Exceptional Flux Compactifications
We consider type II (non-)geometric flux backgrounds in the absence of brane
sources, and construct their explicit embedding into maximal gauged D=4
supergravity. This enables one to investigate the critical points, mass spectra
and gauge groups of such backgrounds. We focus on a class of type IIA geometric
vacua and find a novel, non-supersymmetric and stable AdS vacuum in maximal
supergravity with a non-semisimple gauge group. Our construction relies on a
non-trivial mapping between SL(2) x SO(6,6) fluxes, SU(8) mass spectra and

Postcopulatory sexual selection
The female reproductive tract is where competition between the sperm of different males takes place, aided and abetted by the female herself. Intense postcopulatory sexual selection fosters inter-sexual conflict and drives rapid evolutionary change to generate a startling diversity of morphological, behavioural and physiological adaptations. We identify three main issues that should be resolved to advance our understanding of postcopulatory sexual selection. We need to determine the genetic basis of different male fertility traits and female traits that mediate sperm selection; identify the genes or genomic regions that control these traits; and establish the coevolutionary trajectory of sexes

Racism is a shapeshifter that adapts to silence minoritised ethnic voices, unless it is continually made visible. Race research therefore needs continuous development to challenge pervasive racisms within schools, higher education and government policy. Room temperature mid-IR single photon spectral imaging
Spectral imaging and detection of mid-infrared (mid-IR) wavelengths are
emerging as an enabling technology of great technical and scientific interest;
primarily because important chemical compounds display unique and strong mid-IR
spectral fingerprints revealing valuable chemical information. While modern
Quantum cascade lasers have evolved as ideal coherent mid-IR excitation
sources, simple, low noise, room temperature detectors and imaging systems
still lag behind. We address this need presenting a novel, field-deployable,
upconversion system for sensitive, 2-D, mid-IR spectral imaging. Measured room
temperature dark noise is 0.2 photons/spatial element/second, which is a
billion times below the dark noise level of cryogenically cooled InSb cameras.
Single photon imaging and up to 200 x 100 spatial elements resolution is
obtained reaching record high continuous wave quantum efficiency of about 20 %
for polarized incoherent light at 3 \mum. The proposed method is relevant for
existing and new mid-IR applications like gas analysis and medical diagnostics
Metaphors in Nanomedicine: The Case of Targeted Drug Delivery
International audienceThe promises of nanotechnology have been framed by a variety of metaphors, that not only channel the attention of the public, orient the questions asked by researchers, and convey epistemic choices closely linked to ethical preferences. In particular, the image of the 'therapeutic missile' commonly used to present targeted drug delivery devices emphasizes precision, control, surveillance and efficiency. Such values are highly praised in the current context of crisis of pharmaceutical innovation where military metaphors foster a general mobilization of resources from multiple fields of cutting-edge research. The missile metaphor, reminiscent of Paul Ehrlich's 'magic bullet', has framed the problem in simple terms: how to deliver the right dose in the right place at the right moment? Chemists, physicists and engineers who design multi-functional devices operating in vitro can think in such terms, as long as the devices are not actually operating through the messy environment of the body. A close look at what has been done and what remains to be done suggests that the metaphor of the "therapeutic missile" is neither sufficient, nor even necessary. Recent developments in nanomedicine suggest that therapeutic efficacy cannot be obtained without negotiating with the biological milieu and taking advantage of what it affords. An 'oïkological' approach seems more appropriate, more heuristic and more promising than the popular missile. It is based on the view of organism as an oikos that has to be carefully managed. The dispositions of nanocapsules have to be coupled with the affordances of the environment. As it requires dealing with nanoparticles as relational entities (defined by their potential for interactions) rather than as stable substances (defined by intrinsic properties) this metaphor eventually might well change research priorities in nanotechnology in general
Outer membrane protein folding from an energy landscape perspective
The cell envelope is essential for the survival of Gram-negative bacteria. This specialised membrane is densely packed with outer membrane proteins (OMPs), which perform a variety of functions. How OMPs fold into this crowded environment remains an open question. Here, we review current knowledge about OFMP folding mechanisms in vitro and discuss how the need to fold to a stable native state has shaped their folding energy landscapes. We also highlight the role of chaperones and the β-barrel assembly machinery (BAM) in assisting OMP folding in vivo and discuss proposed mechanisms by which this fascinating machinery may catalyse OMP folding
'Our role is to listen more than entertain': A qualitative study of techniques used by Laughter Care Specialists with people who have dementia in long-term care.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to describe the techniques that Laughter Care Specialists (LCSs) use to promote engagement of people living with dementia in long-term care. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with LCSs (n = 8) and analysed inductively using thematic analysis. RESULTS: The overarching theme was that techniques used to promote engagement reflected ways of valuing personhood. Sub-themes reflect the distillation of techniques according to ways LCSs approach and connect with people and ways that they then engage. When willingness to interact is indicated, LCSs assess environments to individualise their approach. Ways of engaging include creating opportunities to contribute, identity appreciation, reminiscence, enacting generational norms, presence and play. Engagement techniques were described as supporting identity and personhood through techniques that are individualised, supportive, empathetic and gentle. CONCLUSIONS: Techniques reflect person-centred, strengths-based approaches that attempt to meet psychosocial needs of persons living with dementia and highlight ways of valuing people living in long-term care
"You're the only thing he comes out [of his room] for": A qualitative study of engagement between Laughter Care Specialists and families of people with dementia in long-term care.
