    Urinary bisphenol A and obesity in adults: results from the Canadian Health Measures Survey

    Introduction Exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) has been shown to affect lipid metabolismand promote weight gain in animal studies. Recent epidemiological studies alsosupport a link between BPA and obesity in human populations, although many werelimited to a single adiposity measure or have not considered potential confounding bydietary factors. The purpose of this study is to examine associations between urinaryBPA and adiposity measures in a nationally representative sample of Canadian adults. Methods We performed analyses using biomonitoring and directly measured anthropometricdata from 4733 adults aged 18 to 79 years in the Canadian Health MeasuresSurvey (2007–2011). We used multinomial and binary logistic regression models to estimateassociations of urinary BPA with body mass index (BMI) categories (overweightvs. under/normal weight; obesity vs. under/normal weight) and elevated waist circumference(males: ≄ 102 cm; females: ≄ 88 cm), respectively, while controlling for potentialconfounders. Linear regression analyses were also performed to assess associationsbetween urinary BPA and continuous BMI and waist circumference measures. Results Urinary BPA was positively associated with BMI-defined obesity, with an oddsratio of 1.54 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.002–2.37) in the highest (vs. lowest) BPAquartile (test for trend, p = .041). Urinary BPA was not associated with elevated waistcircumference defined using standard cut-offs. Additionally, each natural-log unitincrease in urinary BPA concentration was associated with a 0.33 kg/m2 (95% CI: 0.10–0.57) increase in BMI and a 1.00 cm (95% CI: 0.34–1.65) increase in waistcircumference. Conclusion Our study contributes to the growing body of evidence that BPA is positivelyassociated with obesity. Prospective studies with repeated measures are neededto address temporality and improve exposure classification

    More support needed: Evaluating the impact of school e-cigarette prevention and cessation programs on e-cigarette initiation among a sample of Canadian secondary school students

    Given the recent increase in e-cigarette use among adolescents, there is a need to further explore how school programs are associated with e-cigarette initiation. The objective of this quasi-experimental study was to evaluate the impact of multiple school-based e-cigarette prevention and cessation programs on e-cigarette initiation among Canadian adolescents. This study used data from Year 6 (2017/18) and Year 7 (2018/19) of the COMPASS study in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec, Canada. Students in grades 9 to 11 who had never tried e-cigarettes at baseline were included (n = 13,269). Schools (n = 88) reported whether they added programming that addressed e-cigarette or tobacco prevention or cessation. Generalized estimating equations were used to identify how added programs were associated with e-cigarette initiation at follow-up. At one-year follow-up (2018/19), 23% of schools added programs. Our evaluation results suggest that none of the activities taken by schools to prevent or reduce vaping among students significantly prevented vaping onset. In fact, female students at schools that reported adding a theme week had higher odds of e-cigarette initiation (OR 1.68 [95% CI 1.31–2.16]) and male students at schools that reported a cessation program had higher odds of e-cigarette initiation (OR 1.20 [95% CI 1.01–1.44]). These results suggest that schools may not know how to address e-cigarette use and that there can be risks to students if programs are not carefully implemented.     Risk of adverse outcomes among infants of immigrant women according to birth-weight curves tailored to maternal world region of origin

    Background: Infants of immigrant women in Western nations generally have lower birth weights than infants of native-born women. Whether this difference is physiologic or pathological is unclear. We determined whether the use of birth-weight curves tailored to maternal world region of origin would discriminate adverse neonatal and obstetric outcomes more accurately than a single birth-weight curve based on infants of Canadian-born women. Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of in-hospital singleton live births (328 387 to immigrant women, 761 260 to nonimmigrant women) in Ontario between 2002 and 2012 using population health services data linked to the national immigration database. We classified infants as small for gestational age (\u3c 10th percentile) or large for gestational age (≄ 90th percentile) using both Canadian and world region-specific birthweight curves and compared associations with adverse neonatal and obstetric outcomes. Results: Compared with world region-specific birth-weight curves, the Canadian curve classified 20 431 (6.2%) additional newborns of immigrant women as small for gestational age, of whom 15 467 (75.7%) were of East or South Asian descent. The odds of neonatal death were lower among small-for-gestational-age infants of immigrant women than among those of nonimmigrant women based on the Canadian birth-weight curve (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 0.83, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.72-0.95), but higher when small for gestational age was defined by the world region- specific curves (adjusted OR 1.24, 95% CI 1.08- 1.42). Conversely, the odds of some adverse outcomes were lower among large-forgestational- age infants of immigrant women than among those of nonimmigrant women based on world region-specific birth-weight curves, but were similar based on the Canadian curve. Interpretation: World region-specific birthweight curves seemed to be more appropriate than a single Canadian population-based curve for assessing the risk of adverse neonatal and obstetric outcomes among small- and large-for-gestational-age infants born to immigrant women, especially those from the East and South Asian regions

