    Mathematical Model of a Tiny Fluid in Porous Media. Spilled Oil as a Case Study

    A dynamic model for the movement of spilled oil through a porous medium was developed. The equation being non-linear partial differential equation and parabolic forms, was thus solved numerically with the adoption of the Crank Nicholson finite difference scheme. A mathematical algorithm to solve this system of equation was developed and implemented into simulation program. The graph of the concentration against axial distance (height), concentration against radial distance at different time were plotted from simulation results obtained which shows decrease in the concentration of solute (contaminant) through the media

    Effect of Teaching Method, Choice of Discipline and Student-Lecturer Relationship on Academic Performance

    The main aim of this study is to provide new evidence on  factors affecting students’ performance. A sample of 192 students who have taken at least not less than four semesters examinations were considered. Student-Lecturer relationship, examination contents, students mode of study and assimilation, effort and students’ CGPA were the parameters used for this purpose. The result of the findings reveals that choice of disciplines has negative effect on students’ CGPA if unduly influenced by university authority or parents, and that student’s CGPA rises as rapport between student and lecturer gets better. Although we obtained mixed, and sometimes controversial result when effort was compared with performance. Those students who make special effort in their studies but performed below those who do not take their studies seriously gave different reasons for the variation: 46% of female students reported rushed lectures while 29.69% of male reported lack of access to learning facilities such as internet. In order to encourage good performance, we suggest that lecturers should try to maintain good rapport with their students. However, they should ensure that moral hazard is not created in the process.     Total Quality Management Practices and Technology Transfer in Malaysian Public University

    It is widely accepted that the implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM) as a management philosophy has significantly contributed to good management practice in business organization particularly in the manufacturing and service sectors. The applications of that concepts, techniques and tools have been successfully tailored to non-profit service or government-based organization. In the context of higher education institution, it has been seriously debated by the TQM scholars and academicians on the issue of to what extent TQM can be applied and how relevant its practices are to higher education\u27s core business i.e. teaching and research. Despite having sufficient knowledge and research on TQM implementation in the scope of manufacturing practices and administration-related services, it is hard to find a research on TQM, which focuses on the scope of R&D at a university. This gap has to be filled because the management of research is a critical topic for universities worldwide. For developing countries such as Malaysia the need to have good management practice in R&D is even greater. Without effective research management, the task of becoming significant players in the global knowledge market will become harder. Thus, the first part of this paper will discuss the applicability of TQM and propose a theoretical framework or model of TQM to suit the need of R&D context. The constructs for the TQM framework are based on previous empirical studies and the evaluation criteria of world standard criteria such as MBNQA, EFQM, and QMS ISO 9000. The TQM constructs that will be proposed are leadership, strategic planning, student/stakeholder & industry focus, data & information management, staff management, process & system approach, partnership & resource and continuous improvement. The second part of the paper will discuss the performance indicators of R&D activities particularly in the context of public university. The review of International literatures stressed that the performance of R&D activities have to be measured. The current issue related to research performance at university is the level the research output that can be transferred to the stakeholders. Therefore, this study will use technology transfer framework to measure research performance such as publication, patents, royalty and Spin-off Company. Finally, this paper will conceptually develop a model that would show the relationship between the TQM practices in the area of research and the level of technology transfer

    Product structure initialization, the bottleneck of ERP implementation in customer driven environments: a case study

    This study of the implementation of enterprise resource planning (ERP) in a customer driven environment analyzes the critical success factors throughout the initialization phase. The dynamic and stochastic nature of customer driven environments results in a massive workload of product structure configuration tasks related to new arrivals on one hand and a constant updating process on the other. Meanwhile, the development and implementation of an ERP system was studied from the very first step (i.e. the feasibly study for implementing an ERP) to the last step (i.e. testing the outputs of the implemented system) in an office furniture company for three years. The study involved analyzing of the data collected that were from a series of interviews, as well as direct observations and reviewing of the company's documents. Based on the output of the analysis phase, a top-down hierarchical analysis of goals and CSFs were carried out according to the CSF analysis method. Three top level objectives included reducing project failure risk, project cost, and project time. Analysing the primary results of the study (i.e. activity model, data flow diagram DFD of different levels, system problems and potential solutions descriptions, etc.) revealed that the critical phase of the implementation project would be product structure initialization and this should be taken into consideration as the bottleneck of production planning in customer driven environment, which dramatically reduced the ERP efficiency in this kind of environment. Moreover, initializing issues of the same process is the main obstacle to the success of the ERP implementation, as it considerably raises the project failure risk and cost. Therefore, the simplification, facilitation, and automation of the PSCM process, which lead to acceleration of this process, are the most significant success factors for the ERP implementation projects in customer driven environment

    Nutritional Evaluation of Honey Bee Slum gum Meal as Replacement for Maize in the Feed of Growing Rabbits

