Statistical Models of At-grade Intersection Accidents
DTFH61-92-C-00031The objective of this research was to develop statistical models of the relationship between traffic accidents and highway geometric elements for at-grade intersections. These models also incorporated the effect of traffic control features and traffic volumes on intersection accidents. The data base used to develop the models was obtained from the California Department of Transportation. Field data were also collected for a sample of urban, four-leg, signalized intersections to provide data on additional geometric design variables and turning-movement counts that were not available from existing highway agency files. The statistical modeling approaches used in the research included Poisson, lognormal, negative binomial, and logistic regression, as well as discriminant and cluster analysis. Regression models of the relationships between accidents and intersection geometric design, traffic control, and traffic volume variables were found to explain between 16 and 38% of the variability in the accident data. However, most of that variability was explained by the traffic volume variables considered; geometric design variables accounted for only a very small additional portion of the variability. An evaluation of hard-copy police accident reports by three independent reviewers for a sample of eight urban, four-leg, signalized intersections found that only 5 to 14% of the accidents had causes that appeared to be related to geometric design features of the intersections
Hard-Sphere Fluids in Contact with Curved Substrates
The properties of a hard-sphere fluid in contact with hard spherical and
cylindrical walls are studied. Rosenfeld's density functional theory (DFT) is
applied to determine the density profile and surface tension for wide
ranges of radii of the curved walls and densities of the hard-sphere fluid.
Particular attention is paid to investigate the curvature dependence and the
possible existence of a contribution to that is proportional to the
logarithm of the radius of curvature. Moreover, by treating the curved wall as
a second component at infinite dilution we provide an analytical expression for
the surface tension of a hard-sphere fluid close to arbitrary hard convex
walls. The agreement between the analytical expression and DFT is good. Our
results show no signs for the existence of a logarithmic term in the curvature

A statistical interpretation of the correlation between intermediate mass fragment multiplicity and transverse energy
Multifragment emission following Xe+Au collisions at 30, 40, 50 and 60 AMeV
has been studied with multidetector systems covering nearly 4-pi in solid
angle. The correlations of both the intermediate mass fragment and light
charged particle multiplicities with the transverse energy are explored. A
comparison is made with results from a similar system, Xe+Bi at 28 AMeV. The
experimental trends are compared to statistical model predictions.Comment: 7 pages, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Rare Decays of \Lambda_b->\Lambda + \gamma and \Lambda_b ->\Lambda + l^{+} l^{-} in the Light-cone Sum Rules
Within the Standard Model, we investigate the weak decays of and with the light-cone
sum rules approach. The higher twist distribution amplitudes of
baryon to the leading conformal spin are included in the sum rules for
transition form factors. Our results indicate that the higher twist
distribution amplitudes almost have no influences on the transition form
factors retaining the heavy quark spin symmetry, while such corrections can
result in significant impacts on the form factors breaking the heavy quark spin
symmetry. Two phenomenological models (COZ and FZOZ) for the wave function of
baryon are also employed in the sum rules for a comparison, which can
give rise to the form factors approximately 5 times larger than that in terms
of conformal expansion. Utilizing the form factors calculated in LCSR, we then
perform a careful study on the decay rate, polarization asymmetry and
forward-backward asymmetry, with respect to the decays of , .Comment: 38 pages, 15 figures, some typos are corrected and more references

The Charge Form Factor of the Neutron from the Reaction \pol{2H}(\pol{e},e'n)p
We report on the first measurement of spin-correlation parameters in
quasifree electron scattering from vector-polarized deuterium. Polarized
electrons were injected into an electron storage ring at a beam energy of
720~MeV. A Siberian snake was employed to preserve longitudinal polarization at
the interaction point. Vector-polarized deuterium was produced by an atomic
beam source and injected into an open-ended cylindrical cell, internal to the
electron storage ring. The spin correlation parameter A^V_{ed} was measured for
the reaction \pol{2H}(\pol{e},e'n)p at a four-momentum transfer squared of 0.21
(GeV/c)^2 from which a value for the charge form factor of the neutron was

A Model for the Development of the Rhizobial and Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Symbioses in Legumes and Its Use to Understand the Roles of Ethylene in the Establishment of these two Symbioses
We propose a model depicting the development of nodulation and arbuscular mycorrhizae. Both processes are dissected into many steps, using Pisum sativum L. nodulation mutants as a guideline. For nodulation, we distinguish two main developmental programs, one epidermal and one cortical. Whereas Nod factors alone affect the cortical program, bacteria are required to trigger the epidermal events. We propose that the two programs of the rhizobial symbiosis evolved separately and that, over time, they came to function together. The distinction between these two programs does not exist for arbuscular mycorrhizae development despite events occurring in both root tissues. Mutations that affect both symbioses are restricted to the epidermal program. We propose here sites of action and potential roles for ethylene during the formation of the two symbioses with a specific hypothesis for nodule organogenesis. Assuming the epidermis does not make ethylene, the microsymbionts probably first encounter a regulatory level of ethylene at the epidermis–outermost cortical cell layer interface. Depending on the hormone concentrations there, infection will either progress or be blocked. In the former case, ethylene affects the cortex cytoskeleton, allowing reorganization that facilitates infection; in the latter case, ethylene acts on several enzymes that interfere with infection thread growth, causing it to abort. Throughout this review, the difficulty of generalizing the roles of ethylene is emphasized and numerous examples are given to demonstrate the diversity that exists in plants
Measurement of Transverse Single-Spin Asymmetries for Mid-rapidity Production of Neutral Pions and Charged Hadrons in Polarized p+p Collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV
The transverse single-spin asymmetries of neutral pions and non-identified
charged hadrons have been measured at mid-rapidity in polarized proton-proton
collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV. The data cover a transverse momentum (p_T)
range 0.5-5.0 GeV/c for charged hadrons and 1.0-5.0 GeV/c for neutral pions, at
a Feynman-x (x_F) value of approximately zero. The asymmetries seen in this
previously unexplored kinematic region are consistent with zero within
statistical errors of a few percent. In addition, the inclusive charged hadron
cross section at mid-rapidity from 0.5 < p_T < 7.0 GeV/c is presented and
compared to NLO pQCD calculations. Successful description of the unpolarized
cross section above ~2 GeV/c using NLO pQCD suggests that pQCD is applicable in

Formation of dense partonic matter in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC: Experimental evaluation by the PHENIX collaboration
Extensive experimental data from high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions were
recorded using the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider
(RHIC). The comprehensive set of measurements from the first three years of
RHIC operation includes charged particle multiplicities, transverse energy,
yield ratios and spectra of identified hadrons in a wide range of transverse
momenta (p_T), elliptic flow, two-particle correlations, non-statistical
fluctuations, and suppression of particle production at high p_T. The results
are examined with an emphasis on implications for the formation of a new state
of dense matter. We find that the state of matter created at RHIC cannot be

Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS
The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at
the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS
detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4
fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to
Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks
corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new
structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is
also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes.

Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS
We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a
significant distance from their production point into a final state containing
charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is
conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV
and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS
detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles
is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We
observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of
supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the
neutralino lifetime. Limits are presented for different squark and neutralino