OBJECTIVES: Family involvement in the lives of people who have dementia and live in long-term care is important, but family members may face challenges communicating and connecting with their loved one as dementia progresses. A type of therapeutic humor (Laughter Care) delivered by trained specialists aims to engage people with dementia who reside in long-term care through creative play and laughter. This study aimed to explore the perceptions of Laughter Care Specialists (LCSs) regarding families' engagement with the program. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with LCSs (n = 8) and analyzed inductively using thematic analysis. RESULTS: Family members were reported to initially have varied degrees of openness toward Laughter Care, but often become more accepting after observing positive engagement with the person with dementia. Family members were perceived to benefit from the program through witnessing the person with dementia enjoy joyous and light interactions, learn new ways of communicating and connecting with the person with dementia, and engage in positive interactions at end of life. SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS: Laughter Care may provide family members with novel ways of communicating and connecting with people who have dementia at end of life as well as comfort into bereavement
Investigating International Time Trends in the Incidence and Prevalence of Atopic Eczema 1990-2010: A Systematic Review of Epidemiological Studies
The prevalence of atopic eczema has been found to have increased greatly in some parts of the world. Building on a systematic review of global disease trends in asthma, our objective was to study trends in incidence and prevalence of atopic eczema. Disease trends are important for health service planning and for generating hypotheses regarding the aetiology of chronic disorders. We conducted a systematic search for high quality reports of cohort, repeated cross-sectional and routine healthcare database-based studies in seven electronic databases. Studies were required to report on at least two measures of the incidence and/or prevalence of atopic eczema between 1990 and 2010 and needed to use comparable methods at all assessment points. We retrieved 2,464 citations, from which we included 69 reports. Assessing global trends was complicated by the use of a range of outcome measures across studies and possible changes in diagnostic criteria over time. Notwithstanding these difficulties, there was evidence suggesting that the prevalence of atopic eczema was increasing in Africa, eastern Asia, western Europe and parts of northern Europe (i.e. the UK). No clear trends were identified in other regions. There was inadequate study coverage worldwide, particularly for repeated measures of atopic eczema incidence. Further epidemiological work is needed to investigate trends in what is now one of the most common long-term disorders globally. A range of relevant measures of incidence and prevalence, careful use of definitions and description of diagnostic criteria, improved study design, more comprehensive reporting and appropriate interpretation of these data are all essential to ensure that this important field of epidemiological enquiry progresses in a scientifically robust manner
Multi-messenger observations of a binary neutron star merger
On 2017 August 17 a binary neutron star coalescence candidate (later designated GW170817) with merger time 12:41:04 UTC was observed through gravitational waves by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. The Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor independently detected a gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) with a time delay of ~1.7 s with respect to the merger time. From the gravitational-wave signal, the source was initially localized to a sky region of 31 deg2 at a luminosity distance of 40+8-8 Mpc and with component masses consistent with neutron stars. The component masses were later measured to be in the range 0.86 to 2.26 Mo. An extensive observing campaign was launched across the electromagnetic spectrum leading to the discovery of a bright optical transient (SSS17a, now with the IAU identification of AT 2017gfo) in NGC 4993 (at ~40 Mpc) less than 11 hours after the merger by the One- Meter, Two Hemisphere (1M2H) team using the 1 m Swope Telescope. The optical transient was independently detected by multiple teams within an hour. Subsequent observations targeted the object and its environment. Early ultraviolet observations revealed a blue transient that faded within 48 hours. Optical and infrared observations showed a redward evolution over ~10 days. Following early non-detections, X-ray and radio emission were discovered at the transient’s position ~9 and ~16 days, respectively, after the merger. Both the X-ray and radio emission likely arise from a physical process that is distinct from the one that generates the UV/optical/near-infrared emission. No ultra-high-energy gamma-rays and no neutrino candidates consistent with the source were found in follow-up searches. These observations support the hypothesis that GW170817 was produced by the merger of two neutron stars in NGC4993 followed by a short gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) and a kilonova/macronova powered by the radioactive decay of r-process nuclei synthesized in the ejecta
