    Making Space for Mothering: Collaboration as Feminist Practice

    Our collaborative practice spans nearly a decade working together on data collection, writing, presentations, and publications as weā€™ve explored the intimate care that doulas provide to women in labor. In this essay, we use intimate labor as both a practice and a theoretical frame to think of collaboration as a feminist project that recognizes the expertise gathered from mothering and makes space for it in academia. Eileen Boris and Rhacel Salazar ParreƱas (2010, 7) define intimate labor as ā€œwork that involves embodied and affective interactions in the service of social reproduction,ā€ and suggest that it requires ā€œbodily or emotional closeness, close observations of another and personal knowledge or informationā€ (2). In our work on doulas, we found that this concept of intimate labor helps us articulate how doula work happens in particular social, political, and economic contexts. Intimate labor also considers how these contexts structure expectations and relationships between those involved in intimate care (Boris and ParreƱas 2010). Intimate labor is often invisible or marginalized because of its historic connection to women, people of color, and private spaces. Interrogating the way intimate labor is structured and performed thus allows for insight about class, gender, race, and other power relations. At the heart of our work on mothers, mothering, and the intimate labor of doulas is an understanding of collaborative work as another form of intimate labor

    Practising Intimate Labour: Birth Doulas Respond during COVID-19

    Birth doulas provide non-medical intimate support to pregnant people and their families. This support starts at the very foundation of life ā€“ breath. Doulas remind, encourage and accompany people through labour by breathing with them. However, the global COVID-19 pandemic has interrupted doulasā€™ intimate work, and they are forced to navigate new restrictions surrounding birth practices. Based on data collected from a qualitative survey of over five-hundred doulas as well as subsequent follow-up interviews with select doulas, we find intimacy at births disrupted and reshaped. We suggest that an analysis of doulas provides a unique way to think through the complexities surrounding reproduction precisely due to doulasā€™ ability to navigate intimate labour between and across boundaries

Although birdsong is the premier model for understanding vocal development, the development of vocal interaction rules in birds and possible parallels to humans have been little studied. Many tropical songbirds engage in complex vocal interactions in the form of duets between mated pairs. In some species, duets show precise temporal coordination and follow rules (duet codes) governing which song type one bird uses to reply to each of the song types of its mate. We determined whether these duetting rules are acquired during early development in canebrake wrens. Results show that juveniles acquire a duet code by singing with a mated pair of adults and that juveniles gradually increase their fidelity to the code over time. Additionally, we found that juveniles exhibit poorer temporal coordination than adults and improve their coordination as time progresses. Human turn-taking, an analogous rule to temporal coordination, is learned during early development. We report that the ontogeny of vocal interaction rules in songbirds is analogous to that of human conversation rules.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Deep learning for denoising High-Rate Global Navigation Satellite System data

    High-rate global navigation satellite system (HR-GNSS) data records ground displacements and can be used to identify earthquakes and slow slip events.Ā  One limitation of such data is the high amplitude, cm-level noise which make it difficult to identify processes that produce surface displacements smaller than these values.Ā  Deep learning has proven adept at performing many useful tasks in seismology and geophysics.Ā  Here we explore using deep learning to denoise HR-GNSS data.Ā  We develop three different convolutional neural networks with similar architectures but different targets.Ā  Training data are synthetic HR-GNSS records and actual noise recordings that are superimposed to generate noisy signals.Ā  We train each of the three models to output masks that can be used to reconstruct the true signal.Ā  We use a set of performance metrics that quantify the modelsā€™ ability to denoise the testing data and find that denoising significantly improves the signal-to-noise ratio and the ability to identify first arrivals.Ā  Finally, we test the models on HR-GNSS records from the Ridgecrest earthquakes recorded at stations that have nearly colocated strong-motion sites used ground-truth the denoising results.Ā  We find that the models greatly improve the signal-to-noise ratios in these records and make the P-wave onset clearly identifiable

    Single hadron response measurement and calorimeter jet energy scale uncertainty with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    The uncertainty on the calorimeter energy response to jets of particles is derived for the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). First, the calorimeter response to single isolated charged hadrons is measured and compared to the Monte Carlo simulation using proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of sqrt(s) = 900 GeV and 7 TeV collected during 2009 and 2010. Then, using the decay of K_s and Lambda particles, the calorimeter response to specific types of particles (positively and negatively charged pions, protons, and anti-protons) is measured and compared to the Monte Carlo predictions. Finally, the jet energy scale uncertainty is determined by propagating the response uncertainty for single charged and neutral particles to jets. The response uncertainty is 2-5% for central isolated hadrons and 1-3% for the final calorimeter jet energy scale.Comment: 24 pages plus author list (36 pages total), 23 figures, 1 table, submitted to European Physical Journal

