Student-Athlete: A Study of Student-Athlete Workload Compared with Traditional Student Workload

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to collect and analyze data on the workload of students and student-athletes to determine if there is a significant difference in the workloads of student-athletes compared with non-athletes, including undergraduate and graduate students. It was hypothesized that student-athletes would spend more time in athletic activities, but would sacrifice time in other areas. Method: This analysis of variance study collected data from 22 students at South Dakota State University using the Student Activity Log and categorized those students using a combination of three of six labels (student-athlete or non-athlete, undergraduate or graduate, and working or nonworking). Once students were categorized, they submitted data using the Student Activity Log to show how much time was spent doing various activities, which were divided into the four major groups Academic, Athletic, Work, and Social. Those hours were then analyzed using a Mann-Whitney U Test to determine significant differences in the time expenditures between student-athletes and non-athletes. Statistical Analysis: Results: There was a significant difference in the time demands between student-athletes and nonathletes in their Academic, Athletic, and Work activities. There was no significant difference in the time demands between student-athletes and non-athletes in their Social activities. When adjusted to include only undergraduate students, the Academic time spent was no longer significantly different, but the results in the other categories remained the same. Conclusions: The time demands on student-athletes is similar to that of other students on campus in academic and social categories when only undergraduates are considered, but the time spent on athletic participation replaces that of having a job among other students. When all participants are included, athletes spend more time on academics than non-athletes. More research is needed to further validate these results

Solar integration in a district heating and cooling network

The purpose of this project is to perform an analysis of the feasibility of integrating solar energy into a district network, that supplies the demand of the domestic hot water, space heating and cooling. The project is divided into two main parts: the first part makes an exposition of the district networks, their situation in Spain, as well as the main solar heating and cooling systems and their components. The second part is the case of study where the district network is defined and the performance of the solar installation model are analysed, as well as the most significant elements that make up the system are presented.Ingeniería de la Energí

Indicadores lingüísticos para un discurso igualitario

    Get PDF

In this paper, we present a super-realtime optimization of the work done by Christian Soler’s algorithm for tennis table ball and bounce detection. We also provide a proof-of-concept in the form of a C++/CUDA program that achieves rates of up to 1,000 frames per second processed

Measuring Disaster Resiliency in the Rio Grande Valley

People are now becoming more conscious of the effects of climate change. They are seeking to understand how to manage their resources and prepare for when a disaster strikes. The growing studies of disaster resilience lend that opportunity. In this spatial and temporal study, disaster resilience was measured for each census tract within the four counties of the Rio Grande Valley. Utilizing GIS tools and methods, the study examines resilience patterns between 2010 and 2017. Results showed that even though various census tracts from each of the four counties increased in resilience from 2010 to 2017, the overall total resilience for each county still decreased throughout the study years. Findings also showed the importance of socio-economic resiliency in the study areas

A missense variant (P10L) of the melanopsin (OPN4) gene in seasonal affective disorder

Background: Melanopsin, a non-visual photopigment, may play a role in aberrant responses to low winter light levels in Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). We hypothesize that functional sequence variation in the melanopsin gene could contribute to increasing the light needed for normal functioning during winter in SAD. Methods: Associations between alleles, genotypes, and haplotypes of melanopsin in SAD participants (n = 130) were performed relative to controls with no history of psychopathology (n = 90). Results: SAD participants had a higher frequency of the homozygous minor genotype (T/T) for the missense variant rs2675703 (P10L) than controls, compared to the combined frequencies of C/C and C/T. Individuals with the T/T genotype were 5.6 times more likely to be in the SAD group than the control group, and all 7 (5%) of individuals with the T/T genotype at P10L were in the SAD group. Limitations: The study examined only one molecular component of the non-visual light input pathway, and recruitment methods for the comparison groups differed. Conclusion: These findings support the hypothesis that melanopsin variants may predispose some individuals to SAD. Characterizing the genetic basis for deficits in the non-visual light input pathway has the potential to define mechanisms underlying the pathological response to light in SAD, which may improve treatment. © 2008 Elsevier B.V
