How Software Promotes the Integration of Sustainability in Business Process Management
Business research and practice increasingly focus on integrating sustainability in organizations. To contribute to rising challenges related to the society and the environment, sustainability-driven concepts (e.g., environmental friendly)have to be implemented in the daily business routines, and thus, need to be considered during the design of business processes in any organization. In this study, we conceptualize the field of Green Business Process Management (BPM)and use the derived concepts to classify supporting modelling tools and concrete software features. While our study indicates a lack of realization of the ecological and social sustainability in particular and a gap in supporting users during the redesign phase, there are software features that can potentially serve as a starting point to further incorporate sustainability in the design, implementation, and controlling of business processes
High-temperature mechanical properties of cast AlâSiâCuâMg alloy by combined additions of cerium and zirconium
The main aim of this work is to investigate the effects of combinative Ce and Zr additions (0.3 wt% Ce+0.16 wt% Zr; 0.3 wt% Ce+0.27 wt% Zr and 0.3 wt% Ce+0.36 wt% Zr) on the microstructure and mechanical properties in cast AlâSiâCuâMgalloy. The microstructures features were investigated by optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and hardness measurements. The microstructural analysis has shown that the increase of Ce and Zr contents increases the volume fraction of intermetallics formed during the solidification leading to grain refinement and changes in silicon morphology of the as-cast microstructure. The intermetallics formed do not dissolve during the solution heating treatment (T6). The mechanical behavior at room and high temperatures (175, 210, 245 and 275 °C) was determined from uniaxial tensile tests. The high thermal stability of AlâSiâ CuâLaâCe and AlâSiâZrâTiâMgphases found in microstructure, in particular for the alloy containing 0.3 wt% Ce+0.27 wt% Zr, is responsible for the increase to 6.7% and 5.1% the ultimate strength at 210 °Cand 275 °Crespectively, compared with the standard alloy
Identification and validation of the mode of action of the chalcone anti-mycobacterial compounds
Objectives The search for new TB drugs has become one of the great challenges for modern medicinal chemistry. An improvement in the outcomes of TB chemotherapy can be achieved by the development of new, shorter, cheap, safe and effective anti-TB regimens. Methods Chalcones (1a-1o) were synthesized and evaluated for their antimycobacterial activity against Mycobacterium bovis BCG using growth inhibition assays. Compound 1a was selected as a âhitâ compound. The mode of action of compound 1a, was identified by mycolic acid methyl esters (MAMEs) and fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) analysis using thin layer chromatography. Dose dependent experiments were conducted by over-expressing components of FAS-II in M. bovis BCG to confirm the target. Ligand binding using intrinsic tryptophan assay and molecular docking were used to further validate the target. Results MAMEs and FAMEs analysis showed dose-dependent reduction of MAMEs with the overall abundance of FAMEs suggesting that compound 1a targets mycolic acid biosynthesis. Direct binding of 1a to InhA was observed using an intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence binding assay, and a 2-fold IC50 shift was observed with an InhA overexpressing strain confirming InhA as the cellular target. Conclusion The chalcone 1a exhibits potent antimycobacterial activity, displays a good safety profile and is a direct inhibitor of InhA, a key component in mycolic acid synthesis, validating this series for further anti-TB drug development
Calibration of ionic and cellular cardiac electrophysiology models
© 2020 The Authors. WIREs Systems Biology and Medicine published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cardiac electrophysiology models are among the most mature and well-studied mathematical models of biological systems. This maturity is bringing new challenges as models are being used increasingly to make quantitative rather than qualitative predictions. As such, calibrating the parameters within ion current and action potential (AP) models to experimental data sets is a crucial step in constructing a predictive model. This review highlights some of the fundamental concepts in cardiac model calibration and is intended to be readily understood by computational and mathematical modelers working in other fields of biology. We discuss the classic and latest approaches to calibration in the electrophysiology field, at both the ion channel and cellular AP scales. We end with a discussion of the many challenges that work to date has raised and the need for reproducible descriptions of the calibration process to enable models to be recalibrated to new data sets and built upon for new studies.
A productive process to be competitive requires the union of quality and productivity. Furthermore, the increased efficiency of processes encounters the current concern with the environmental impacts of production activities, particularly with regard to fossil fuels consumption and emissions. The main objective of this study was to investigate the possibility of increasing the productivity of a reheating furnace from 42 to 45 tons per hour of AISI/SAE 52100 steel billets. For this purpose, numerical simulations of reheating cycles were performed using a computer application. Initially a literature review on the subject was performed, followed by a practical work that consisted of a instrumentation procedure in a AISI / SAE 52100 billet to obtain real data from reheating process. This data was used to validate the numerical simulation and, finally, two different reheating times relating to a production of 42 and 45 tons per hour were simulated. Considering the thermal profile obtained from the simulations, it is likely that the furnace is within its productivity limits. Reductions in the reheat time, thus increasing the production rate, are likely to compromise the quality of the final product
