    Three-Dimensional (3D) Modelling and Optimization for Multipurpose Analysis and Representation of Ancient Statues

    The technological advances that have developed in the field of threedimensional (3D) survey and modelling allow us to digitally and accurately preserve many significant heritage assets that are at risk. With regard to museum assets, extensive digitalization projects aim at achieving multilingual digital libraries accessible to everyone. A first trend is geared to the use of 3D models for further specialized studies, acquiring and processing virtual detailed copies as close as possible to the shape and contents of the real one. On the other hand, many museums look today for more interactive and immersive exhibitions, which involve the visitors’ emotions, and this has contributed to the increase in the use of virtual reality and 3D models in museums installations. In this paper, we present two case studies that belong to these scenarios. Multisensor surveys have been applied to some archeological statues preserved in two museums for multipurpose analyses and representation: a UTI test, which required high detailed data about the geometry of the object, and a communicative application, which needed instead a high level of model optimization, poor geometry, but very good representation that was achieved through remeshing tools and normal maps

    Sperm DNA integrity in relation to exposure to environmental perfluoroalkyl substances – A study of spouses of pregnant women in three geographical regions.

    Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) can interfere with male reproductive function, but evidence in humansis limited. Six hundred four fertilemen(199 from Greenland, 197 from Poland and 208 from Ukraine) wereenrolled in the study. We measured four PFASs in serum (PFOS, PFOA, PFNA and PFHxS) and concurrentDNA damage in spermatozoa by sperm chromatin structure assay (SCSA) and in situ terminal deoxynucleotidyltransferase dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) assay, apoptotic markers in semen (Fas-receptorand Bcl-xL), and reproductive hormones in serum. No association between PFASs and SCSA, apoptoticmarkers or reproductive hormones emerged.Weobserved a slight increase in SHBG and TUNEL-positivitywith increased PFOA exposure in men from Greenland. Thus, consistent evidence that PFAS exposureinterferes with sperm DNA fragmentation, apoptosis or reproductive hormones was not found

    GYES, a multifibre spectrograph for the CFHT

    We have chosen the name of GYES, one of the mythological giants with one hundred arms, offspring of Gaia and Uranus, for our instrument study of a multifibre spectrograph for the prime focus of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Such an instrument could provide an excellent ground-based complement for the Gaia mission and a northern complement to the HERMES project on the AAT. The CFHT is well known for providing a stable prime focus environment, with a large field of view, which has hosted several imaging instruments, but has never hosted a multifibre spectrograph. Building upon the experience gained at GEPI with FLAMES-Giraffe and X-Shooter, we are investigating the feasibility of a high multiplex spectrograph (about 500 fibres) over a field of view 1 degree in diameter. We are investigating an instrument with resolution in the range 15000 to 30000, which should provide accurate chemical abundances for stars down to 16th magnitude and radial velocities, accurate to 1 km/s for fainter stars. The study is led by GEPI-Observatoire de Paris with a contribution from Oxford for the study of the positioner. The financing for the study comes from INSU CSAA and Observatoire de Paris.     The Rab32/BLOC-3-dependent pathway mediates host defense against different pathogens in human macrophages.

    Macrophages provide a first line of defense against microorganisms, and while some mechanisms to kill pathogens such as the oxidative burst are well described, others are still undefined or unknown. Here, we report that the Rab32 guanosine triphosphatase and its guanine nucleotide exchange factor BLOC-3 (biogenesis of lysosome-related organelles complex-3) are central components of a trafficking pathway that controls both bacterial and fungal intracellular pathogens. This host-defense mechanism is active in both human and murine macrophages and is independent of well-known antimicrobial mechanisms such as the NADPH (reduced form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate)-dependent oxidative burst, production of nitric oxide, and antimicrobial peptides. To survive in human macrophages, Salmonella Typhi actively counteracts the Rab32/BLOC-3 pathway through its Salmonella pathogenicity island-1-encoded type III secretion system. These findings demonstrate that the Rab32/BLOC-3 pathway is a novel and universal host-defense pathway and protects mammalian species from various pathogens

    Trawling disturbance effects on the trophic ecology of two co-generic Astropectinid species

    Physical disturbance by trawling can have both negative and positive effects on populations of scavenging benthic organisms. In the present study the impact of fishing activity on feeding behaviour of the two Astropectinids, Astropecten bispinosus and A. irregularis, was assessed based on stomach contents analysis. The study was carried out along trawled seabed highlighting the positive response of the two facultative scavengers to carrion generated by trawl disturbance. Furthermore, there was greater food specialization in areas that were more heavily exploited by trawling. This specialisation could be linked to the availability of certain prey that results from the passage of fishing gears across the seabed. Interestingly, differences between the two species analysed have been highlighted in term of population dynamic, feeding rate, diet composition and diet diversity, testifying their capacity to coexist in the same fishing grounds

