Genetic variation in a small bivalve along a retreating glacier fjord, King George Island, Antarctica.

Climate change is strongly influencing regions of Antarctica but the consequences on microevolutionary processes have been little studied. Patterns of population genetic diversity were analysed in the Antarctic bivalve Nuculana inaequisculpta (Protobranchia: Nuculanidae) from a fjord with 70 years of documented climate-forced glacier retreat. Thirty-nine individuals from five sites at different distances from the glacier terminus were collected, and the COI gene was sequenced from each individual. No statistically significant genetic differentiation was found between sites nor a significant correlation between the proximity of glaciers and genetic diversity, suggesting a high dispersal capability and therefore, a planktonic larval stage for this species. Nevertheless, we encourage increasing the sample size and number of loci in future studies to confirm our findings

¿Qué hacen las/os jóvenes filósofas/os ahora? La filosofía en diálogo interdisciplinar

Con la celebración de las jornadas por el Día Mundial de la Filosofía se pretende acercar la filosofía a la ciudadanía, pero también hacerla partícipe. El halo de complejidad y los recelos al desarrollo del pensamiento crítico hacen que pase desapercibido que la filosofía es un punto de convergencia entre disciplinas y prácticas de lo más variado y de maneras muy sorprendentes. Este carácter creativo es una herramienta muy útil para socavar las imposiciones veladas del empeño instrumentalista y utilitarista en condenar el estudio de lo humano y lo social. De ello la importancia de hacer filosofía en y con los espacios públicos. El asombroso despliegue que la ciencia y la tecnología han tenido en las últimas décadas promete un bienestar general que no acaba de llegar. El progreso de nuestras sociedades es indisociable de la reflexión crítica y plural, pero también de un hacer que muchas veces se ve paralizado en lo teórico. Este artículo colectivo recoge diferentes modos en que los investigadores e investigadoras jóvenes del IFS-CSIC han llegado a la filosofía, la comprenden y desarrollan. Se exponen, en definitiva, distintas visiones, prácticas y herramientas para la construcción social de dicha reflexión

In the multiple realms and layers that comprise the contemporary Spanish theatrical landscape, “crisis” would seem to be the word that most often lingers in the air, as though it were a common mantra, ready to roll off the tongue of so many theatre professionals with such enormous ease, and even enthusiasm, that one is prompted to wonder whether it might indeed be a miracle that the contemporary technological revolution – coupled with perpetual quandaries concerning public and private funding for the arts – had not by now brought an end to the evolution of the oldest of live arts, or, at the very least, an end to drama as we know it

De acuerdo con La GFN (Global Footprint Network) y la NEF (New Economics Fundation), anualmente se hacen estimaciones de la velocidad con que se consumen los recursos generados en el planeta y estimaron que los recursos naturales producidos en la tierra durante un año fueron agotados en solo ocho meses. Con la disminución gradual de los recursos que el planeta provee de forma sostenible, por sobreexplotación de los recursos naturales, acumulación de carbono en la atmósfera y la imposibilidad de transformar la basura generada. Sólo la bioeconomía, basada en la biotecnología que utiliza recurso biológico y materias primas renovables para generar mejores alimentos, con mínimos residuos puede ayudar a mitigar el daño al medio ambiente y disminuir los gastos en salud, generando a su vez ingresos y trabajo en forma sustentable. El desarrollo de biofabricas a través de Biotecnologia permitirá establecer un nuevo tipo de equilibrio economía, social y ambiental. Influenza Vaccine Effectiveness in Preventing Influenza A(H3N2)-Related Hospitalizations in Adults Targeted for Vaccination by Type of Vaccine: A Hospital-Based Test-Negative Study, 2011–2012 A(H3N2) Predominant Influenza Season, Valencia, Spain

<div><p>Background</p><p>Most evidence of the effectiveness of influenza vaccines comes from studies conducted in primary care, but less is known about their effectiveness in preventing serious complications. Here, we examined the influenza vaccine effectiveness (IVE) against hospitalization with PCR-confirmed influenza in the predominant A(H3N2) 2011–2012 influenza season.</p><p>Methods</p><p>A hospital-based, test-negative study was conducted in nine hospitals in Valencia, Spain. All emergency admissions with a predefined subset of symptoms were eligible. We enrolled consenting adults age 18 and over, targeted for influenza vaccination because of comorbidity, with symptoms of influenza-like-illness within seven days of admission. We estimated IVE as (1-adjusted vaccination odds ratio)*100 after accounting for major confounders, calendar time and recruitment hospital.</p><p>Results</p><p>The subjects included 544 positive for influenza A(H3N2) and 1,370 negative for influenza admissions. Age was an IVE modifying factor. Regardless of vaccine administration, IVE was 72% (38 to 88%) in subjects aged under 65 and 21% (−5% to 40%) in subjects aged 65 and over. By type of vaccine, the IVE of classical intramuscular split-influenza vaccine, used in subjects 18 to 64, was 68% (12% to 88%). The IVE for intradermal and virosomal influenza vaccines, used in subjects aged 65 and over, was 39% (11% to 58%) and 16% (−39% to 49%), respectively.</p><p>Conclusions</p><p>The split-influenza vaccine was effective in preventing influenza-associated hospitalizations in adults aged under 65. The intradermal vaccine was moderately effective in those aged 65 and over.</p></div
