    Get PDF
A fragmentation of the media market, and major changes in TV viewing patterns are a reality that today´s media companies are working with. The Finnish public service broad-casting company Yle, has in addition to the given competition with the commercial media companies, also a statutory responsibility to shoulder, and face major challenges in today´s digital media landscape. A central question in this thesis is how to develop program ideas into concepts that fit within the framework of public service. The methods are based on Yle´s Norwegian counterpart, NRK´s methods for program development. NRK´s de-velopment manager, Ole Hedemann, have developed disciplined methods for program development, and Svenska Yle have begun to use these methods with some modifica-tions. Before I begin to describe Yle´s way of producing public service programs, I will clarify the meaning of public service in Finland. In this Theseus I will through empirical case studies, and with support of relevant literature and extracts from my internship diary describe the methods that Svenska Yle use to develop program ideas to public service programs. Through a television series that was developed during my internship at Svenska Yle´s department, Fakta och fiktion, I will describe the chain from idea to Concept

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to examine project management and its share in the production of a music album within the Finnish music industry. This thesis is based on a case study and surveys how project management can be used and utilized in the case of the album recording. In the first part of the study the structure of the music industry will be described briefly to the readers and also how the digitalization has changed the course of the music industry. Moreover, we will go through what opportunities and challenges the 21th century has brought along. After that the basics of marketing and means of competition will be opened up in details. The product term will be defined and explained how e.g. the availability of the product (in this case - the album), price and marketing influences the sales of the album. The theory part will define the term project management and review the steps of the project work. The approach of project management will be discussed closer. For instance how the project is started and what needs to be take in to account in the project work. This study investigates the project management of a Finnish rap artist and goes all the steps through to the album recording. Focus is put more on the project management of the album recording, therefore things such as project framework, scheduling and resources were way more important than recruitment and motivation of personnel. They were left out on purpose. The outcome of the study is that a well-planned and managed project helps to stay in schedule and is it an excellent tool for handling the music album recording

The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) sensor at the particle accelerator called the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the European Organizaion for Nuclear Research (CERN) will produce large amounts of data that will require computing resources all over Europe for analysis. In order to facilitate the distribution of data a distributed network called a grid was developed. The Helsinki Institute for Physics (HIP) has pledged to actively participate in this project by supplying computing resources. The computational resources mainly consist of computing elements (CE) and storage elements (SE). To make the resources available, a plug-in was programmed to enable the CMS Remote Analysis Builder (CRAB) to use the Advanced Resource Connector (ARC) Grid Middleware for submitting jobs to these computational resources. This thesis describes the plug-in as well as the grid components which are relevant to implementation of the plug-in

The Finnish state administration has recently undergone a wave of reformstowards decentralized decision-making and increased flexibility in organizing work.Traditional bureaucracy, however, has its virtues. Based on a survey and qualitativeinterview material, the results presented in this paper indicate that many characteristicsof bureaucracy, such as well-defined work roles and hierarchical control, facilitate trustamong employees. In contrast, the current post-bureaucratic model of organizing workmay increase insecurity and decrease trust

Exploring the intersections: Researchers and communication professionals' perspectives on the organizational role of science communication

    Get PDF
Purpose: This paper reports on research exploring the intersections between researchers and communication professionals' perspectives on the objectives, funders and organizational influences on their science communication practices. Design/methodology/approach: Examining one context, the inter-organizational BCDC Energy Research project based at five different research organizations in Finland, this paper presents data from semi-structured interviews with 17 researchers and 15 communication professionals. Findings: The results suggest that performance-based funding policies that drive the proliferation of large-scale research projects can create challenges. In particular, a challenge arises in generating a shared sense of identity and purpose amongst researchers and communication professionals. This may have unintended negative impacts on the quality and cohesiveness of the science communication which occurs. Research limitations/implications: The study was exploratory in nature and focuses on one organizational and institutional environment. Further research with a wider number of projects, as well as funders, would be conducive to a greater understanding of the issues involved. Practical implications: On a practical level, this research suggests that the creation of clearer communications awareness and guidance may be helpful in some large-scale projects, particularly involving broad numbers of organizations, individual researchers and funders. Originality/value: This is one of the first studies examining the perspectives of both researchers and communication professionals working over one project, drawing together a range of different institutional and disciplinary perspectives. The results highlight the importance of the influences of funding on science communication aims, assumptions, cultures and structures. The article articulates the need for further research in this area

