    Das Römische Missale und die Heilige Schrift Zum Schicksal zweier großen Übersetzungsprojekte des Bartul Kašić (1575—1650)

    O sudbini dva velika jezična projekta Bartula Kašića (1575—1650) R. P. Stephano Krasić, Ordinis Praedicatorum illustrissimo alumno, occasione septuagesimi vitae anni ad terminum perducti, secundis votis prosequens cum bona gratia offert. U ovoj raspravi pokušava se pronaći odgovor na dva pitanja koja su već dugo vremena bila u središtu zanimanja filologâ koji su istraživali djelo Bartula Kašića (1575—1650), pisca prve hrvatske gramatike: a) je li on, kao što sam tvrdi, na hrvatski jezik štokavske stilizacije preveo cijeli latinski Missale Romanum; b) tko je konačno odgovoran da Kašićev prijevod Biblije na Svetome oficiju (Inkviziciji) u Rimu 13. lipnja 1634. nije dobio dozvolu za tisak. Nakon potrage po raznim knjižnicama i arhivima u Rimu i Dubrovniku autor je u Knjižnici Male braće u Dubrovniku jedan anonimni štokavsko- ikavski prijevod misala (Rukopis 247) identificirao kombinacijom kodikoloških i tekstoloških metoda kao prijepis Kašićeva prijevoda toga djela. Za pitanje zabrane Kašićeva prijevoda Biblije koban je bio posjet ad limina apostolorum zagrebačkoga pomoćnoga biskupa Ivana Tomka Mrnavića u svibnju 1634. Tom prilikom on je u ime Crkve zagrebačke osobno predao papi Urbanu VIII. pismo u kojem se traži zabrana tiska. Ovdje se prvi puta objavljuje i komentira to pismo, koje se čuva u Biblioteca Vallicelliana u Rimu (Ms O. 90, ff. 365r-267r).In der hier vorgelegten zweiteiligen Studie versucht der Autor das endgültige Schicksal zweier für die kroatische Literatur- und Sprachgeschichte eminent wichtigen Übersetzungswerke des Jesuiten und Linguisten Bartul Kašić (Bartholomaeus Cassius) aus dem frühen 17. Jh. zu klären. So konnte er hierbei (§ 2) Kašićs handschriftlich erhaltene volksprachliche Übersetzung des Missale Romanum in einer anonymen Abschrift der Minoritenbibliothek zu Dubrovnik (Ms. 247) zum ersten Mal nachweisen und dieses Übersetzungswerk zur Gänze und eindeutig Bartul Kašić attribuieren. Das Lebenswerk desselben Kašić wiederum — die lang ersehnte Drucklegung seiner Bibelübersetzung (NT) in die kroatische Volkssprache — wurde bekanntlich in Rom vereitelt, d.h. am 13. 06. 1634 durch die Kongregation des Heiligen Offiziums (Inquisition) trotz mächtiger Befürwörter endgültig untersagt (das benötigte Imprimatur wurde ihr verweigert). Bisher war allerdings nicht völlig geklärt gewesen, warum damals die Entscheidung so getroffen worden ist. Nun konnte hier (§ 3), ebenfalls erstmalig, die tatsächliche Tischvorlage der entscheidenden Kongregation (Versammlung) der Kardinäle des Heiligen Offiziums, ein Brief des Weihbischofs von Zagreb, Ivan Tomko Mrnavić, an den Papst Urban VIII. gegen die Drucklegung der Bibelübersetzung Kašićs, nach einer in der Biblioteca Vallicelliana zu Rom erhaltenen Abschrift (Ms. O. 90, ff. 365r-267r) integral publiziert und ausführlich kommentiert werden. Diese Abschrift entstammt dem Nachlass eines an der entscheidenden Versammlung der Kardinäle teilnehmenden Experten der Inquisition, des späteren Kardinals und des Präfekten der Bibliotheca Apostolica, Orazio Giustiniani (1580—1649). Somit dürften, dank der intensiven Archivarbeit des Autors dieses Beitrages, nicht nur zwei weiße Flecken der kroatischen Sprach- und Kulturgeschichte getilgt, sondern auch die zwei besonders schmerzhaften persönlichen Wunden des Bartul Kašić (1575—1650), des Autors beider monumentalen, in der von ihm intendierten und richtungsweisenden Ausprägung der heutigen Schriftsprache der Kroaten gehaltenen Werke, wenigstens im Ansatz, sprach-, literatur- und kirchengeschichtlich endlich aufgearbeitet worden sein

