    Operational Research in Education

Operational Research (OR) techniques have been applied, from the early stages of the discipline, to a wide variety of issues in education. At the government level, these include questions of what resources should be allocated to education as a whole and how these should be divided amongst the individual sectors of education and the institutions within the sectors. Another pertinent issue concerns the efficient operation of institutions, how to measure it, and whether resource allocation can be used to incentivise efficiency savings. Local governments, as well as being concerned with issues of resource allocation, may also need to make decisions regarding, for example, the creation and location of new institutions or closure of existing ones, as well as the day-to-day logistics of getting pupils to schools. Issues of concern for managers within schools and colleges include allocating the budgets, scheduling lessons and the assignment of students to courses. This survey provides an overview of the diverse problems faced by government, managers and consumers of education, and the OR techniques which have typically been applied in an effort to improve operations and provide solutions

Agent-based simulation framework for the taxi sector modeling

Taxi services account for a significant part of the daily trips in most cities around the world. These services are regulated by a central authority, which usually monitors the performance of the taxi services provision and defines the policies applied to the taxi sector. In order to support policy makers, fleet managers and individual taxi drivers, there is a need for developing models to understand the behavior of these markets. Most of the models developed for analyzing the taxi market are based on econometric measurements and do not account for the spatial distribution of both taxi demand and supply. Only few simulation models are able to better understand the operational characteristics of the taxi market. This paper presents a framework for the development of agent based taxi simulation models. It is aimed at assessing policy makers, taxi fleet managers and individual drivers in the definition of the optimum operation mode and the number of vehicles.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Ajalis-ruumiliste andmete kogumine on hoogustunud erinevates rakendustes ja seadmetes. Globaalne positsiooneerimise süsteem (GPS) on kõige populaarsem viis asukoha teave saamiseks. Kaardipunktide vastavusse seadmine on konseptsioon, mis püüab GPS andmeid trajektooris viia vastavusse reaalse teedevõrguga. GPS andmete suurim probleem tuleneb andmete mõõtmis-ja kogumisvigadest ja nende parandamine on suur väljakutse. Käesoleva lõputöö eesmärk on arendada andmete töötlusvoo ja visualiseerimise raamistik muutmaks GPS punktid loogilisteks trajektoorideks ja vigaste GPS punktide asukohtade parandamiseks. Selle eesmärgi saavutamiseks tutvustatakse uut lähenemist trajektooride mustrite leidmiseks. The functionality of gathering spatio-temporal data has seen increasing usage in various applications and devices. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite navigation system which is mostly used for gathering location information. Map-matching is the procedure of matching trajectories from a sequence of raw GPS data points to the appropriate road networks. GPS data errors are one of the biggest problems and correcting them is a big challenge. The main goal of this thesis work is to build a data pipeline and visualization framework for turning raw GPS data to trajectories and correcting erroneous GPS points by new map-matching approach. For achieving the goal a new approach for trajectory pattern mining is introduced

Routing of hazardous material carrying vehicles

A number of accidents in the last two decades have increased public awareness of potential risks associated with hazardous material transport. Consequently, the safety management of this activity has become an issue of major importance. This paper presents a methodology and case study of Rourkela, which is to contribute a national action plan for hazardous material transport for Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) .The main objective, is to develop a planning system for hazardous material transport. The planning system considers both economic and risk values. Risk assessment for the route system is discussed. Firstly, hazardous material identification and classification is studied and international norms for accidents of hazardous material carrying vehicle and their influence on routing decision are briefly described. . The consequences of the hazardous material accident are explosion, heat radiation, and toxicity. Secondly, intelligence phase is mainly used to understand the problem. GIS played an important role in risk assessment. The elements at risk include population, buildings and economic activitiesThirdly, Buffer analysis is done to identify the potentially hazardous road locations and necessary preventive measures are suggested for this. Accident rate is calculated from Crossthwaite, Fitzpatrick, TNO, and Gaussian equation considering the preventive measures for hazardous material carrying vehicles. The new accident rate calculated by using the above mentioned formula was compared with the previous 7 years data sets obtained from different police stations. The results obtained from the present method are promising. The buffer analysis will be helpful for traffic planners to take decisions correctly in case of any future research in that area

CERN Storage Systems for Large-Scale Wireless

The project aims at evaluating the use of CERN computing infrastructure for next generation sensor networks data analysis. The proposed system allows the simulation of a large-scale sensor array for traffic analysis, streaming data to CERN storage systems in an efficient way. The data are made available for offline and quasi-online analysis, enabling both long term planning and fast reaction on the environment
