    Urinary Bisphenol A Concentrations and Implantation Failure among Women Undergoing in Vitro Fertilization

    Background: Bisphenol A (BPA) is a synthetic chemical widely used in the production of polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins found in numerous consumer products. In experimental animals, BPA increases embryo implantation failure and reduces litter size. Objective: We evaluated the association of urinary BPA concentrations with implantation failure among women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF). Methods: We used online solid phase extraction–high performance liquid chromatography–isotope dilution tandem mass spectrometry to measure urinary BPA concentrations in 137 women in a prospective cohort study among women undergoing IVF at the Massachusetts General Hospital Fertility Center in Boston, Massachusetts. We used logistic regression to evaluate the association of cycle-specific urinary BPA concentrations with implantation failure, accounting for correlation among multiple IVF cycles in the same woman using generalized estimating equations. Implantation failure was defined as a negative serum β-human chorionic gonadotropin test (β-hCG < 6 IU/L) 17 days after egg retrieval. Results: Among 137 women undergoing 180 IVF cycles, urinary BPA concentrations had a geometric mean (SD) of 1.53 (2.22) µg/L. Overall, 42% (n = 75) of the IVF cycles resulted in implantation failure. In adjusted models, there was an increased odds of implantation failure with higher quartiles of urinary BPA concentrations {odds ratio (OR) 1.02 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.35, 2.95}, 1.60 (95% CI: 0.70, 3.78), and 2.11 (95% CI: 0.84, 5.31) for quartiles 2, 3, and 4, respectively, compared with the lowest quartile (p-trend = 0.06). Conclusion: There was a positive linear dose–response association between BPA urinary concentrations and implantation failure

    Association of Accelerometry-Measured Physical Activity and Cardiovascular Events in Mobility-Limited Older Adults: The LIFE (Lifestyle Interventions and Independence for Elders) Study.

    BACKGROUND:Data are sparse regarding the value of physical activity (PA) surveillance among older adults-particularly among those with mobility limitations. The objective of this study was to examine longitudinal associations between objectively measured daily PA and the incidence of cardiovascular events among older adults in the LIFE (Lifestyle Interventions and Independence for Elders) study. METHODS AND RESULTS:Cardiovascular events were adjudicated based on medical records review, and cardiovascular risk factors were controlled for in the analysis. Home-based activity data were collected by hip-worn accelerometers at baseline and at 6, 12, and 24&nbsp;months postrandomization to either a physical activity or health education intervention. LIFE study participants (n=1590; age 78.9±5.2 [SD] years; 67.2% women) at baseline had an 11% lower incidence of experiencing a subsequent cardiovascular event per 500&nbsp;steps taken per day based on activity data (hazard ratio, 0.89; 95% confidence interval, 0.84-0.96; P=0.001). At baseline, every 30&nbsp;minutes spent performing activities ≥500&nbsp;counts per minute (hazard ratio, 0.75; confidence interval, 0.65-0.89 [P=0.001]) were also associated with a lower incidence of cardiovascular events. Throughout follow-up (6, 12, and 24&nbsp;months), both the number of steps per day (per 500&nbsp;steps; hazard ratio, 0.90, confidence interval, 0.85-0.96 [P=0.001]) and duration of activity ≥500&nbsp;counts per minute (per 30&nbsp;minutes; hazard ratio, 0.76; confidence interval, 0.63-0.90 [P=0.002]) were significantly associated with lower cardiovascular event rates. CONCLUSIONS:Objective measurements of physical activity via accelerometry were associated with cardiovascular events among older adults with limited mobility (summary score &gt;10 on the Short Physical Performance Battery) both using baseline and longitudinal data.     Deaf individuals’ bilingual abilities: American Sign Language proficiency, reading skills, and family characteristics

    The current study investigated the bilingual abilities of 55 Deaf individuals, examining both American Sign Language (ASL) competency and English reading skills. Results revealed a positive relationship between ASL competency and English skills, with highly competent signers scoring higher on a measure of reading comprehension. Additionally, family characteristics (e.g., parental education level, family hearing status) were entered into the analysis to ascertain their effect on Deaf individuals’ bilingual abilities. The findings support the theory that competency in ASL may serve as a bridge to the acquisition of English print. Moreover, the findings provide support for the critical period hypothesis for first language acquisition and its later impact on other cognitive and academic skills

    Reconstruction of primary vertices at the ATLAS experiment in Run 1 proton–proton collisions at the LHC

    This paper presents the method and performance of primary vertex reconstruction in proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment during Run 1 of the LHC. The studies presented focus on data taken during 2012 at a centre-of-mass energy of √s=8 TeV. The performance has been measured as a function of the number of interactions per bunch crossing over a wide range, from one to seventy. The measurement of the position and size of the luminous region and its use as a constraint to improve the primary vertex resolution are discussed. A longitudinal vertex position resolution of about 30μm is achieved for events with high multiplicity of reconstructed tracks. The transverse position resolution is better than 20μm and is dominated by the precision on the size of the luminous region. An analytical model is proposed to describe the primary vertex reconstruction efficiency as a function of the number of interactions per bunch crossing and of the longitudinal size of the luminous region. Agreement between the data and the predictions of this model is better than 3% up to seventy interactions per bunch crossing

    Effects of Testing and Disclosing Ancestry-Specific Genetic Risk for Kidney Failure on Patients and Health Care Professionals: A Randomized Clinical Trial