    Approaches for advancing scientific understanding of macrosystems

    The emergence of macrosystems ecology (MSE), which focuses on regional- to continental-scale ecological patterns and processes, builds upon a history of long-term and broad-scale studies in ecology. Scientists face the difficulty of integrating the many elements that make up macrosystems, which consist of hierarchical processes at interacting spatial and temporal scales. Researchers must also identify the most relevant scales and variables to be considered, the required data resources, and the appropriate study design to provide the proper inferences. The large volumes of multi-thematic data often associated with macrosystem studies typically require validation, standardization, and assimilation. Finally, analytical approaches need to describe how cross-scale and hierarchical dynamics and interactions relate to macroscale phenomena. Here, we elaborate on some key methodological challenges of MSE research and discuss existing and novel approaches to meet them

    Laboratory Demonstration of Spatial Linear Dark Field Control For Imaging Extrasolar Planets in Reflected Light

    Imaging planets in reflected light, a key focus of future NASA missions and ELTs, requires advanced wavefront control to maintain a deep, temporally correlated null of stellar halo -- i.e. a dark hole -- at just several diffraction beam widths. Using the Ames Coronagraph Experiment testbed, we present the first laboratory tests of Spatial Linear Dark Field Control (LDFC) approaching raw contrasts (\sim 5×\times107^{-7}) and separations (1.5--5.2 λ\lambda/D) needed to image jovian planets around Sun-like stars with space-borne coronagraphs like WFIRST-CGI and image exo-Earths around low-mass stars with future ground-based 30m class telescopes. In four separate experiments and for a range of different perturbations, LDFC largely restores (to within a factor of 1.2--1.7) and maintains a dark hole whose contrast is degraded by phase errors by an order of magnitude. Our implementation of classical speckle nulling requires a factor of 2--5 more iterations and 20--50 DM commands to reach contrasts obtained by spatial LDFC. Our results provide a promising path forward to maintaining dark holes without relying on DM probing and in the low-flux regime, which may improve the duty cycle of high-contrast imaging instruments, increase the temporal correlation of speckles, and thus enhance our ability to image true solar system analogues in the next two decades.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacifi

    Bilateral Cochlear Implantation for Children in Nagasaki, Japan

    Objectives: The number of patients with bilateral cochlear implant (CI) has gradually increased as patients and/or parents recognize its effectiveness. The purpose of this report is to evaluate the efficacy of 29 bilateral CI out of 169 pediatric CI users, who received auditory-verbal/oral habilitation at our hearing center. Methods: We evaluated the audiological abilities 29 Japanese children with bilateral CIs including wearing threshold, word recognition score, speech discrimination score at 1 m from front speaker (SP), 1 m from second CI side SP, speech discrimination score under the noise (S/N ratio=80 dB sound pressure level [SPL]/70 dB SPL, 10 dB) at 1 m from front SP, word recognition score under the noise (S/N ratio=80 dB SPL/70 dB SPL, 10 dB) at 1 m from front SP. Results: Binaural hearing using bilateral CI is better than first CI in all speech understanding tests. Especially, there were significant differences between the results of first CI and bilateral CI on SDS at 70 dB SPL (P=0.02), SDS at 1 m from second CI side SP at 60 dB SPL (P=0.02), word recognition score (WRS) at 1 m from second CI side SP at 60 dB SPL (P=0.02), speech discrimination score (SDS) at 1 m from front SP under the noise (S/N=80/70; P=0.01) and WRS at 1 m from front SP under the noise (S/N=80/70; P=0.002). At every age, a second CI is very effective. However, the results of under 9 years old were better than of over 9 years old on the mean SDS under the noise (S/N=80/70) on second CI (P=0.04). About use of a hearing aid (HA) in their opposite side of first CI, on the WRS and SDS under the noise, there were significant differences between the group of over 3 years and the group of under 10 months of HA non user before second CI. Conclusion: These results may show important binaural effectiveness such as binaural summation and head shadow effect. Bilateral CI is very useful medical intervention for many children with severe-to-profound hearing loss in Japan as well as elsewhere

