A new index to measure positive dependence in trivariate distributions
Fundação de Amparo Ă Pesquisa do Estado de SĂŁo Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientĂfico e TecnolĂłgico (CNPq)We introduce a new index to detect dependence in trivariate distributions. The index is based on the maximization of the coefficients of directional dependence over the set of directions. We show how to calculate the index using the three pairwise Spearman's rho coefficients and the three common 3-dimensional versions of Spearman's rho. We obtain the asymptotic distributions of the empirical processes related to the estimators of the coefficients of directional dependence and also we derive the asymptotic distribution of our index. We display examples where the index identifies dependence undetected by the aforementioned 3-dimensional versions of Spearman's rho. The value of the new index and the direction in which the maximal dependence occurs are easily computed and we illustrate with a simulation study and a real data set. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. Chern-Simons production during preheating in hybrid inflation models
We study the onset of symmetry breaking after hybrid inflation in a model
having the field content of the SU(2) gauge-scalar sector of the standard
model, coupled to a singlet inflaton. This process is studied in
(3+1)-dimensions in a fully non-perturbative way with the help of lattice
techniques within the classical approximation. We focus on the role played by
gauge fields and, in particular, on the generation of Chern-Simons number. Our
results are shown to be insensitive to the various cut-offs introduced in our
numerical approach. The spectra preserves a large hierarchy between long and
short-wavelength modes during the whole period of symmetry breaking and
Chern-Simons generation, confirming that the dynamics is driven by the low
momentum sector of the theory. We establish that the Chern-Simons production
mechanism is associated with local sphaleron-like structures. The corresponding
sphaleron rates are of order 10^{-5} m^4, which, within certain scenarios of
electroweak baryogenesis and a (not unnaturally large) additional source of CP
violation, could explain the present baryon asymmetry of the universe.Comment: 28 pages, 15 figures, ReVTeX. With minor corrections, version to

One-dimension cubic-quintic Gross-Pitaevskii equation in Bose-Einstein condensates in a trap potential
By means of new general variational method we report a direct solution for
the quintic self-focusing nonlinearity and cubic-quintic 1D Gross Pitaeskii
equation (GPE) in a harmonic confined potential. We explore the influence of
the 3D transversal motion generating a quintic nonlinear term on the ideal 1D
pure cigar-like shape model for the attractive and repulsive atom-atom
interaction in Bose Einstein condensates (BEC). Also, we offer a closed
analytical expression for the evaluation of the error produced when solely the
cubic nonlinear GPE is considered for the description of 1D BEC.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Measurement of the photon-jet production differential cross section in collisions at \sqrt{s}=1.96~\TeV
We present measurements of the differential cross section dsigma/dpT_gamma
for the inclusive production of a photon in association with a b-quark jet for
photons with rapidities |y_gamma|< 1.0 and 30<pT_gamma <300 GeV, as well as for
photons with 1.5<|y_gamma|< 2.5 and 30< pT_gamma <200 GeV, where pT_gamma is
the photon transverse momentum. The b-quark jets are required to have pT>15 GeV
and rapidity |y_jet| < 1.5. The results are based on data corresponding to an
integrated luminosity of 8.7 fb^-1, recorded with the D0 detector at the
Fermilab Tevatron Collider at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV. The measured cross
sections are compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations
using different sets of parton distribution functions as well as to predictions
based on the kT-factorization QCD approach, and those from the Sherpa and
Pythia Monte Carlo event generators.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Phys. Lett.
Limits on anomalous trilinear gauge boson couplings from WW, WZ and Wgamma production in pp-bar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV
We present final searches of the anomalous gammaWW and ZWW trilinear gauge
boson couplings from WW and WZ production using lepton plus dijet final states
and a combination with results from Wgamma, WW, and WZ production with leptonic
final states. The analyzed data correspond to up to 8.6/fb of integrated
luminosity collected by the D0 detector in pp-bar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96
TeV. We set the most stringent limits at a hadron collider to date assuming two
different relations between the anomalous coupling parameters
Delta\kappa_\gamma, lambda, and Delta g_1^Z for a cutoff energy scale Lambda=2
TeV. The combined 68% C.L. limits are -0.057<Delta\kappa_\gamma<0.154,
-0.015<lambda<0.028, and -0.008<Delta g_1^Z<0.054 for the LEP parameterization,
and -0.007<Delta\kappa<0.081 and -0.017<lambda<0.028 for the equal couplings
parameterization. We also present the most stringent limits of the W boson
magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PL
Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in âs = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fbâ1 of protonâproton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC
Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC
provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of
lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with
a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the
transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the
anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the
nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of
the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp.
Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in
the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies
smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating
nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and
transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of
inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous
measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables,

A Coin Vibrational Motor Swimming at Low Reynolds Number
Low-cost coin vibrational motors, used in haptic feedback, exhibit rotational internal motion inside a rigid case. Because the motor case motion exhibits rotational symmetry, when placed into a fluid such as glycerin, the motor does not swim even though its oscillatory motions induce steady streaming in the fluid. However, a piece of rubber foam stuck to the curved case and giving the motor neutral buoyancy also breaks the rotational symmetry allowing it to swim. We measured a 1 cm diameter coin vibrational motor swimming in glycerin at a speed of a body length in 3 seconds or at 3 mm/s. The swim speed puts the vibrational motor in a low Reynolds number regime similar to bacterial motility, but because of the oscillations of the motor it is not analogous to biological organisms. Rather the swimming vibrational motor may inspire small inexpensive robotic swimmers that are robust as they contain no external moving parts. A time dependent Stokes equation planar sheet model suggests that the swim speed depends on a steady streaming velocity V stream ~ Re 1/2s U 0 where U 0 is the velocity of surface oscillations, and streaming Reynolds number Re s = U 20/(ÏÎœ) for motor angular frequency Ï and fluid kinematic viscosity Îœ
