Positive Energy Wormholes Made from Normal Charges

In this article we look at the class of positive-energy density wormholes introduced by Eiroa and Simeone, and ask the question "How close can we come to building this wormhole with normal, electrically charged matter?" Using a series expansion, we determine that the stress-energy tensor of the metric can be made arbitrarily close to that of a charged line-source by taking the exponent of the radial coordinate to be sufficiently small. We also find terms in the expansion which resemble QED radiative corrections to the Coulomb field of an electron.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur

Classical Electron Model with QED Corrections

In this article we build a metric for a classical general relativistic electron model with QED corrections. We calculate the stress-energy tensor for the radiative corrections to the Coulomb potential in both the near-field and far-field approximations. We solve the three field equations in both cases by using a perturbative expansion to first order in alpha (the fine-structure constant) while insisting that the usual (+, +, -, -) structure of the stress-energy tensor is maintained. The resulting metric models a (non-spinning) electron with a Coulomb potential with QED corrections, and maintains masslessness of the photon to self-consistent order. The near-field solution resembles the metric of a global monopole.Comment: 6 pages, comments welcom

Electrocution of raptors at power lines in Central Kazakhstan

    Get PDF
Along three transects of medium voltage power lines in the steppe of Central Kazakhstan, surveys for bird casualties were carried out in summer 2006 in order to estimate the quantitative and qualitative impact of power lines on bird mortality in this area. In total, 409 dead birds of 34 different species were found. Raptors represented 44 % of the total (179 individuals, 10 species). Most of them died due to electrocution. The proportion of raptors strongly varied between early and late summer, the increase in August suggests that especially young birds are prone to electrocution. The density of raptor casualties varied from 0.1 to 7.6 birds per line km and month. Adverse effects of power lines on bird life could be avoided by changing the pole construction (use of suspended insulators) or protective measures (e. g. caps).Zur Bestimmung des qualitativen und quantitativen Ausmaßes des Stromtodes von Vögeln in Zentralkasachstan wurden im Sommer 2006 TransektzĂ€hlungen entlang von drei Mittelspannungsleitungen in dieser Region durchgefĂŒhrt.

Unusual spin-wave population in nickel after femtosecond laser pulse excitation

The spin-wave relaxation mechanisms after intense laser excitation in ferromagnetic nickel films are investigated with all-optical pump-probe experiments. Uniform precession (Kittel mode), Damon-Eshbach surface modes and perpendicular standing spin waves can be identified by their dispersion f(H). However, different to other ferromagnets f(H) deviates from the expected behavior. Namely, a mode discontinuity is observed, that can be attributed to a non-linear process. Above a critical field the power spectrum reveals a redistribution of the energy within the spin-wave spectrum populated.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
