and baryon production in Au+Au collisions at GeV
We report preliminary results on the centrality dependence of the
and production at mid-rapidity in GeV Au+Au
collisions from the STAR experiment. For the most central data the obtained
yields suggest a saturation of strangeness production per produced hadron. The
calculated inverse slope parameter may indicate an earlier freeze-out of these
particles.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, Contribution to Quark Matter 2002,

Multi-strange particle production in relativistic heavy ion collisions at GeV
We present preliminary STAR results on measurements of multi-strange
particles , and their anti-particles from Au+Au and Cu+Cu at
GeV collisions. In order to better understand the role of
strangeness enhancement in nucleus-nucleus collisions and its scaling
properties with system size, we compare the results from Au+Au and Cu+Cu
reactions for different event centrality classes. Strangeness enhancement is
discussed in the context of multi-strange to pion ratios. Finally,
ratio is shown for different systems and energies for a
systematic study
Heavy-Ion Physics with ALICE
The ALICE detector, expected to start operating at the Large Hadron Collider this year, was designed specifically for the study of heavy-ion collisions. In this paper we recall the main features of the apparatus and give some examples of the expected physics performance
The "Jihadi Wolf" threat. The evolution of terror narratives between the (cyber-)social ecosystem and self-radicalization "ego-system"
The research conducted by the ECTC Advisory Group on Online Terrorist Propaganda between October 2016 and April 2017 was presented in the 1st ECTC Conference on Online Terrorist Propaganda (10-11 April 2017) and resulted in the following publication
Strangeness enhancement at midrapidity in Pb–Pb collisions at 158 A GeV/ c : A comparison with VENUS and RQMD models
Recently the WA97 Collaboration has measured , , , and negative particle yields and transverse mass spectra at central rapidity in Pb–Pb and p–Pb collisions at 158 A GeV/c. These results are compared with the predictions of two of the most widely used event generators for heavy-ion collisions: VENUS 4.12 and RQMD 2.3. Both models predict that enhancements increase with the strangeness content of the particle. They fail, however, to reproduce completely the measured values of yields at central rapidity. In particular, for multistrange particles, VENUS fails to reproduce both the p–Pb and the Pb–Pb data, while RQMD works for p–Pb collisions but seems to be unable to reproduce the data in Pb–Pb collisions. Moreover, the predicted behavior for strangeness production as a function of the centrality of the collision appears to be different from the observed behavior
La Contabilità pratica prima di Luca Pacioli: Origine della Partita Doppia. (Accounting Practice before Luca Pacioli: Emergence of Double entry).
The paper begins with a brief review of the principal factors that limited the development of accounting records in Italy at the turn of the 13th century. These factors were the ignorance of Arabic numerals, the non-existence of paper and the precariousness of the socio-economic conditions in many Italian regions. Despite these, the numerous monasteries found in almost all regions and the merchant enterprises in the main coastal cities, like Venice, Genoa, Pisa, etc., all kept some kind of accounting records.Baja Edad Media, contabilidad, historia, Italia, Pacioli, práctica contable. Eelgrass Restoration in San Francisco Bay: An Interdisciplinary Stated Preference Classroom Experiment
This paper aims to integrate experiential, interdisciplinary approaches into environmental economics courses through a stated preference analysis for eelgrass beds harboring aquatic plants foundational to many estuaries and coastal zones. It argues that such approaches are necessary in undergraduate education to support real-world needs in oceans and climate policy. Through collaboration with ecologists and peers, students developed willingness-to-pay measures of 42 for a 10-year restoration program for 200 acres of eelgrass (Zostera marina) in the San Francisco Bay based on open- and closed-ended elicitation formats. The experiment provides an example of overcoming the challenge of orienting students and stated preference survey respondents to a complex marine environment and meets conventional economic learning objectives
Pure mycelium materials: characteristics and applications
Mycelium is the vegetative part of Fungi. It is made up of an interconnected network of
hyphae, which are elongated cells with a complex cell wall. Fungi are able to grow on a
wide range of substrates thanks to the extended catalytic capabilities of the enzymes they
secrete and they have a modular nature, thus they grow by apical extension and lateral
branching. They are exploited for a large variety of applications, from bioremediation to
drug production. Recently, mycelial biocomposites obtained from the growth of a strain
on waste agricultural substrates have been used as materials, which have great thermal
and hydrodynamic properties, a low cost of processing and they are easily biodegraded.
Previous works from Smart Materials group showed that even pure mycelia have
promising features to be employed as materials and in nanotechnological applications.
These conclusions are further investigated in the Thesis.
The Introduction is an overview of the issues related to plastic use and production and
contains a review of the main solutions and alternatives considered up to now. In the
second part of the Introduction, mycelia and their applications are described. In Chapter
1, the possibility of finely tune morphological, chemical, hydrodynamic and mechanical
properties of pure mycelial materials is investigated by analyzing growth of Ganoderma
lucidum in liquid substrates enriched in different components. In Chapter 2, both the
porous structure and the chemical and hydrodynamic features of mycelia from
Ganoderma lucidum and Pleurotus ostreatus are exploited in the development of suitable
bioscaffolds for attachment and growth of Human Adult Fibroblasts (HDFAs)
System and Energy Dependence of Strangeness Production with STAR
The yields and spectra of strange hadrons have each been measured by STAR as
a function of centrality in 200 GeV AuAu collisions. By
comparison to measurements in pp and dAu at GeV and in
AuAu at GeV the dependence on system size and energy is
studied. Short-lived resonances, such as and ,
that may decay and regenerate in the medium, are used to examine the dynamical
evolution between production and freeze-out for these systems. Particle
production is investigated by comparison to thermal models, which assume a
simple scaling of the yield with , in order to calculate the
strangeness enhancement. Our hyperon measurements in AuAu indicate that may be a more appropriate scale for the strangeness correlation
volume. In this case canonical suppression can not be simply parameterized with
the geometrical overlap volume but will depend on the individual quark content
of each particle. This theory is tested by comparing the data from different
collision systems and centralities.Comment: Quark Matter 2005 Talk. Talk ppt file with further supporting plots