    A Search for TeV Gamma-Ray Emission from High-Peaked Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars Using the Whipple Air-Cherenkov Telescope

    Blazars have traditionally been separated into two broad categories based upon their optical emission characteristics; BL Lacs, with faint or no emission lines, and flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) with prominent, broad emission lines. The spectral energy distribution of FSRQs has generally been thought of as being more akin to the low-peaked BL Lacs, which exhibit a peak in the infrared region of the spectrum, as opposed to high-peaked BL Lacs (HBLs), which exhibit a peak in UV/X-ray region of the spectrum. All blazars currently confirmed as sources of TeV emission are HBLs. Recent surveys have found several FSRQs exhibiting spectral properties similar to HBLs, particularly the synchrotron peak frequency. These objects are potential sources of TeV emission according to several models of blazar jet emission and blazar evolution. Measurements of TeV flux or upper limits could impact existing theories explaining the links between different blazar types and could have a significant impact on our understanding of the nature of objects that are capable of TeV emission. In particular, the presence (or absence) of TeV emission from FSRQs could confirm (or cast doubt upon) recent evolutionary models that expect intermediate objects in a transitionary state between FSRQ and BL Lac. The Whipple 10 meter imaging air-Cherenkov gamma-ray telescope is well suited for TeV gamma-ray observations. Using the Whipple telescope, we have taken data on a small selection of nearby(z<0.1 in most cases), high-peaked FSRQs. Although one of the objects, B2 0321+33, showed marginal evidence of flaring, no significant emission was detected. The implications of this paucity of emission and the derived upper limits are discussed.Comment: accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journa

    A field investigation of phreatophyte-induced fluctuations in the water table

Copyright American Geophysical Union[1] Hydrographs from shallow wells in vegetated riparian zones frequently display a distinctive pattern of diurnal water table fluctuations produced by variations in plant water use. A multisite investigation assessed the major controls on these fluctuations and the ecohydrologic insights that can be gleaned from them. Spatial and temporal variations in the amplitude of the fluctuations are primarily a function of variations in (1) the meteorological drivers of plant water use, (2) vegetation density, type, and vitality, and (3) the specific yield of sediments in the vicinity of the water table. Past hydrologic conditions experienced by the riparian zone vegetation, either in previous years or earlier within the same growing season, are also an important control. Diurnal water table fluctuations can be considered a diagnostic indicator of groundwater consumption by phreatophytes at most sites, so the information embedded within these fluctuations should be more widely exploited in ecohydrologic studies

    Legal Facts and Reasons for Action: Between Deflationary and Robust Conceptions of Law’s Reason-Giving Capacity

    This chapter considers whether legal requirements can constitute reasons for action independently of the merits of the requirement at hand. While jurisprudential opinion on this question is far from uniform, sceptical views are becoming increasingly dominant. Such views typically contend that, while the law can be indicative of pre-existing reasons, or can trigger pre-existing reasons into operation, it cannot constitute new reasons. This chapter offers support to a somewhat less sceptical position, according to which the fact that a legal requirement has been issued can be a reason for action, yet one that is underpinned by bedrock values which law is apt to serve. Notions discussed here include a value-based conception of reasons as facts ; a distinction between complete and incomplete reasons ; and David Enoch’s idea of triggering reason-giving. Following a discussion of criticism against the view adopted here, the chapter concludes by considering some more ‘robust’ conceptions of law’s reason-giving capacity

