Multicriteria decision-making approaches are receiving more and more attention with the increase of expectations from decision makers in variety of fields. The growth in applying such approaches has led to identifying their strengths as well as their shortcomings. Passive and active compensability multicriteria analysis (PACMAN) is one of the frequently used approaches which has the capability to consider compensation in describing intercriteria relations in multicriteria decision-making problems. This methodology is well formed and rationally structured in the first two phases, in which the problem is formulated and the decisive indices are obtained. However, it has some shortcomings in the idea of concluding the process of solution in its last phase. In the current study, we review the methodology, discuss its possible shortcomings, and propose an approach based on the combination of PACMAN and linear programming technique for multidimensional analysis of preference (LINMAP). The proposed approach which is taken to evaluate the PACMAN and LINMAP methodologies can help researchers and decision makers who seek an accurate perspective to evaluate a multicriteria decision-making methodology.authorsversionpublishe

Fuzzy multi-criteria decision making for carbon dioxide geological storage in Turkey

    Get PDF
The problem of choosing the best location for CO2 storage is a crucial and challenging multi-criteria decision problem for some companies. This study compares the performance of three fuzzy-based multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methods, including Fuzzy TOPSIS, Fuzzy ELECTRE I and Fuzzy VIKOR for solving the carbon dioxide geological storage location selection problem in Turkey. The results show that MCDM approach is a useful tool for decision makers in the selection of potential sites for CO2 geological storage

A self‐configured link adaptation for green LTE downlink transmission

Green deployment for cellular eNodeBs has been proposed recently to save power and reduce the huge amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted by traditional power‐hungry base stations. Green eNodeBs should also be subjected to restrictions on high data rate and quality of service (QoS), which both entail a high level of power consumption. In this regard, this paper addresses the trade‐off between energy efficiency (EE) and spectral efficiency (SE) in both traditional and green long‐term evolution eNodeBs without sacrificing the QoS. EE is proved to monotonically increase with SE in traditional macrocells and quasi‐concave in green macrocells. Accordingly, a new mapping between channel quality indicator and modulation and coding scheme is proposed to address EE–SE trade‐off with the use of a multi‐criteria decision‐making technique. Then, a self‐configured link adaptation (SCLA) algorithm is developed to ensure that the priority weights related to EE and SE are adapted according to network load with the use of real‐time cross‐layer optimization. Simulation results show that the proposed SCLA provides a significant gain in EE and 52% reduction of CO2 while maintaining SE close to the optimal value. Current and next‐generation cellular networks require such interactive techniques in order to be self‐optimised without complex modifications

Using fahp-vikor for operation selection in the flexible job-shop scheduling problem: A case study in textile industry

    Get PDF
Scheduling of Flexible Job Shop Systems is a combinatorial problem which has been addressed by several heuristics and meta-heuristics. Nevertheless, the operation selection rules of both methods are limited to an ordered variant wherein priority-dispatching rules are not simultaneously deemed in the reported literature. Therefore, this paper presents the application of dispatching algorithm with operation selection based on Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) and VIKOR methods while considering setup times and transfer batches. Dispatching, FAHP, and VIKOR algorithms are first defined. Second, a multi-criteria decision-making model is designed for operation prioritization. Then, FAHP is applied to calculate the criteria weights and overcome the uncertainty of human judgments. Afterwards, VIKOR is used to select the operation with the highest priority. A case study in the textile industry is shown to validate this approach. The results evidenced, compared to the company solution, a reduction of 61.05% in average delay

Decision aid system founded on nonlinear valuation, dispersion-based weighting and correlative aggregation for wire rope selection in slope stability cable nets

This paper presents a decision aid system to address hierarchically structured decision-making problems based on the determination of the satisfaction provided by a group of alternatives in relation to multiple conflicting subcriteria grouped into criteria. The system combines the action of three new methods related to the following concepts: nonlinear valuation, dispersion-based weighting and correlative aggregation. The first includes five value functions that allow the conversion of the ratings of the alternatives regarding the subcriteria into the satisfaction they produce in a versatile and simple manner through the Beta Cumulative Distribution Function. The use of measures of dispersion to weight the subcriteria by giving more importance to those factors that can make a difference due to their heterogeneity is revised to validate it when the values are not normally distributed. Dependencies between subcriteria are taken into account through the determination of their correlation coefficients, whose incorporation adjusts the results provided by the system to favour those alternatives having a balanced behaviour with respect to conflicting aspects. The overall satisfaction provided by each alternative is determined using a prioritisation operator to avoid compensation between criteria when aggregating the subcriteria. The system was tested through a novel field of application such as the selection of wire rope to form slope stability cable nets. The authors wish to express their gratitude to the IP department of INCHALAM S.A., whose collaboration and support made this paper possible

Environmentally Concerned Logistics Operations in Fuzzy Environment: A Literature Survey

    Get PDF
Growing environmental awareness coupled with stricter governmental regulations has fueled the need for integrating sustainability into supply chain and logistics activities. Accordingly, recent studies in the literature have emphasized the significance of environmentally concerned logistics operations (ECLO). Research in the broad area of ECLO encompasses a wide range of topics including sustainable supply chain, green supply chain, closed-loop supply chain, low-carbon logistics, and waste management. In this paper, a comprehensive content analysis and area review is presented. Over 800 papers published between 1994 and 2017 in peer-reviewed journals, proceedings, and book chapters are utilized. These papers are analyzed in consecutive stages after being reviewed under a structural dimension process that addresses the fields of environmentally concerned logistics operations. Following the state-of-the-art review, a detailed analysis of ECLO research with a special emphasis on fuzzy applications is provided. The findings clearly indicate that the fuzzy multi-criteria decision making technique is a frequently used hybrid method, whereas fuzzy sets theory and other fuzzy hybrid techniques identify a gap in the related literature. This paper provides further critical analysis and other research suggestions in order to clarify these gaps and offer additional research perspectives. This information may provide extensive data that will enable future researchers to fill these gaps within this field.https://doi.org/10.3390/logistics101000

While affordability is traditionally assessed in economic terms, this paper tests a new assessment method that draws closer links with sustainability by considering economic, social and environmental criteria that impact on a household's quality of life. The paper presents an empirical application and comparison of six different multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) approaches for the purpose of assessing sustainable housing affordability. The comparative performance of the weighted product model (WPM), the weighted sum model (WSM), the revised AHP, TOPSIS and COPRAS, is investigated. The purpose of the comparative analysis is to determine how different MCDM methods compare when used for a sustainable housing affordability assessment model. 20 Evaluative criteria and 10 alternative are as in Liverpool, England, were considered. The applicability of different MCDM methods for the focused decision problem was investigated. The paper discusses the similarities in MCDM methods, evaluates their robustness and contrasts the resulting rankings
