    Seq2Seq-SC: End-to-End Semantic Communication Systems with Pre-trained Language Model

    While semantic communication is expected to bring unprecedented communication efficiency in comparison to classical communication, many challenges must be resolved to realize its potential. In this work, we provide a realistic semantic network dubbed seq2seq-SC, which is compatible to 5G NR and can work with generalized text dataset utilizing pre-trained language model. We also utilize a performance metric (SBERT) which can accurately measure semantic similarity and show that seq2seq-SC achieves superior performance while extracting semantically meaningful information.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, 3 table

    Cultural variations in ideal and momentary hedonic balance: Does a more negative ideal protect Russian Americans from daily stress?

    The association between perceived stress with heightened negative emotions and dampened positive emotions is well established. Much less clear, however, is the extent to which ideal and experienced levels of hedonic balance (i.e., the difference in intensities between positive and negative emotions) predict stress across cultural contexts. There is wide cultural variation in dominant models of emotions; for example, the Russian cultural context is thought to emphasize low hedonic balance relative to European American or Hispanic American cultural contexts. Thirty-two European Americans, 25 Hispanic Americans, 33 Asian Americans, and 20 Russian Americans provided reports of ideal and momentary hedonic balance. Momentary reports were sampled over 10 days. Perceived levels of stress were assessed at the beginning and at the end of the study. There were cultural group differences in ideal and momentary hedonic balance, with Russian Americans reporting lower ideal and momentary hedonic balance than Hispanic Americans. Across cultural groups, lower levels of momentary hedonic balance were predictive of perceived stress. In the Russian American group, but not the other groups, lower ideal hedonic balance was associated with lower levels of perceived stress. These results suggest that the Russian cultural model of emotions shape both ideal and momentary hedonic balance, with lower levels of ideal hedonic protecting against the potentially stressful impact of low experienced hedonic balance

    Behavior of NiTiNb SMA wires under recovery stress or prestressing

    The recovery stress of martensitic shape-memory alloy [SMA] wires can be used to confine concrete, and the confining effectiveness of the SMA wires was previously proved through experimental tests. However, the behavior of SMA wires under recovery stress has not been seriously investigated. Thus, this study conducted a series of tests of NiTiNb martensitic SMA wires under recovery stress with varying degrees of prestrain on the wires and compared the behavior under recovery stress with that under prestressing of the wires. The remaining stress was reduced by the procedure of additional strain loading and unloading. More additional strains reduced more remaining stresses. When the SMA wires were heated up to the transformation temperature under prestress, the stress on the wires increased due to the state transformation. Furthermore, the stress decreased with a decreasing temperature of the wires down to room temperature. The stress of the NiTiNb wires was higher than the prestress, and the developed stress seemed to depend on the composition of the SMAs. When an additional strain was subsequently loaded and unloaded on the prestressed SMA wires, the remaining stress decreased. Finally, the remaining stress becomes zero when loading and unloading a specific large strain

    Bond strength of concrete confined by SMA wire jackets

    AbstractThis study pursuits a goal to assess bond strength of concrete confined by shape memory alloy (SMA) wire jackets that can provide active confinement due to shape memory effect. This study uses NiTiNb SMA wires which show more wider temperature hysteresis than normal NiTi SMA wire. Thus, NiTiNb SMA wires are more applicable for the use of shape memory effect for civil structures which are exposed severe environmental conditions such as large temperature variation. Concrete cylinders of 200 mm × 100 mm (LxD) are used for this study. The SMA wire jackets increases the bond strength of concrete and changes the failure mode from split to pull-out failure. A particular thing in the tests is a split crack developing even with the SMA wire jackets. In general, the crack is not developed in the pull-out mode failure. The SMA wire jackets increase the bonding strength even with the crack developing since it seems that they provide active confinement as well as external passive confinement