    As part of the efforts in developing alternative feed ingredients for feeding rabbits a feeding trial was conducted to investigate the nutritional potential of Honey Bee slum gum meal (HBSM) on the performance characteristics of growing rabbit. Thirty (30) growing rabbit of 7 weeks of age were weight-balanced and divided into three (3) dietary treatment groups of 10 rabbit each in a completely randomized designed experiment. Diet 1 had 0% inclusion of HBSM while 25 and 50% maize in diets 2 and 3 were replaced by HBSM respectively. Rabbits received feed and water ad libitum during the 12 weeks of the experiment. The final weights decrease linearly (P<0.05) as the level of inclusion increases (1663.20g 1630.00g and 1458.40g for rabbits on treatments 1, 2 and 3 respectively). Rabbit on diets 1 and 2 had higher (P<0.05) daily weight gains (13.59g and 13.15 respectively) compared with rabbits on diet 3 (11.1g). The digestibility of nutrients were not affected (P>0.05) by the dietary treatments. The values obtained for final weight, carcass weight, abdominal fat, kidney, liver and lungs were significantly (P<0.05) affected by dietary treatment. HBSM can be used as an alternative for substituting maize in growing rabbits diets up of 25% beyond which depression in performance is observed.     OPTIMIZATION OF BIODIESEL PRODUCTION FROM WASTE FRYING OIL OVER ALUMINA SUPPORTED CHICKEN EGGSHELL CATALYST USING EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN TOOL

    An optimization of the biodiesel production from a waste frying oil via a heterogeneous transesterification was studied. This present study is also aimed at investigating the catalytic behaviour of the alumina supported eggshell (ASE) for the synthesis of biodiesel. A synthesized ASE catalyst, at various mixing ratios of alumina to eggshell, was investigated and exhibited a better activity for the reaction when the eggshell and alumina were mixed via incipient wetness impregnation in 2 : 1 proportion on a mass basis and calcined at 900 °C for 4 h. The as-synthesized catalyst was characterized by basicity, BET, SEM, EDX, and FTIR. The 2k factorial experimental design was employed for an optimization of process variables, which include catalyst loading, reaction time, methanol/oil molar ratio and reaction temperature and their effects on the biodiesel yield were studied. The optimization results showed that the reaction time has the highest percentage contribution of 40.139% while the catalyst loading contributes the least to the biodiesel production, as low as 1.233 %. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed a high correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.9492) and the interaction between the reaction time and reaction temperature contributes significantly to the biodiesel production process with percentage contribution of 14.001 %, compared to other interaction terms. The biodiesel yield of 77.56% was obtained under the optimized factor combination of 4.0 wt.% catalyst loading, 120 min reaction time, 12 : 1 methanol/oil molar ratio and reaction temperature of 65 °C. The reusability study showed that the ASE catalyst could be reused for up to four cycles and the biodiesel produced under optimum conditions conformed to the ASTM standard

    Validating the ISO 9000 Construct of Measurement Instrument Through Application of RASCH Model

    There are numerous researches conducted on the issues related to ISO 9001 quality management system. Among the issue is the impact of the ISO 9001 quality management system implementation on the performance of the organization. However the findings from the research appeared as inconclusive. Few literature suggest that the inconclusive result may due to the level of ISO 9000 implementation therefore further research is required. Generally the data collected for these types of researches are through mailed questionnaires and analyzed it using SPSS and SEM. In line with that this study also developed questionnaires correspond to a 5 point Likert to assess the implementation of ISO 9000 in the organization. As a result 231 items are identified within five dimensions. The five dimensions are derived from ISO 9001 and ISO 9004 quality management standards requirement and guidelines. Among the dimensions are management responsibility, resource management, product realization, measurement improvement and innovation and organizational performance. The questionnaires are sent to 78 automotive based companies located in the Northern region of Peninsular Malaysia. 19 questionnaires were returned and used as pilot test to validate and calibrate the instrument. The responds from the organization are tabulated and run in WinSteps software for the purpose of validating and calibrating the instrument by implementing the Rasch ‘quality control' and reduction of items. Not all the outfit items are removed from the instruments, Rasch Model did provide room for the researcher to make decision either to remove or not those outfit items. In this study those outfit items need to be corrected in order to ensure that the instrument is reliable and fit to measure the performance of the organization. As a result 68 items are removed from the questionnaires

    Development and Characterization of a Composite Anthill chicken Eggshell Catalyst for Biodiesel Production from Waste Frying Oil

    The primary aim of this research is to synthesis composite anthill-chicken eggshell catalyst, which is characterized and employed for the synthesis of biodiesel from waste frying oil. The as-synthesized catalyst was characterized using various characterization techniques, such as Xray fluorescence (XRF), Fourier transform infrared radiation (FTIR), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Basicity. The influence of different reaction parameters on the catalytic reaction, reaction time, catalyst loading and reaction temperature in the range of 50–75°C were studied at fixed methanol/oil ratio of 6:1. The experimental data obtained showed that at reaction time of 2 h, catalyst loading of 5 wt% and reaction temperature of 60°C, the biodiesel yield was 70%. The synthesized catalyst was found to convert low-grade oil into biodiesel via a single-step transesterification process, and its activity has the potential for improvement