    Importance: Risk variants in the apolipoprotein L1 (APOL1 [OMIM 603743]) gene on chromosome 22 are common in individuals of West African ancestry and confer increased risk of kidney failure for people with African ancestry and hypertension. Whether disclosing APOL1 genetic testing results to patients of African ancestry and their clinicians affects blood pressure, kidney disease screening, or patient behaviors is unknown. Objective: To determine the effects of testing and disclosing APOL1 genetic results to patients of African ancestry with hypertension and their clinicians. Design, Setting, and Participants: This pragmatic randomized clinical trial randomly assigned 2050 adults of African ancestry with hypertension and without existing chronic kidney disease in 2 US health care systems from November 1, 2014, through November 28, 2016; the final date of follow-up was January 16, 2018. Patients were randomly assigned to undergo immediate (intervention) or delayed (waiting list control group) APOL1 testing in a 7:1 ratio. Statistical analysis was performed from May 1, 2018, to July 31, 2020. Interventions: Patients randomly assigned to the intervention group received APOL1 genetic testing results from trained staff; their clinicians received results through clinical decision support in electronic health records. Waiting list control patients received the results after their 12-month follow-up visit. Main Outcomes and Measures: Coprimary outcomes were the change in 3-month systolic blood pressure and 12-month urine kidney disease screening comparing intervention patients with high-risk APOL1 genotypes and those with low-risk APOL1 genotypes. Secondary outcomes compared these outcomes between intervention group patients with high-risk APOL1 genotypes and controls. Exploratory analyses included psychobehavioral factors. Results: Among 2050 randomly assigned patients (1360 women [66%]; mean [SD] age, 53 [10] years), the baseline mean (SD) systolic blood pressure was significantly higher in patients with high-risk APOL1 genotypes vs those with low-risk APOL1 genotypes and controls (137 [21] vs 134 [19] vs 133 [19] mm Hg; P =.003 for high-risk vs low-risk APOL1 genotypes; P =.001 for high-risk APOL1 genotypes vs controls). At 3 months, the mean (SD) change in systolic blood pressure was significantly greater in patients with high-risk APOL1 genotypes vs those with low-risk APOL1 genotypes (6 [18] vs 3 [18] mm Hg; P =.004) and controls (6 [18] vs 3 [19] mm Hg; P =.01). At 12 months, there was a 12% increase in urine kidney disease testing among patients with high-risk APOL1 genotypes (from 39 of 234 [17%] to 68 of 234 [29%]) vs a 6% increase among those with low-risk APOL1 genotypes (from 278 of 1561 [18%] to 377 of 1561 [24%]; P =.10) and a 7% increase among controls (from 33 of 255 [13%] to 50 of 255 [20%]; P =.01). In response to testing, patients with high-risk APOL1 genotypes reported more changes in lifestyle (a subjective measure that included better dietary and exercise habits; 129 of 218 [59%] vs 547 of 1468 [37%]; P \u3c.001) and increased blood pressure medication use (21 of 218 [10%] vs 68 of 1468 [5%]; P =.005) vs those with low-risk APOL1 genotypes; 1631 of 1686 (97%) declared they would get tested again. Conclusions and Relevance: In this randomized clinical trial, disclosing APOL1 genetic testing results to patients of African ancestry with hypertension and their clinicians was associated with a greater reduction in systolic blood pressure, increased kidney disease screening, and positive self-reported behavior changes in those with high-risk genotypes.     Search for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks in √s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks is presented. Final states containing third-generation quarks and miss- ing transverse momentum are considered. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess of events above the estimated backgrounds is observed. The results are in- terpreted in the framework of simplified models of spin-0 dark-matter mediators. For colour- neutral spin-0 mediators produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a pair of dark-matter particles, mediator masses below 50 GeV are excluded assuming a dark-matter candidate mass of 1 GeV and unitary couplings. For scalar and pseudoscalar mediators produced in association with bottom quarks, the search sets limits on the production cross- section of 300 times the predicted rate for mediators with masses between 10 and 50 GeV and assuming a dark-matter mass of 1 GeV and unitary coupling. Constraints on colour- charged scalar simplified models are also presented. Assuming a dark-matter particle mass of 35 GeV, mediator particles with mass below 1.1 TeV are excluded for couplings yielding a dark-matter relic density consistent with measurements

    Theory and Practice in the Speaking Lab: Speech Assignments and Rhetorical Assumptions

    This essay seeks to carve out an area of convergence between two intellectual practices typically viewed as discrete. Indeed the perceived differences between pedagogical objectives in a speaking lab and theoretical approaches to speech pedagogy are so great that their relationship is almost always grasped in distinct terms. The words speaking lab and theory themselves evoke radically different teaching concerns, sharply contrasting instructional approaches, and keenly antithetical groups of practitioners. Speaking Lab typically signifies a space reserved for students who need \u27extra\u27 help before they can be expected to perform at a \u27mainstream\u27 level. It is a sign for a type of instruction directed at levels commonly understood as low or remedial. And it connotes a group of teachers concerned exclusively with practical issues, the nuts and bolts of classroom instruction. Equally unambiguous is the association of theory with abstract preoccupations and conceptual concerns. It is a sign for instruction aimed at the most advanced level, a challenge issued exclusively to the gifted, a ticket for admission to the \u27cream of the crop\u27 club
