Response of copepods to elevated pCO2 and environmental copper as co-stressors--a multigenerational study.
We examined the impacts of ocean acidification and copper as co-stressors on the reproduction and population level responses of the benthic copepod Tisbe battagliai across two generations. Naupliar production, growth, and cuticle elemental composition were determined for four pH values: 8.06 (control); 7.95; 7.82; 7.67, with copper addition to concentrations equivalent to those in benthic pore waters. An additive synergistic effect was observed; the decline in naupliar production was greater with added copper at decreasing pH than for decreasing pH alone. Naupliar production modelled for the two generations revealed a negative synergistic impact between ocean acidification and environmentally relevant copper concentrations. Conversely, copper addition enhanced copepod growth, with larger copepods produced at each pH compared to the impact of pH alone. Copepod digests revealed significantly reduced cuticle concentrations of sulphur, phosphorus and calcium under decreasing pH; further, copper uptake increased to toxic levels that lead to reduced naupliar production. These data suggest that ocean acidification will enhance copper bioavailability, resulting in larger, but less fecund individuals that may have an overall detrimental outcome for copepod populations
Visualisation of the copepod female reproductive system using confocal laser scanning microscopy and two-photon microscopy
We examined mating behaviour in the harpacticoid copepod Tube battagliai Volkmann-Rocco, 1972, in particular the process of delivering spermatophore seminal contents to the female urosome. Labelling using 4′6′ diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) coupled with two-photon confocal laser scanning microscopy successfully visualised the spermatophore and female internal reproductive system. Sections of the female urosome were imaged to examine seminal fluid stores. The female tissues were found to auto-fluoresce as red emission under green excitation, requiring no additional tissue labelling. DAPI-labelled seminal fluid stores were identified within the female reproductive system. The details observed agreed with previous descriptions of copepod reproductive anatomy and of spermatophores. Specimens cultured under pH 8.10 and a simulated ocean acidification scenario (pH 7.67) were compared for changes in reproductive anatomy and spermatophore size and site attachment. No differences were observed in spermatophore attachment or the female reproductive system but spermatophore size was reduced significantly at pH 7.67 compared with pH 8.10. This size reduction was, however, in proportion to an overall reduction in female body size at reduced pH. Confocal microscopy is shown here to be a valuable tool to investigate detailed reproductive processes in copepods
Dirac-like Monopoles in Three Dimensions and Their Possible Influences on the Dynamics of Particles
Dirac-like monopoles are studied in three-dimensional Abelian Maxwell and
Maxwell-Chern-Simons models. Their scalar nature is highlighted and discussed
through a dimensional reduction of four-dimensional electrodynamics with
electric and magnetic sources. Some general properties and similarities of them
when are considered in Minkowski or Euclidian space are mentioned. However, by
virtue of the structure of the space-time in which they are considered a number
of differences among them take place. Furthermore, we pay attention to some
consequences of these objects when acting upon usual particles. Among other
subjects, special attention is given to the study of a Lorentz-violating
non-minimal coupling between neutral fermions and the field generated by a
monopole alone. In addition, an analogue of the Aharonov-Casher effect is

Partial kindling induces neurogenesis, activates astrocytes and alters synaptic morphology in the dentate gyrus of freely moving adult rats
A partial kindling procedure was used to investigate the correlation between focal seizure development and changes in dendritic spine morphology, ongoing neurogenesis and reactive astrogliosis in the adult rat dentate gyrus (DG).
The processes of neurogenesis and astrogliosis were investigated using markers for doublecortin (DCX), BrdU and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). Our data demonstrate that mild focal seizures induce a complex series of cellular events in the DG one day after cessation of partial rapid kindling stimulation consisting (in comparison to control animals that were electrode implanted but unkindled), firstly, of an increase in the number of postmitotic BrdU labelled cells, and secondly, an increase in the number of DCX labelled cells, mainly in subgranular zone. Ultrastructural changes were examined using qualitative electron microscope analysis and 3-D reconstructions of both dendritic spines and postsynaptic densities. Typical features of kindling in comparison to control tissue included translocation of mitochondria to the base of the dendritic spine stalks; a migration of multivesicular bodies into mushroom dendritic spines, and most notably formation of 'giant' spinules originating from the head of the spines of DG neurons. These morphological alterations arise at seizure stages 2-3 (focal seizures) in the absence of signs of the severe generalized seizures that are generally recognized as potentially harmful for neuronal cells.
We suggest that an increase in ongoing neurogenesis, reactive astrogliosis and dendritic spine reorganization in the DG are the crucial steps in the chain of events leading to the progressive development of seizure susceptibility in hippocampal circuits
Color superconductivity, Z_N flux tubes and monopole confinement in deformed N=2* super Yang-Mills theories
We study the Z_N flux tubes and monopole confinement in deformed N=2* super
Yang-Mills theories. In order to do that we consider an N=4 super Yang-Mills
theory with an arbitrary gauge group G and add some N=2, N=1 and N=0
deformation terms. We analyze some possible vacuum solutions and phases of the
theory, depending on the deformation terms which are added. In the Coulomb
phase for the N=2* theory, G is broken to U(1)^r and the theory has monopole
solutions. Then, by adding some deformation terms, the theory passes to the
Higgs or color superconducting phase, in which G is broken to its center C_G.
In this phase we construct the Z_N flux tubes ansatz and obtain the BPS string
tension. We show that the monopole magnetic fluxes are linear integer
combinations of the string fluxes and therefore the monopoles can become
confined. Then, we obtain a bound for the threshold length of the
string-breaking. We also show the possible formation of a confining system with
3 different monopoles for the SU(3) gauge group. Finally we show that the BPS
string tensions of the theory satisfy the Casimir scaling law.Comment: 18 pages, 2 figures, typo corrections. Version to appear in Phys.

Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC
Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC
provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of
lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with
a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the
transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the
anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the
nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of
the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp.
Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in
the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies
smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating
nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and
transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of
inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous

Parâmetros populacionais da raça ovina Santa Inês no Brasil
O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a estrutura populacional de ovinos da raça Santa Inês criados no Brasil. Foram utilizados dados de pedigree de 13.216 animais, pertencentes a 53 rebanhos de oito estados brasileiros, nascidos no período de 1976 a 2010. O programa Endog foi utilizado para análise do pedigree e estimação dos parâmetros populacionais. Do total de animais estudados, 80,86% apresentaram pedigree na primeira ascendência, 73,78% na segunda e 67,75% na terceira. O número máximo de gerações conhecidas foi de 19, e a média de gerações equivalentes foi de 4,67. A média do intervalo de gerações foi de 3,22±1,77 anos. O tamanho efetivo da população apresentou média de 172,5 animais. O número de animais fundadores foi 829, mas o número efetivo de fundadores foi apenas 50. Os 17 principais ancestrais explicaram 50% da variabilidade genética total. O coeficiente médio de relação foi de 3,87% e o de endogamia, de 6,92%. Apesar do satisfatório coeficiente médio de endogamia nas últimas gerações, este coeficiente requer monitoramento por sua proximidade do limite recomendável. O fluxo de genes entre os rebanhos é o principal fator para o aumento do tamanho efetivo e a manutenção da variabilidade genética da raça Santa Inês