    Antimicrobial resistance among migrants in Europe: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    BACKGROUND: Rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are rising globally and there is concern that increased migration is contributing to the burden of antibiotic resistance in Europe. However, the effect of migration on the burden of AMR in Europe has not yet been comprehensively examined. Therefore, we did a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify and synthesise data for AMR carriage or infection in migrants to Europe to examine differences in patterns of AMR across migrant groups and in different settings. METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed, and Scopus with no language restrictions from Jan 1, 2000, to Jan 18, 2017, for primary data from observational studies reporting antibacterial resistance in common bacterial pathogens among migrants to 21 European Union-15 and European Economic Area countries. To be eligible for inclusion, studies had to report data on carriage or infection with laboratory-confirmed antibiotic-resistant organisms in migrant populations. We extracted data from eligible studies and assessed quality using piloted, standardised forms. We did not examine drug resistance in tuberculosis and excluded articles solely reporting on this parameter. We also excluded articles in which migrant status was determined by ethnicity, country of birth of participants' parents, or was not defined, and articles in which data were not disaggregated by migrant status. Outcomes were carriage of or infection with antibiotic-resistant organisms. We used random-effects models to calculate the pooled prevalence of each outcome. The study protocol is registered with PROSPERO, number CRD42016043681. FINDINGS: We identified 2274 articles, of which 23 observational studies reporting on antibiotic resistance in 2319 migrants were included. The pooled prevalence of any AMR carriage or AMR infection in migrants was 25·4% (95% CI 19·1-31·8; I2 =98%), including meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (7·8%, 4·8-10·7; I2 =92%) and antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (27·2%, 17·6-36·8; I2 =94%). The pooled prevalence of any AMR carriage or infection was higher in refugees and asylum seekers (33·0%, 18·3-47·6; I2 =98%) than in other migrant groups (6·6%, 1·8-11·3; I2 =92%). The pooled prevalence of antibiotic-resistant organisms was slightly higher in high-migrant community settings (33·1%, 11·1-55·1; I2 =96%) than in migrants in hospitals (24·3%, 16·1-32·6; I2 =98%). We did not find evidence of high rates of transmission of AMR from migrant to host populations. INTERPRETATION: Migrants are exposed to conditions favouring the emergence of drug resistance during transit and in host countries in Europe. Increased antibiotic resistance among refugees and asylum seekers and in high-migrant community settings (such as refugee camps and detention facilities) highlights the need for improved living conditions, access to health care, and initiatives to facilitate detection of and appropriate high-quality treatment for antibiotic-resistant infections during transit and in host countries. Protocols for the prevention and control of infection and for antibiotic surveillance need to be integrated in all aspects of health care, which should be accessible for all migrant groups, and should target determinants of AMR before, during, and after migration.     Conceptualizing a Social Sustainability Framework for Energy Infrastructure Decisions

    The concept of social sustainability is discussed in a wide range of literatures, from urban planning to international development. Authors agree a notion of social sustainability is difficult to define, comprising numerous component parts (criteria), such as community cohesion, human wellbeing, effective dialogue and the access that citizens have to those that make important decisions on their behalf. The definition and measurement of these criteria and the role of social sustainability in energy decision making is a contentious issue. We argue that a community led, asset based approach is required to achieve any sense of how social sustainability can be defined in a community setting within the context of energy developments. We propose a conceptual framework based on a process of community group prioritization and visioning. Our earlier research on public participation and the role of dialogue for nuclear energy development in the UK, US and Japan is used to demonstrate barriers to be overcome if our systemic model of social sustainability is to become a reality. We highlight the importance of fairness and justice, place based approaches and socio-energy systems, concluding that these are necessary to promote a community and institutional awareness of social sustainability for large energy developments
