Ultrassonografia duplex Doppler transcraniana em cães com hidrocefalia
Transcranial duplex Doppler ultrasound was performed in 32 conscious dogs presenting ventriculomegaly detected in B-mode, obtaining measures of lateral ventricles and resistance parameters of main cerebral arteries before and after 30 days of clinical treatment. The animals were distributed divided in two groups: group 1, dogs that presented remission or decrease of the neurological signs of the disease after clinical therapy; and group 2, dogs that displayed worsening of the neurological signs or clinical stability. The data were all presented in tables and were submitted to paired t test and to logistic regression models to evaluate the influence of the RI reduction on both groups. There was no significant influence of the variables in the B-mode. After the treatment, the mean resistive index (RI) was significantly lower for the group that presented clinical improvement. There was no significant difference of the mean RI reduction for the same artery when the right and left sides were compared. It could be concluded that transcranial duplex Doppler ultrasound is a method of cerebral hemodynamic assessment able to monitor more precisely the treatment of hydrocephalus in dogs and verify the responses.
The agro-industrial system regional sustainable development, a coherent strategy
The agro-industrial system represents annually circa 3,6 x 109 € in the formation of the Centro
Region of Portugal gross income and that accounts for 39% of the Portuguese overall return for
this sector. Given this dynamics it is of utmost importance to perform a consistent strategy to
promote the sustainable growth of this regional system income.
Therefore, the CERNAS/IPC research unit has developed an integrated approach bringing
together several regional actors under a networking logic that links the industrial needs with the
academia R&D capabilities, and of capacity building and entrepreneurship (2011-2013).
This strategy is rooted in the InovCluster, where CERNAS leads two anchor projects, the
in_AGRI and the ECODEEP, and collaborates with a third one, the AGRITRAINING. The
in_AGRI aims the upgrade of the system value chains by bridging the academia with the
industry in a series of workshops, supported with a knowledge transfer platform and a network
of research facilities, and ECODEEP will develop eco-efficiency tools, based on a LCA
approach to enhance the overall sustainability by improving practises and find new solutions
within an industrial ecology framework. The AGRITRAINING surveys the training needs of the
system, looking forward to complement the actual capacity building achieved by the Master
courses in Food Engineering and Environmental Management. In addition, an advanced training
in Environmental Entrepreneurship is being implemented, and an Innovation Management for
SME’s program is being designed, promoting a cultural change towards the sustainable welfare
of our present and future generations.InAGRI – Proj. n.º 3494 (Mais Centro/PORC);

Diagnosis of metastases in patients with papillary thyroid cancer by the measurement of thyroglobulin in fine needle aspirate
The widespread use of neck ultrasonography (US) during the follow-up of patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) has led to the discovery of small cervical lymph nodes (LN). Although US has a high sensitivity for diagnosing LN, fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNA) and measurement of thyroglobulin in fine needle aspirates (FNA-Tg) have proven to be invaluable tools. The aim of this study is to determine the sensitivity of the combined use of neck US, FNA biopsy and FNA-Tg for diagnosis of cervical lymph nodes. We have studied 32 patients with 44 LN detected by US, 19 classified as inflammatory and 25 as suspicious. 15 of those 25 suspicious LN had high FNA-Tg (13 of the 15 had positive cytology and 2 indeterminate). All of these 15 LN (11 patients) were proven to be PTC metastasis by histopathology. All 19 inflammatory LN and those 10/25 suspicious LN, had cytology negative for malignancy and undetectable FNA-Tg. We conclude that fine needle aspiration biopsy and FNA-Tg combined with neck US are essential for detecting positive cervical lymph nodes due to its high sensitivity and specificity and it should be considered the standard for investigating locally recurrent disease in patients with PTC.Com a introdução da ultra-sonografia cervical (USC) no seguimento dos pacientes com carcinoma papilífero de tiróide (CPT), tornou-se freqüente o encontro de pequenos linfonodos (LNs) cervicais.