Ray-Optics Simulations of Outdoor-to-Indoor Multipath Channels at 4 and 14 GHz

Radio wave propagation simulations based on the ray-optical approximation have been widely adopted in coverage analysis for a range of situations, including the outdoor-to-indoor (O2I) scenario. In this work we present O2I ray-tracer simulations utilizing a complete building floor plan in the form of a point cloud. The ray-tracing simulation results are compared to measured channels at 4 and 14 GHz in terms of large scale parameters, namely path loss, delay spread and angular spread. In this work we address the importance of 1) interior walls and propagation paths originating therein, and 2) site-specific knowledge of window structure in accurately reproducing the O2I channel, particularly the presence of a thin insulating metal film on the windows. The best agreement between measurements and simulations was observed for the most detailed simulation. For both frequencies a mean error of less than 1.5 dB is reached for path loss, and a relative error of less than 10% for delay and angular spreads. Not including the metal film in simulations increases error of estimated building entry loss considerably, whereas absence of interior walls is detrimental to reproduction of large scale parameters

Managerial Perspective on Open Source Collaboration and Networked Innovation

    Get PDF
This study explores the managerial perspectives towards open source software and networked innovation. We analysed six software companies who use open source software as a significant part of their product or service offering. The study found notable differences in managerial attitudes, expected benefits and key challenges related to open source software and its role in innovative activities. While all companies were using same pieces of software with open source communities, there were different levels of engagement in the development of the software and information flows between companies and communities. A deeper level of involvement enables the exchange of more than just the code: like ideas, influences, opinions and even innovations or parts of them. The differences in managerial views on open source and networked innovation may be explained by industry domains, value chain position and leadership styl

Virtual Decomposition Control of a Hydraulic Manipulator

    Get PDF
The controller design and modelling of hydraulically driven robots is a challenging task. This comes inter alia due to inherent nonlinear dynamics associated with hydraulic actuators, highly nonlinear characteristic of the robot dynamics and various uncertainties and disturbances of mathematical models. In this master’s thesis a new control theory, namely Virtual Decomposition Control (VDC), is studied. The VDC approach is developed especially for precision control of complex robots. In VDC approach the robotic system to be controlled is first virtually decomposed into subsystems. Then, the subsystems dynamics based control can be applied, to make each subsystem qualified to be virtually stable. Finally, the virtual stability of every subsystem results in the stability and convergence of entire robot. An effectiveness of this approach comes from the fact that no matter how complicated a robotic system is the dynamics of the subsystems remain relatively simple with fixed dynamic structures invariant to target systems. The purpose of this thesis was to study and implement VDC into hydraulic 2-DOF manipulator actuated with hydraulic cylinders. The parameter adaptation for uncertain parameters was not studied in scope of this thesis. The objective of this thesis was also test performance of VDC-controller in practice and compare achieved results to corresponding PID-controller results. The theory of VDC approach was successfully applied into studied manipulator and the L_2 and L_∞ stability of subsystems were mathematically guaranteed leading to stability of entire system. In experimental measurements certain Cartesian motion trajectory was driven with both VDC- and PID-controller. With VDC- controller roughly 7 times better piston position tracking performance was achieved for first cylinder and about 4.4 times better performance for second cylinder was achieved. Moreover, the very same Cartesian motion trajectory was driven with twice faster and half slower execution times. The stability of PID-controller was lost in both of these cases, whereas VDC-controller managed to drive these trajectories without problems
