    Diagnostic Value of Thyrotropin Releasing Hormone Test in 129 Patients with Suspected Tumoral Hyperprolactinemia

    In 129 hyperprolactinemic (PRL 100ng/mL) and 100 normoprolactinemic patients (PRL 0–25 ng/mL), max. PRL (the difference between maximal prolactin (PRL) after thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) injection and basal value) was compared with basal PRL and computed tomography (CT) of the sellar region. In 122 hyperprolactinemic patients max. PRL was <100%, while tumor was found in 106 of them. In the remainder seven hyperprolactinemic patients max. PRL was 100% and CT showed no tumor. A significant difference in max. PRL between hyperprolactinemic patients without and those with verified adenoma was found and showed a significant negative correlation with basal PRL. Between 122 hyperprolactinemic patients with max. PRL <100%, mean basal PRL and duration of clinical symptoms were significantly lower in 16 patients with normal CT compared to 106 patients with tumor. All normoprolactinemic patients showed max. PRL 100% and no tumor on CT. PRL stimulation disturbance precedes tumor visualization and represents a decisive diagnostic parameter in hyperprolactinemic patients with no tumor signs

    Diagnosis and treatment of carotid body paraganglioma: 21 years of experience at a clinical center of Serbia

    BACKGROUND: The carotid body paraganglioma (chemodectoma) is a relatively rare neoplasm of obscure origin. These are usually benign and commonly present as asymptomatic cervical mass. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Records of 12 patients (9 female and 3 male) with carotid body tumors treated between 1982 and 2003, treated at our center were retrospectively reviewed. Data on classification, clinical presentation, and surgical treatment were extracted from the case records. Surgical complications and treatment outcome were noted and survival was calculated by actuarial method. The literature on carotid body paraganglioma was reviewed. RESULTS: The average age of the patients was 52 years (range 30–78 years). Eight of these cases presented as a large asymptomatic non-tender neck mass, and two each presented with dysphagia, and hoarseness of voice. As per Shamblin classification seven of tumors were type II and 5 were types III. In 7 cases subadventitial tumor excision was performed, while in 5 associated resection of both external and internal carotid arteries was carried out. The artery was repaired by end-to-end anastomosis in one case, with Dacron graft in one case, and with saphenous vein graft in 3 cases. There was no operative mortality. After a mean follow-up of 6.2 years (range 6 months to 20 years), there were no signs of tumor recurrence in any of the cases. CONCLUSIONS: Surgical excision is the treatment of choice for carotid body paragangliomas although radiation therapy is an option for patients who are not ideal candidates for surgery. For the tumors that are in intimate contact with carotid arteries, the treatment by vascular surgeon is recommended

    Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy for typing of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium: performance analysis and outbreak investigation.