Measurement of the cross section for isolated-photon plus jet production in pp collisions at √s=13 TeV using the ATLAS detector
The dynamics of isolated-photon production in association with a jet in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV are studied with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using a dataset with an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb−1. Photons are required to have transverse energies above 125 GeV. Jets are identified using the anti- algorithm with radius parameter and required to have transverse momenta above 100 GeV. Measurements of isolated-photon plus jet cross sections are presented as functions of the leading-photon transverse energy, the leading-jet transverse momentum, the azimuthal angular separation between the photon and the jet, the photon–jet invariant mass and the scattering angle in the photon–jet centre-of-mass system. Tree-level plus parton-shower predictions from Sherpa and Pythia as well as next-to-leading-order QCD predictions from Jetphox and Sherpa are compared to the measurements
RACEWALKING AND NORMAL WALKING ANALYSIS
INTRODUCTION: The purpose of the present study was to observe biomechanical variations in racewalking, starting from normal walking and continuing on up to a maximum racewalking performance supported by the athlete. Tests were carried out on a women’s racewalking team who represents Santa Catarina State at national competitions in Brazil. A GaitwayTM instrumented treadmill system was used to verify the differences between normal walking and racewalking. A few studies have been made of race walkers. Some physiological aspects indicated that the speed at which racewalking and running become equally efficient is similar to the crossover speed for conventional walking and running (Hagberg & Coyle, 1984). Another important study was done by Morgan & Martin (1986), who showed the effects of stride length alterations on racewalking economy. Their results support the hypothesis that trained subjects select locomotion patterns that are nearly optimal in terms of the aerobic demands. Cairns et al. (1986) determined that the racewalking gait exhibits some biomechanical characteristics which are different from the walking gait or running. Recently, Brisswalter et al. (1996) suggested that in well trained walkers the energy cost of walking increases with exercise duration, but walkers are able to maintain the same stride duration after the test when treadmill speed is controlled
Relationship between professional motivations and the expectation of staying at the same workplace: a cross-sectional descriptive study with physicians in Portugal
There is a global trend related to the migration of health professionals, particularly physicians, to the
most densely populated areas. In Portugal, the unequal distribution of medical professionals is
justified by the fact that in the most favoured areas, there are more career opportunities, better
infrastructures and equipment, better working conditions and supervision, more and better social
facilities and better salary. The aim of this work was to identify professional reasons associated with
the expectation of staying at the same workplace. It was selected a simple random sample of 594
physicians out of a total of 18,711 registered physicians in Northern Regional Section of the Order of
Physicians (NRSOP), Portugal Most physicians would like to stay at the same workplace due to: the prospect of training and
working at the current location, the organizational level of the unit, the level of differentiation of the
hospital/health centre, the availability to use the state-of-the-art medical and surgical technology,
better rewards, the level of work differentiation in the unit/service, the possibility of reconciling
public and private practice, good references of the current unit/working group, avoid unit/workgroup
with bad references and the prospect of career progression.
This study revealed that, for physicians, professional motivations/purposes have an influence on the
expectations of staying or not at the same workplace. Therefore, the study recommends that policy
makers should prioritize professional reasons when formulating and implementing measures to
promote the fixing of medical professionals in order to achieve greater equity in access to health care. This work is supported by: the European Structural and Investment Funds in the FEDER component,

A search for prompt lepton-jets in pp collisions at root s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector
A search is presented for a new, light boson with a mass of about 1 GeV and decaying promptly to jets of collimated electrons and/or muons (lepton-jets). The analysis is performed with 20.3 fb−1 of data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. Events are required to contain at least two lepton-jets. This study finds no statistically significant deviation from predictions of the Standard Model and places 95% confidence-level upper limits on the contribution of new phenomena beyond the SM, incuding SUSY-portal and Higgs-portal models, on the number of events with lepton-jets.We acknowledge the support of ANPCyT, Argentina; YerPhI, Armenia; ARC, Australia; BMWFW and FWF, Austria; ANAS, Azerbaijan; SSTC, Belarus; CNPq and FAPESP, Brazil; NSERC, NRC and CFI, Canada; CERN; CONICYT, Chile; CAS, MOST and NSFC, China; COLCIENCIAS, Colombia; MSMT CR, MPO CR and VSC CR, Czech Republic; DNRF, DNSRC and Lundbeck Foundation, Denmark; IN2P3-CNRS, CEADSM/IRFU, France; GNSF, Georgia; BMBF, HGF, and MPG, Germany; GSRT, Greece; RGC, Hong Kong SAR, China; ISF, I-CORE and Benoziyo Center, Israel; INFN, Italy; MEXT and JSPS, Japan; CNRST, Morocco; FOM and NWO, Netherlands; RCN, Norway; MNiSW and NCN, Poland; FCT, Portugal; MNE/IFA, Romania; MES of Russia and NRC KI, Russian Federation; JINR; MESTD, Serbia; MSSR, Slovakia; ARRS and MIZ. Search for the production of single vector-like and excited quarks in the Wt final state in pp collisions at √s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector
A search for vector-like quarks and excited quarks in events containing a top quark and a W boson in the final state is reported here. The search is based on 20.3 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data taken at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector. Events with one or two leptons, and one, two or three jets are selected with the additional requirement that at least one jet contains a b-quark. Single-lepton events are also required to contain at least one large-radius jet from the hadronic decay of a high-pTW boson or a top quark. No significant excess over the expected background is observed and upper limits on the cross-section times branching ratio for different vector-like quark and excited-quark model masses are derived. For the excited-quark production and decay to Wt with unit couplings, quarks with masses below 1500 GeV are excluded and coupling-dependent limits are set
