    Estabilidad térmica de hidroxiapatitas de calcio dopadas con zinc

    Con el objetivo de intentar mejorar las propiedades osteointegradoras de las hidroxiapatitas de calcio se han sintetizado y caracterizado diversas apatitas con distintos grados de sustitución de Ca(II) por otros iones metálicos como Cd(II), Zn(II), Sr(II), Pb(II) y Mg(II). La sustitución de Ca(II) por Zn(II) resulta particularmente interesante dado que ambos cationes resultan ser esenciales y muy abundantes en los sistemas biológicos. Para la obtención del biomaterial en forma de granulados o en bloques, se utiliza un proceso de sinterización de la hidroxiapatita de calcio a partir del tratamiento térmico de la misma. En trabajos previos, se estudiaron, a partir de datos de difracción de rayos X de polvos (DRX) empleando el análisis de Rietveld, las estructuras de apatitas puras y sustituidas con Zn(II), sintetizadas por el método de Hayek y Newesely. Los sólidos analizados mostraron una transformación de fase de monoclínica a hexagonal al agregar una pequeña proporción de Zn(II) al proceso de síntesis, cambio atribuible a la incorporación, simultánea con el Zn(II), de un elevado porcentaje de agua a la estructura, lo cual trajo como resultado una baja estabilidad térmica. Con el objetivo de sintetizar hidroxiapatitas de calcio (CaHap) dopadas con Zn(II) que tuvieran una mayor estabilidad térmica en este trabajo se utilizó un método similar al desarrollado por Gibson y Bonfield para preparar hidroxiapatita de Ca pura (CaHap) e hidroxiapatitas con 3, 5, y 10% en masa de Zn.     A clinical and molecular portrait of non-metastatic anal squamous cell carcinoma

    Anal squamous cell carcinoma (ASCC) is a rare gastrointestinal malignancy associated with high-risk Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Despite improved outcomes in non-metastatic ASCC, definitive chemoradiotherapy constitutes the standard treatment for localized disease. Evidences for predictive and prognostic biomarkers are limited. Here, we performed a viral, immune, and mutational characterization of 79 non-metastatic ASCC patients with complete definitive chemoradiotherapy. HPV-16 was detected in 91% of positive cases in single infections (78%) or in coinfections with multiple genotypes (22%). Fifty-four percent of non-metastatic ASCC cases displayed mutations affecting cancer driver genes such as PIK3CA (21% of cases), TP53 (15%), FBXW7 (9%), and APC (6%). PD-L1 expression was detected in 57% of non-metastatic ASCC. Increased PD-L1 positive cases (67%) were detected in patients with complete response compared with non-complete response to treatment (37%) (p = 0.021). Furthermore, patients with PD-L1 positive tumors were significantly associated with better disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) compared with patients with PD-L1 negative tumors (p = 0.006 and p = 0.002, respectively). PD-L1 expression strongly impacts CR rate and survival of non-metastatic ASCC patients after standard definitive chemoradiotherapy.     The ocean sampling day consortium

    Ocean Sampling Day was initiated by the EU-funded Micro B3 (Marine Microbial Biodiversity, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology) project to obtain a snapshot of the marine microbial biodiversity and function of the world’s oceans. It is a simultaneous global mega-sequencing campaign aiming to generate the largest standardized microbial data set in a single day. This will be achievable only through the coordinated efforts of an Ocean Sampling Day Consortium, supportive partnerships and networks between sites. This commentary outlines the establishment, function and aims of the Consortium and describes our vision for a sustainable study of marine microbial communities and their embedded functional traits

    Measurement invariance of the moral vitalism scale across 28 cultural groups

    Moral vitalism refers to a tendency to view good and evil as actual forces that can influence people and events. The Moral Vitalism Scale had been designed to assess moral vitalism in a brief survey form. Previous studies established the reliability and validity of the scale in US-American and Australian samples. In this study, the cross-cultural comparability of the scale was tested across 28 different cultural groups worldwide through measurement invariance tests. A series of exact invariance tests marginally supported partial metric invariance, however, an approximate invariance approach provided evidence of partial scalar invariance for a 5-item measure. The established level of measurement invariance allows for comparisons of latent means across cultures. We conclude that the brief measure of moral vitalism is invariant across 28 cultures and can be used to estimate levels of moral vitalism with the same precision across very different cultural settings.Peer reviewe

    SARS-CoV-2 lineage B.1.1.7 is associated with greater disease severity among hospitalised women but not men: multicentre cohort study.

    BACKGROUND: SARS-CoV-2 lineage B.1.1.7 has been associated with an increased rate of transmission and disease severity among subjects testing positive in the community. Its impact on hospitalised patients is less well documented. METHODS: We collected viral sequences and clinical data of patients admitted with SARS-CoV-2 and hospital-onset COVID-19 infections (HOCIs), sampled 16 November 2020 to 10 January 2021, from eight hospitals participating in the COG-UK-HOCI study. Associations between the variant and the outcomes of all-cause mortality and intensive therapy unit (ITU) admission were evaluated using mixed effects Cox models adjusted by age, sex, comorbidities, care home residence, pregnancy and ethnicity. FINDINGS: Sequences were obtained from 2341 inpatients (HOCI cases=786) and analysis of clinical outcomes was carried out in 2147 inpatients with all data available. The HR for mortality of B.1.1.7 compared with other lineages was 1.01 (95% CI 0.79 to 1.28, p=0.94) and for ITU admission was 1.01 (95% CI 0.75 to 1.37, p=0.96). Analysis of sex-specific effects of B.1.1.7 identified increased risk of mortality (HR 1.30, 95% CI 0.95 to 1.78, p=0.096) and ITU admission (HR 1.82, 95% CI 1.15 to 2.90, p=0.011) in females infected with the variant but not males (mortality HR 0.82, 95% CI 0.61 to 1.10, p=0.177; ITU HR 0.74, 95% CI 0.52 to 1.04, p=0.086). INTERPRETATION: In common with smaller studies of patients hospitalised with SARS-CoV-2, we did not find an overall increase in mortality or ITU admission associated with B.1.1.7 compared with other lineages. However, women with B.1.1.7 may be at an increased risk of admission to intensive care and at modestly increased risk of mortality.This report was produced by members of the COG-UK-HOCI Variant substudy consortium.     Explaining illness with evil: pathogen prevalence fosters moral vitalism

    Pathogens represent a significant threat to human health leading to the emergence of strategies designed to help manage their negative impact. We examined how spiritual beliefs developed to explain and predict the devastating effects of pathogens and spread of infectious disease. Analysis of existing data in studies 1 and 2 suggests that moral vitalism (beliefs about spiritual forces of evil) is higher in geographical regions characterized by historical higher levels of pathogens. Furthermore, drawing on a sample of 3140 participants from 28 countries in study 3, we found that historical higher levels of pathogens were associated with stronger endorsement of moral vitalis- tic beliefs. Furthermore, endorsement of moral vitalistic beliefs statistically mediated the previously reported relationship between pathogen prevalence and conser- vative ideologies, suggesting these beliefs reinforce behavioural strategies which function to prevent infection. We conclude that moral vitalism may be adaptive: by emphasizing concerns over contagion, it provided an explanatory model that enabled human groups to reduce rates of contagious disease