    Despite global commitments and efforts, a gender-based division of paid and unpaid work persists. To identify how psychological factors, national policies, and the broader sociocultural context contribute to this inequality, we assessed parental-leave intentions in young adults (18–30 years old) planning to have children (N = 13,942; 8,880 identified as women; 5,062 identified as men) across 37 countries that varied in parental-leave policies and societal gender equality. In all countries, women intended to take longer leave than men. National parental-leave policies and women’s political representation partially explained cross-national variations in the gender gap. Gender gaps in leave intentions were paradoxically larger in countries with more gender-egalitarian parental-leave policies (i.e., longer leave available to both fathers and mothers). Interestingly, this cross-national variation in the gender gap was driven by cross-national variations in women’s (rather than men’s) leave intentions. Financially generous leave and gender-egalitarian policies (linked to men’s higher uptake in prior research) were not associated with leave intentions in men. Rather, men’s leave intentions were related to their individual gender attitudes. Leave intentions were inversely related to career ambitions.     Tears evoke the intention to offer social support: A systematic investigation of the interpersonal effects of emotional crying across 41 countries

    Tearful crying is a ubiquitous and likely uniquely human phenomenon. Scholars have argued that emotional tears serve an attachment function: Tears are thought to act as a social glue by evoking social support intentions. Initial experimental studies supported this proposition across several methodologies, but these were conducted almost exclusively on participants from North America and Europe, resulting in limited generalizability. This project examined the tears-social support intentions effect and possible mediating and moderating variables in a fully pre-registered study across 7007 participants (24,886 ratings) and 41 countries spanning all populated continents. Participants were presented with four pictures out of 100 possible targets with or without digitally-added tears. We confirmed the main prediction that seeing a tearful individual elicits the intention to support, d = 0.49 [0.43, 0.55]. Our data suggest that this effect could be mediated by perceiving the crying target as warmer and more helpless, feeling more connected, as well as feeling more empathic concern for the crier, but not by an increase in personal distress of the observer. The effect was moderated by the situational valence, identifying the target as part of one's group, and trait empathic concern. A neutral situation, high trait empathic concern, and low identification increased the effect. We observed high heterogeneity across countries that was, via split-half validation, best explained by country-level GDP per capita and subjective well-being with stronger effects for higher-scoring countries. These findings suggest that tears can function as social glue, providing one possible explanation why emotional crying persists into adulthood.</p

    A multi-country test of brief reappraisal interventions on emotions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

    The COVID-19 pandemic has increased negative emotions and decreased positive emotions globally. Left unchecked, these emotional changes might have a wide array of adverse impacts. To reduce negative emotions and increase positive emotions, we tested the effectiveness of reappraisal, an emotion-regulation strategy that modifies how one thinks about a situation. Participants from 87 countries and regions (n = 21,644) were randomly assigned to one of two brief reappraisal interventions (reconstrual or repurposing) or one of two control conditions (active or passive). Results revealed that both reappraisal interventions (vesus both control conditions) consistently reduced negative emotions and increased positive emotions across different measures. Reconstrual and repurposing interventions had similar effects. Importantly, planned exploratory analyses indicated that reappraisal interventions did not reduce intentions to practice preventive health behaviours. The findings demonstrate the viability of creating scalable, low-cost interventions for use around the world

    Active SMA Fibers&rsquo; Effect on the Pullout Behavior of a Steel Bar Embedded in Concrete

    This study investigated the bond behavior and radial crack between concrete and reinforcing bars using cold-drawn shape memory alloy (SMA) crimped fibers controlled by the temperature and volume fraction of the fibers. In this novel approach, the concrete specimens containing cold-drawn SMA crimped fibers with 1.0% and 1.5% volume fractions of cold-drawn SMA fibers were prepared. After that, the specimens were heated to 150 &deg;C to generate recovery stress and activate prestressing within the concrete. The bond strength of specimens was estimated by pullout test using the universal testing machine (UTM). Furthermore, the cracking patterns were investigated using radial strain measured by a circumferential extensometer. The results showed that adding up to 1.5% of SMA fibers improved the bond strength by 47.9% and reduced radial strain by more than 54%. Thus, heating specimens containing SMA fibers showed improved bond behavior compared with non-heated specimens with the same volume fraction