    Challenges in optics for Extremely Large Telescope instrumentation

    We describe and summarize the optical challenges for future instrumentation for Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs). Knowing the complex instrumental requirements is crucial for the successful design of 30-60m aperture telescopes. After all, the success of ELTs will heavily rely on its instrumentation and this, in turn, will depend on the ability to produce large and ultra-precise optical components like light-weight mirrors, aspheric lenses, segmented filters, and large gratings. New materials and manufacturing processes are currently under study, both at research institutes and in industry. In the present paper, we report on its progress with particular emphasize on volume-phase-holographic gratings, photochromic materials, sintered silicon-carbide mirrors, ion-beam figuring, ultra-precision surfaces, and free-form optics. All are promising technologies opening new degrees of freedom to optical designers. New optronic-mechanical systems will enable efficient use of the very large focal planes. We also provide exploratory descriptions of "old" and "new" optical technologies together with suggestions to instrument designers to overcome some of the challenges placed by ELT instrumentation.Comment: (Proc.     Identification of membrane proteins regulated by ADAM15 by SUSPECS proteomics

    ADAM15 is a member of the disintegrin-metalloproteinase family of sheddases, which plays a role in several biological processes including cartilage homeostasis. In contrast with well-characterized ADAMs, such as the canonical sheddases ADAM17 and ADAM10, little is known about substrates of ADAM15 or how the enzyme exerts its biological functions. Herein, we used “surface-spanning enrichment with click-sugars (SUSPECS)” proteomics to identify ADAM15 substrates and/or proteins regulated by the proteinase at the cell surface of chondrocyte-like cells. Silencing of ADAM15 by siRNAs significantly altered membrane levels of 13 proteins, all previously not known to be regulated by ADAM15. We used orthogonal techniques to validate ADAM15 effects on 3 of these proteins which have known roles in cartilage homeostasis. This confirmed that ADAM15-silencing increased cell surface levels of the programmed cell death 1 ligand 2 (PDCD1LG2) and reduced cell surface levels of vasorin and the sulfate transporter SLC26A2 through an unknown post-translational mechanism. The increase of PDCD1LG2 by ADAM15 knockdown, a single-pass type I transmembrane protein, suggested it could be a proteinase substrate. However, shed PDCD1LG2 could not be detected even by a data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry, a highly sensitive method for identification and quantification of proteins in complex protein samples, suggesting that ADAM15 regulates PDCD1LG2 membrane levels by a mechanism different from ectodomain shedding

    Measurement of the cross-section and charge asymmetry of WW bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at s=8\sqrt{s}=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    This paper presents measurements of the W+→Ό+ÎœW^+ \rightarrow \mu^+\nu and W−→Ό−ΜW^- \rightarrow \mu^-\nu cross-sections and the associated charge asymmetry as a function of the absolute pseudorapidity of the decay muon. The data were collected in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 20.2~\mbox{fb^{-1}}. The precision of the cross-section measurements varies between 0.8% to 1.5% as a function of the pseudorapidity, excluding the 1.9% uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The charge asymmetry is measured with an uncertainty between 0.002 and 0.003. The results are compared with predictions based on next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations with various parton distribution functions and have the sensitivity to discriminate between them.Comment: 38 pages in total, author list starting page 22, 5 figures, 4 tables, submitted to EPJC.     Single hadron response measurement and calorimeter jet energy scale uncertainty with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    The uncertainty on the calorimeter energy response to jets of particles is derived for the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). First, the calorimeter response to single isolated charged hadrons is measured and compared to the Monte Carlo simulation using proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of sqrt(s) = 900 GeV and 7 TeV collected during 2009 and 2010. Then, using the decay of K_s and Lambda particles, the calorimeter response to specific types of particles (positively and negatively charged pions, protons, and anti-protons) is measured and compared to the Monte Carlo predictions. Finally, the jet energy scale uncertainty is determined by propagating the response uncertainty for single charged and neutral particles to jets. The response uncertainty is 2-5% for central isolated hadrons and 1-3% for the final calorimeter jet energy scale.Comment: 24 pages plus author list (36 pages total), 23 figures, 1 table, submitted to European Physical Journal