    Vancomycin-resistant Enterococci, mainly Enterococcus faecium (VREfm), are causing nosocomial infections and outbreaks. Bacterial typing methods are used to assist in outbreak investigations. Most of them, especially genotypic methods like multi-locus sequence typing (MLST), whole genome sequencing (WGS), or pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, are quite expensive and time-consuming. Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy assesses the biochemical composition of bacteria, such as carboxyl groups in polysaccharides. It is an affordable technique and has a faster turnaround time. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate FT-IR spectroscopy for VREfm outbreak investigations. Basic performance requirements like reproducibility and the effects of incubation time were assessed in distinct sample sets. After determining a FT-IR spectroscopy cut-off range, the clustering agreement between FT-IR and WGS within a retrospective (n: 92 isolates) and a prospective outbreak (n: 15 isolates) was investigated. For WGS an average nucleotide identity (ANI) cut-off score of 0.999 was used. Basic performance analysis showed reproducible results. Moreover, FT-IR spectroscopy readouts showed a high agreement with WGS-ANI analysis in clinical outbreak investigations (V-measure 0.772 for the retrospective and 1.000 for the prospective outbreak). FT-IR spectroscopy had a higher discriminatory power than MLST in the outbreak investigations. After determining cut-off values to achieve optimal resolution, FT-IR spectroscopy is a promising technique to assist in outbreak investigation as an affordable, easy-to-use tool with a turnaround time of less than one day.     Measurement of the cross-section and charge asymmetry of WW bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at s=8\sqrt{s}=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    This paper presents measurements of the W+→Ό+ÎœW^+ \rightarrow \mu^+\nu and W−→Ό−ΜW^- \rightarrow \mu^-\nu cross-sections and the associated charge asymmetry as a function of the absolute pseudorapidity of the decay muon. The data were collected in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 20.2~\mbox{fb^{-1}}. The precision of the cross-section measurements varies between 0.8% to 1.5% as a function of the pseudorapidity, excluding the 1.9% uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The charge asymmetry is measured with an uncertainty between 0.002 and 0.003. The results are compared with predictions based on next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations with various parton distribution functions and have the sensitivity to discriminate between them.Comment: 38 pages in total, author list starting page 22, 5 figures, 4 tables, submitted to EPJC.     Search for chargino-neutralino production with mass splittings near the electroweak scale in three-lepton final states in √s=13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for supersymmetry through the pair production of electroweakinos with mass splittings near the electroweak scale and decaying via on-shell W and Z bosons is presented for a three-lepton final state. The analyzed proton-proton collision data taken at a center-of-mass energy of √s=13  TeV were collected between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139  fb−1. A search, emulating the recursive jigsaw reconstruction technique with easily reproducible laboratory-frame variables, is performed. The two excesses observed in the 2015–2016 data recursive jigsaw analysis in the low-mass three-lepton phase space are reproduced. Results with the full data set are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations. They are interpreted to set exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level on simplified models of chargino-neutralino pair production for masses up to 345 GeV

    Search for direct stau production in events with two hadronic tau-leptons in root s=13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of the supersymmetric partners ofτ-leptons (staus) in final stateswith two hadronically decayingτ-leptons is presented. The analysis uses a dataset of pp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of139fb−1, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LargeHadron Collider at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. No significant deviation from the expected StandardModel background is observed. Limits are derived in scenarios of direct production of stau pairs with eachstau decaying into the stable lightest neutralino and oneτ-lepton in simplified models where the two staumass eigenstates are degenerate. Stau masses from 120 GeV to 390 GeV are excluded at 95% confidencelevel for a massless lightest neutralino

    Search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at √ s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Results of a search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum are reported. The search uses 20.3 fb−1 of √ s = 8 TeV data collected in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events are required to have at least one jet with pT > 120 GeV and no leptons. Nine signal regions are considered with increasing missing transverse momentum requirements between Emiss T > 150 GeV and Emiss T > 700 GeV. Good agreement is observed between the number of events in data and Standard Model expectations. The results are translated into exclusion limits on models with either large extra spatial dimensions, pair production of weakly interacting dark matter candidates, or production of very light gravitinos in a gauge-mediated supersymmetric model.     The effect of renal denervation on T cells in patients with resistant hypertension

    (1) BACKGROUND: Sympathetic overactivity is a major contributor to resistant hypertension (RH). According to animal studies, sympathetic overactivity increases immune responses, thereby aggravating hypertension and cardiovascular outcomes. Renal denervation (RDN) reduces sympathetic nerve activity in RH. Here, we investigate the effect of RDN on T-cell signatures in RH. (2) METHODS: Systemic inflammation and T-cell subsets were analyzed in 17 healthy individuals and 30 patients with RH at baseline and 6 months after RDN. (3) RESULTS: The patients with RH demonstrated higher levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and higher frequencies of CD4+ effector memory (TEM), CD4+ effector memory residential (TEMRA) and CD8+ central memory (TCM) cells than the controls. After RDN, systolic automated office blood pressure (BP) decreased by -17.6 ± 18.9 mmHg. Greater BP reductions were associated with higher CD4+ TEM (r -0.421, p = 0.02) and CD8+ TCM (r -0.424, p = 0.02) frequencies at baseline. The RDN responders, that is, the patients with ≄10mmHg systolic BP reduction, showed reduced pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, whereas the non-responders had unchanged inflammatory activity and higher CD8+ TEMRA frequencies with increased cellular cytokine production. (4) CONCLUSIONS: The pro-inflammatory state of patients with RH is characterized by altered T-cell signatures, especially in non-responders. A detailed analysis of T cells might be useful in selecting patients for RDN