    Altimetry for the future: Building on 25 years of progress

    In 2018 we celebrated 25 years of development of radar altimetry, and the progress achieved by this methodology in the fields of global and coastal oceanography, hydrology, geodesy and cryospheric sciences. Many symbolic major events have celebrated these developments, e.g., in Venice, Italy, the 15th (2006) and 20th (2012) years of progress and more recently, in 2018, in Ponta Delgada, Portugal, 25 Years of Progress in Radar Altimetry. On this latter occasion it was decided to collect contributions of scientists, engineers and managers involved in the worldwide altimetry community to depict the state of altimetry and propose recommendations for the altimetry of the future. This paper summarizes contributions and recommendations that were collected and provides guidance for future mission design, research activities, and sustainable operational radar altimetry data exploitation. Recommendations provided are fundamental for optimizing further scientific and operational advances of oceanographic observations by altimetry, including requirements for spatial and temporal resolution of altimetric measurements, their accuracy and continuity. There are also new challenges and new openings mentioned in the paper that are particularly crucial for observations at higher latitudes, for coastal oceanography, for cryospheric studies and for hydrology. The paper starts with a general introduction followed by a section on Earth System Science including Ocean Dynamics, Sea Level, the Coastal Ocean, Hydrology, the Cryosphere and Polar Oceans and the ‘‘Green” Ocean, extending the frontier from biogeochemistry to marine ecology. Applications are described in a subsequent section, which covers Operational Oceanography, Weather, Hurricane Wave and Wind Forecasting, Climate projection. Instruments’ development and satellite missions’ evolutions are described in a fourth section. A fifth section covers the key observations that altimeters provide and their potential complements, from other Earth observation measurements to in situ data. Section 6 identifies the data and methods and provides some accuracy and resolution requirements for the wet tropospheric correction, the orbit and other geodetic requirements, the Mean Sea Surface, Geoid and Mean Dynamic Topography, Calibration and Validation, data accuracy, data access and handling (including the DUACS system). Section 7 brings a transversal view on scales, integration, artificial intelligence, and capacity building (education and training). Section 8 reviews the programmatic issues followed by a conclusion

    Search for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks in √s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks is presented. Final states containing third-generation quarks and miss- ing transverse momentum are considered. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess of events above the estimated backgrounds is observed. The results are in- terpreted in the framework of simplified models of spin-0 dark-matter mediators. For colour- neutral spin-0 mediators produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a pair of dark-matter particles, mediator masses below 50 GeV are excluded assuming a dark-matter candidate mass of 1 GeV and unitary couplings. For scalar and pseudoscalar mediators produced in association with bottom quarks, the search sets limits on the production cross- section of 300 times the predicted rate for mediators with masses between 10 and 50 GeV and assuming a dark-matter mass of 1 GeV and unitary coupling. Constraints on colour- charged scalar simplified models are also presented. Assuming a dark-matter particle mass of 35 GeV, mediator particles with mass below 1.1 TeV are excluded for couplings yielding a dark-matter relic density consistent with measurements

    Increasing blood pressure and its associated factors in Canadian children and adolescents from the Canadian Health Measures Survey

