Large Bi-2212 single crystal growth by the floating-zone technique
Effects of the growth velocity on the crystal growth behavior of
Bi_2Sr_2Ca_1Cu_2O_x (Bi-2212) have been studied by floating zone technique. The
results show that a necessary condition for obtaining large single crystals
along the c-axis is that the solid-liquid interface of a growing rod maintains
a stable planar growth front. The planar liquid-solid growth interface tends to
break down into a cellular interface, while the growth velocity is higher than
0.25 mm/h. Single crystals of up to 50x7.2x7 mm3 along the a-, b- and caxes
have been cut in a 7.2 mm diameter rod with optimum growth conditions. Tconset
is 91 K measured by magnetic properties measurement system (MPMS) for as-grown
crystals. Optical polarization microscope and neutron diffraction show that the
quality of the single crystals is good.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Energy Spectrum of Bloch Electrons Under Checkerboard Field Modulations
Two-dimensional Bloch electrons in a uniform magnetic field exhibit complex
energy spectrum. When static electric and magnetic modulations with a
checkerboard pattern are superimposed on the uniform magnetic field, more
structures and symmetries of the spectra are found, due to the additional
adjustable parameters from the modulations. We give a comprehensive report on
these new symmetries. We have also found an electric-modulation induced energy
gap, whose magnitude is independent of the strength of either the uniform or
the modulated magnetic field. This study is applicable to experimentally
accessible systems and is related to the investigations on frustrated
antiferromagnetism.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures (reduced in sizes), submitted to Phys. Rev.
Dynamics near the Surface Reconstruction of W(100)
Using Brownian molecular dynamics simulation, we study the surface dynamics
near the reconstruction transition of W(100) via a model Hamiltonian. Results
for the softening and broadening of the surface phonon spectrum near the
transition are compared with previous calculations and with He atom scattering
data. From the critical behavior of the central peak in the dynamical structure
factor, we also estimate the exponent of the power law anomaly for adatom
diffusion near the transition temperature.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Is traditional Chinese medicine recommended in Western medicine clinical practice guidelines in China? A systematic analysis
BackgroundEvidence-based medicine promotes and relies on the use of evidence in developing clinical practice guidelines (CPGs). The Chinese healthcare system includes both traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Western medicine, which are expected to be equally reflected in Chinese CPGs.ObjectiveTo evaluate the inclusion of TCM-related information in Western medicine CPGs developed in China and the adoption of high level evidence.MethodsAll CPGs were identified from the China Guideline Clearinghouse (CGC), which is the main Chinese organisation maintaining the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health of China, the Chinese Medical Association and the Chinese Medical Doctorsâ Association.TCM-related contents were extracted from all the CPGs identified. Extracted information comprised the institution issuing the guideline, date of issue, disease, recommendations relating to TCM, evidence level of the recommended content and references supporting the recommendations.ResultsA total of 604 CPGs were identified, only a small number of which (74/604; 12%) recommended TCM therapy and only five guidelines (7%) had applied evidence grading. The 74 CPGs involved 13 disease systems according to the International Classification of Diseases 10th edition. TCM was mainly recommended in the treatment part of the guidelines (73/74, 99%), and more than half of the recommendations (43/74, 58%) were related to Chinese herbal medicine (single herbs or herbal treatment based on syndrome differentiation).ConclusionsFew Chinese Western medicine CPGs recommend TCM therapies and very few provide evidence grading for the TCM recommendation. We suggest that future guideline development should be based on systematic searches for evidence to support CPG recommendations and involve a multidisciplinary approach including TCM expertise

Search for Single Top Production at LEP
Single top production in e+e- annihilations is searched for in data collected
by the L3 detector at centre-of-mass energies from 189 to 209 GeV,
corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 634 pb-1. Investigating
hadronic and semileptonic top decays, no evidence of single top production at
LEP is obtained and upper limits on the single top cross section as a function
of the centre-of-mass energy are derived. Limits on possible anomalous
couplings, as well as on the scale of contact interactions responsible for
single top production are determined
Search for Doubly-Charged Higgs Bosons at LEP
Doubly-charged Higgs bosons are searched for in e^+e^- collision data
collected with the L3 detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies up to 209 GeV.
Final states with four leptons are analysed to tag the pair-production of
doubly charged Higgs bosons. No significant excess is found and lower limits at
95% confidence level on the doubly-charged Higgs boson mass are derived. They
vary from 95.5 GeV to 100.2 GeV, depending on the decay mode. Doubly-charged
Higgs bosons which couple to electrons would modify the cross section and
forward-backward asymmetry of the e^+e^- -> e^+e^- process. The measurements of
these quantities do not deviate from the Standard Model expectations and
doubly-charged Higgs bosons with masses up to the order of a TeV are excluded
Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV
A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The
analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC
from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an
integrated luminosity of 4.8 inverse femtobarns. Limits are set on the cross
section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected
exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the
standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The
analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model
Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The
largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is
observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance
of 3.1 sigma. The global significance of observing an excess with a local
significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is
estimated to be 1.8 sigma. More data are required to ascertain the origin of
this excess.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters
Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment
This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and
W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with
the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and
the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto
the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions
f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV
and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw
> 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour,
are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017
+/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second
include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables,
