptor was present, although restricted in the satellite cells and the P2Y4 receptor showed reduced expression in adult skeletal muscle. Likewise, the expression of the P2Y receptors was initially expressed throughout the myocardium (El2) but was gradually restricted to the trabeculated myocardium (El4-18). Studies on Ca2+ influx showed that particular P2 receptor subtypes of P2X2, P2X4, P2Y1, P2Y2, P2Y4 and P2Y6 receptors responded to nucleotides in E14 cardiomyocytes. P2X7 receptor expression was detected in developing pancreatic islet cells and later coexpressed with glucagon in ?-cells. In addition, transient expression of the P2X7 receptor in insulin-expressing cells was observed in the embryonic, but not in adult, islet cells. Together, the results indicated that widespread and dynamic expression of P2 receptors was found in the three-germ layer-derived embryonic tissues, particularly in some transient embryonic structures during development, which suggested they may be important in embryonic organogenesis

    Impact of relative humidity and length-scale on the performance of a large PEM fuel cell.

    Polymer Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) is emerging as a promising future power source. Research has been focused on small PEMFCs, while its scalability and the performance of large cells remains elusive. This paper presents a numerical investigation into the practicality of expanding a small PEMFC into a large one, and a parametric study on the impact of relative humidity (RH) on the operational performance of the large cell. Numerical predictions are firstly validated against our in-house experimental measurements, where the predicted polarization (V-I) curve is in good agreement with the measurements. Numerical results confirm that water accumulation/flooding exhibits different characteristics at different regions - namely the activation, ohmic loss and concentration loss regions - and poses significant impacts on the current density production. Numerical results also show that the small cell is more susceptible to water flooding in comparison to the large cell under similar operational conditions. Suffering from excessive liquid water, the performance of the small cell is not as good as the large one in the concentration loss region, where a significant increase of current density production is observed. A parametric study on the effect of the humidified reactants on cell performance has been also performed. The increase of RH generally shows an increasing effect on the performance of the cell, while the limitation is found at high RHs (60% and 80%) and low voltage (0.3V), due to the hydration of the membrane and the blockage of reactant delivery

    Refined Interfaces for Compositional Verification

    The compositional verification approach of Graf & Steffen aims at avoiding state space explosion for individual processes of a concurrent system. It relies on interfaces that express the behavioural constraints imposed on each process by synchronization with the other processes, thus preventing the exploration of states and transitions that would not be reachable in the global state space. Krimm & Mounier, and Cheung & Kramer proposed two techniques to generate such interfaces automatically. In this report, we propose a refined interface generation technique that derives the interface of a process automatically from the examination of (a subset of) concurrent processes. This technique is applicable to formalisms where concurrent processes are composed either using synchronization vectors or process algebra parallel composition operators (including those of CCS, CSP, muCRL, LOTOS, and E-LOTOS). We implemented this approach in the EXP.OPEN 2.0 tool of the CADP toolbox. Several experiments indicate state space reductions by more than two orders of magnitude for the largest processes

    Surveillance of emerging drugs of abuse in Hong Kong: Validation of an analytical tool

Objective: To validate a locally developed chromatography-based method to monitor emerging drugs of abuse whilst performing regular drug testing in abusers. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Eleven regional hospitals, seven social service units, and a tertiary level clinical toxicology laboratory in Hong Kong. Participants: A total of 972 drug abusers and high-risk individuals were recruited from acute, rehabilitation, and high-risk settings between 1 November 2011 and 31 July 2013. A subset of the participants was of South Asian ethnicity. In total, 2000 urine or hair specimens were collected. Main outcome measures: Proof of concept that surveillance of emerging drugs of abuse can be performed whilst conducting routine drug of abuse testing in patients. Results: The method was successfully applied to 2000 samples with three emerging drugs of abuse detected in five samples: PMMA (paramethoxymethamphetamine), TFMPP [1-(3-trifluoromethylphenyl)piperazine], and methcathinone. The method also detected conventional drugs of abuse, with codeine, methadone, heroin, methamphetamine, and ketamine being the most frequently detected drugs. Other findings included the observation that South Asians had significantly higher rates of using opiates such as heroin, methadone, and codeine; and that ketamine and cocaine had significantly higher detection rates in acute subjects compared with the rehabilitation population. Conclusions: This locally developed analytical method is a valid tool for simultaneous surveillance of emerging drugs of abuse and routine drug monitoring of patients at minimal additional cost and effort. Continued, proactive surveillance and early identification of emerging drugs will facilitate prompt clinical, social, and legislative management.Link_to_subscribed_fulltex

    Heavy quarkonium: progress, puzzles, and opportunities

    A golden age for heavy quarkonium physics dawned a decade ago, initiated by the confluence of exciting advances in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and an explosion of related experimental activity. The early years of this period were chronicled in the Quarkonium Working Group (QWG) CERN Yellow Report (YR) in 2004, which presented a comprehensive review of the status of the field at that time and provided specific recommendations for further progress. However, the broad spectrum of subsequent breakthroughs, surprises, and continuing puzzles could only be partially anticipated. Since the release of the YR, the BESII program concluded only to give birth to BESIII; the BB-factories and CLEO-c flourished; quarkonium production and polarization measurements at HERA and the Tevatron matured; and heavy-ion collisions at RHIC have opened a window on the deconfinement regime. All these experiments leave legacies of quality, precision, and unsolved mysteries for quarkonium physics, and therefore beg for continuing investigations. The plethora of newly-found quarkonium-like states unleashed a flood of theoretical investigations into new forms of matter such as quark-gluon hybrids, mesonic molecules, and tetraquarks. Measurements of the spectroscopy, decays, production, and in-medium behavior of c\bar{c}, b\bar{b}, and b\bar{c} bound states have been shown to validate some theoretical approaches to QCD and highlight lack of quantitative success for others. The intriguing details of quarkonium suppression in heavy-ion collisions that have emerged from RHIC have elevated the importance of separating hot- and cold-nuclear-matter effects in quark-gluon plasma studies.     Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results

    Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp. Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Physics Letters B.     Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

    This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio
