SBND: Status of the Fermilab Short-Baseline Near Detector
SBND (Short-Baseline Near Detector) will be a 112 ton liquid argon TPC neutrino detector located 110m from the target of the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam. SBND, together with the MicroBooNE and ICARUS-T600 detectors at 470m and 600m, respectively, make up the Fermilab Short-Baseline Neutrino (SBN) Program. SBN will search for new physics in the neutrino sector by testing the sterile neutrino hypothesis in the 1 eV 2 mass-squared region with unrivaled sensitivity. SBND will measure the un-oscillated beam flavor composition to enable precision searches for neutrino oscillations via both electron neutrino appearance and muon neutrino disappearance in the far detectors. With a data sample of millions of neutrino interactions (both electron and muon neutrinos), SBND will also perform detailed studies of the physics of neutrino-argon interactions, even in rare channels. In addition, SBND plays an important role in an on-going R & D effort within neutrino physics to develop the LArTPC technology toward many-kiloton-scale detectors for next generation long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. Iodine uptake and distribution in horticultural and fruit tree species.
Iodine is an essential microelement for humans and iodine deficiency disorder (IDD) is one of the most widespread nutrient-deficiency diseases in the world. Iodine biofortification of plants provides an attractive opportunity to increase iodine intake in humans and to prevent and control IDD. This study was conducted to investigate the iodine uptake and accumulation in edible portion of two fruit trees: plum and nectarine, and two horticultural crops: tomato and potato. Two type of iodine treatments (soil and foliar spray application), and, for fresh market tomato, two production systems (open field and greenhouse hydroponic culture) were tested. The distribution of iodine in potato stem and leaves, and in plum tree fruits, leaves, and branches was investigated. Iodine content of potato tubers after postharvest storage and processing (cooking), and iodine content of nectarine fruits after postharvest storage and processing (peeling) were also determined. Differences in iodine accumulation were observed among the four crops, between applications, and between production systems. In open field, the maximum iodine content ranged from 9.5 and 14.3 \u3bcg 100 g 121 for plum and nectarine fruit, to 89.4 and 144.0 \u3bcg 100 g 121 for potato tuber and tomato fruit, respectively. These results showed that nectarine and plum tree accumulated significantly lower amounts of iodine in their edible tissues, in comparison with potato and tomato. The experiments also indicated hydroponic culture as the most efficient system for iodine uptake in tomato, since its fresh fruits accumulated up to 2423 \u3bcg 100 g 121 of iodine. Iodine was stored mainly in the leaves, in all species investigated. Only a small portion of iodine was moved to plum tree branches and fruits, and to potato stems and tubers. No differences in iodine content after fruit peeling was observed. A significant increase in iodine content of potato was observed after baking, whereas a significant decrease was observed after boiling. We concluded that iodine biofortified fresh market tomato salad, both from field and hydroponics cultivation, and baked potatoes can be considered as potential functional foods for IDD prevention
Role of endoscopic endonasal approach for craniopharyngiomas extending into the third ventricle in adults
Introduction. Recent advancements in endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) have favored its adoption for craniopharyngiomas extended to 3rd ventricle (3VCPs). However, for lack of extensive series, its outcome, limits, and indications remain debated.
Research question. To assess the EEA results of for 3VCPs and identify those factors determining the choice of this approach.
Material and Methods. Records of patients with 3VCPs, consecutively operated through an EEA at our Institution were retrospectively analyzed. Demographic and clinico-radiological data, rate of tumor resection, complications and outcome at follow-up were collected.
Results. Thirty-six patients (19 females, mean age: 51.1 ± 15.9 yrs) were included. Extended transplanum-transtuberculum approach was performed in all cases Radical resection was achieved in 33 patients (91.7%). At follow-up, visual deficits improved/normalized in 21 cases (58.3%), and 35 (97.2%) presented with panhypopituitarism and DI. Anatomical (displacement of the chiasm and hypothalamus), clinical (age and pre-operative visual and endocrinological function) and tumoral (consistency, presence of hydrocephalus) parameters resulted relevant in determining the choice of this approach.
Discussion and Conclusion. EEA offers a valid and direct route for 3VCPs, which permits to safely manage these tumors. In our series, EEA was chosen for tubero-infundibular forms with chiasm displaces antero-superiorly, and preferred in younger patients, with visual disturbances, comprimesed endocrinological function and no hydrocephalus. It requires a specific training and should be reserved in dedicated centers. Because no single approach is ideal for every 3VCP, all surgical options should be considered as complementary and selected basing on clinical, anatomical and tumoral features of each case
Protein S on the surface of plasma lipoproteins: a potential mechanism for protein S delivery to the atherosclerotic plaques?
The anticoagulant protein S (PS) binds phospholipids with very high affinity, but PS interaction with lipoproteins and lipidrich atherosclerotic plaques remains still poorly defined. We investigated PS in plasma lipoproteins and in atherosclerotic plaques from ten patients undergoing endarterectomy. PS was detected by Western blotting after exposure of the necrotic core to liposomes and was found to maintain its ability to bind phosphatidylserine micelles. The amounts of PS bound to low/very low-density lipoproteins in patient' plasmas were higher and more variable than those detected in healthy subjects. A direct correlation between bound PS and low-density lipoproteins (LDL), plasma levels was found only in patients (r=0.921, p<0.001), thereby leading to hypothesize that the PS-phospholipids binding may increase by oxidative processes of LDL in atherosclerotic patients. The presence of the PS into the necrotic core of atherosclerotic plaques and on the surface of lipoproteins, particularly the atherogenic LDL, suggests a LDL-based delivery of PS to the atherosclerotic plaques and emphasizes the deep link between plasma lipids and coagulation in cardiovascular diseases
Search for Top Squark Pair Production in the Dielectron Channel
This report describes the first search for top squark pair production in the
channel stop_1 stopbar_1 -> b bbar chargino_1 chargino_1 -> ee+jets+MEt using
74.9 +- 8.9 pb^-1 of data collected using the D0 detector. A 95% confidence
level upper limit on sigma*B is presented. The limit is above the theoretical
expectation for sigma*B for this process, but does show the sensitivity of the
current D0 data set to a particular topology for new physics.Comment: Five pages, including three figures, submitted to PRD Brief Report
Search for Production via Trilepton Final States in collisions at TeV
We have searched for associated production of the lightest chargino,
, and next-to-lightest neutralino, , of the
Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model in collisions at
\mbox{ = 1.8 TeV} using the \D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron
collider. Data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 12.5 \ipb
were examined for events containing three isolated leptons. No evidence for
pair production was found. Limits on
BrBr are