    BACKGROUND: Canada is facing a childhood obesity epidemic. Elevated blood pressure (BP) is a major complication of obesity. Reports on the impact of excess adiposity on BP in children and adolescents have varied significantly across studies. We evaluated the independent effects of obesity, physical activity, family history of hypertension, and socioeconomic status on BP in a nationally representative sample of children and adolescents. METHODS: We analysed cross-sectional data for 1850 children aged 6 to 17 years who participated in the Canadian Health Measures Survey, Cycle 1, 2007–2009. Systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) were age-, sex-, and height-adjusted to z-scores (SBPZ and DBPZ). Body mass index (BMI) z-scores were calculated based on World Health Organization growth standards. Multivariate linear regression was used to evaluate the independent effects of relevant variables on SBPZ and DBPZ. RESULTS: For most age/sex groups, obesity was positively associated with SBP. Being obese was associated with higher DBP in adolescent boys only. The BP effect of obesity showed earlier in young girls than boys. Obese adolescents were estimated to have an average 7.6 mmHg higher SBP than normal weight adolescents. BMI had the strongest effect on BP among obese children and adolescents. Moderately active adolescent boys had higher SBP (3.9 mmHg) and DBP (4.9 mmHg) than physically active boys. Family history of hypertension showed effects on SBP and DBP in younger girls and adolescent boys. Both family income and parent education demonstrated independent associations with BP in young children. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings demonstrate the early impact of excess adiposity, insufficient physical activity, family history of hypertension, and socioeconomic inequalities on BP. Early interventions to reduce childhood obesity can, among other things, reduce exposure to prolonged BP elevation and the future risk of cardiovascular disease

    A Case-Control Study of Risk Factors for Salivary Gland Cancer in Canada

    Aim. To assess the effect of various lifestyle risk factors on the risk of salivary gland cancer in Canada using data from a population-based case-control study. Methods. Data from a population-based case-control study of 132 incident cases of salivary gland cancer and 3076 population controls were collected through self-administered questionnaire and analysed using unconditional logistic regression. Results. Four or more servings/week of processed meat product was associated with an adjusted odds ratio (OR) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) of 1.62 (1.02–2.58). Nonsignificantly increased ORs were also related to obesity, >7 drinks/week of alcohol consumption, and occupational exposure to radiation. Furthermore, nonsignificantly decreased ORs were found to be associated with high education level (>12 years) (OR=0.65), high consumption of spinach/squash (OR=0.62) and all vegetables/vegetable juices (OR=0.75), and >30 sessions/month of recreational physical activity (OR=0.78). Conclusions. This study suggests positive associations with consumption of processed meat, smoking, obesity, alcohol drinking, and occupational exposure to radiation as well as negative associations with higher education, consumption of spinach/squash, and physical activity, which suggest a role of lifestyle factors in the etiology of salivary gland cancer. However, these findings were based on small number of cases and were nonsignificant. Further larger studies are warranted to confirm our findings

    The Canadian Environmental Quality Index (Can-EQI): Development and calculation of an index to assess spatial variation of environmental quality in Canada’s 30 largest cities

    Background: Multiple characteristics of the urban environment have been shown to influence population health and health-related behaviours, though the distribution and combined effects of these characteristics on health is less understood. A composite measure of multiple environmental conditions would allow for comparisons among different urban areas; however, this measure is not available in Canada. Objectives: To develop an index of environmental quality for Canada’s largest urban areas and to assess the influence of population size on index values. Methods: We conducted a systematic search of potential datasets and consulted with experts to refine and select datasets for inclusion. We identified and selected nine datasets across five domains (outdoor air pollution, natural environments, built environments, radiation, and climate/weather). Datasets were chosen based on known impacts on human health across the life course, complete geographic coverage of the cities of interest, and temporal alignment with the 2016 Canadian census. Each dataset was then summarized into dissemination areas (DAs). The Canadian Environmental Quality Index (Can-EQI) was created by summing decile ranks of each variable based on hypothesized relationships to health outcomes. Results: We selected 30 cities with a population of more than 100,000 people which included 28,026 DAs and captured approximately 55% of the total Canadian population. Can-EQI scores ranged from 21.1 to 88.9 out of 100, and in Canada’s largest cities were 10.2 (95% CI: −10.7, −9.7) points lower than the smallest cities. Mapping the Can-EQI revealed high geographic variability within and between cities. Discussion: Our work demonstrates a valuable methodology for exploring variations in environmental conditions in Canada’s largest urban areas and provides a means for exploring the role of environmental factors in explaining urban health inequalities and disparities. Additionally, the Can-EQI may be of value to municipal planners and decision makers considering the allocation of investments to improve urban conditions