    Search for squarks and gluinos in events with isolated leptons, jets and missing transverse momentum at sāˆš=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    The results of a search for supersymmetry in final states containing at least one isolated lepton (electron or muon), jets and large missing transverse momentum with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider are reported. The search is based on proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy sāˆš=8 TeV collected in 2012, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20 fbāˆ’1. No significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed. Limits are set on supersymmetric particle masses for various supersymmetric models. Depending on the model, the search excludes gluino masses up to 1.32 TeV and squark masses up to 840 GeV. Limits are also set on the parameters of a minimal universal extra dimension model, excluding a compactification radius of 1/R c = 950 GeV for a cut-off scale times radius (Ī›R c) of approximately 30

    Measurement of Ļ‡ c1 and Ļ‡ c2 production with sāˆš = 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    The prompt and non-prompt production cross-sections for the Ļ‡ c1 and Ļ‡ c2 charmonium states are measured in pp collisions at sāˆš = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using 4.5 fbāˆ’1 of integrated luminosity. The Ļ‡ c states are reconstructed through the radiative decay Ļ‡ c ā†’ J/ĻˆĪ³ (with J/Ļˆ ā†’ Ī¼ + Ī¼ āˆ’) where photons are reconstructed from Ī³ ā†’ e + e āˆ’ conversions. The production rate of the Ļ‡ c2 state relative to the Ļ‡ c1 state is measured for prompt and non-prompt Ļ‡ c as a function of J/Ļˆ transverse momentum. The prompt Ļ‡ c cross-sections are combined with existing measurements of prompt J/Ļˆ production to derive the fraction of prompt J/Ļˆ produced in feed-down from Ļ‡ c decays. The fractions of Ļ‡ c1 and Ļ‡ c2 produced in b-hadron decays are also measured

    Evidence for the Higgs-boson Yukawa coupling to tau leptons with the ATLAS detector

    Results of a search for H ā†’ Ļ„ Ļ„ decays are presented, based on the full set of proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC during 2011 and 2012. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of 4.5 fbāˆ’1 and 20.3 fbāˆ’1 at centre-of-mass energies of āˆšs = 7 TeV and āˆšs = 8 TeV respectively. All combinations of leptonic (Ļ„ ā†’ `Ī½Ī½ĀÆ with ` = e, Āµ) and hadronic (Ļ„ ā†’ hadrons Ī½) tau decays are considered. An excess of events over the expected background from other Standard Model processes is found with an observed (expected) significance of 4.5 (3.4) standard deviations. This excess provides evidence for the direct coupling of the recently discovered Higgs boson to fermions. The measured signal strength, normalised to the Standard Model expectation, of Āµ = 1.43 +0.43 āˆ’0.37 is consistent with the predicted Yukawa coupling strength in the Standard Model

    Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections for Higgs boson production in the diphoton decay channel at sāˆš=8 TeV with ATLAS

    Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections are presented for Higgs boson production in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sāˆš=8 TeV. The analysis is performed in the H ā†’ Ī³Ī³ decay channel using 20.3 fbāˆ’1 of data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The signal is extracted using a fit to the diphoton invariant mass spectrum assuming that the width of the resonance is much smaller than the experimental resolution. The signal yields are corrected for the effects of detector inefficiency and resolution. The pp ā†’ H ā†’ Ī³Ī³ fiducial cross section is measured to be 43.2 Ā±9.4(stat.) āˆ’ā€‰2.9 +ā€‰3.2 (syst.) Ā±1.2(lumi)fb for a Higgs boson of mass 125.4GeV decaying to two isolated photons that have transverse momentum greater than 35% and 25% of the diphoton invariant mass and each with absolute pseudorapidity less than 2.37. Four additional fiducial cross sections and two cross-section limits are presented in phase space regions that test the theoretical modelling of different Higgs boson production mechanisms, or are sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model. Differential cross sections are also presented, as a function of variables related to the diphoton kinematics and the jet activity produced in the Higgs boson events. The observed spectra are statistically limited but broadly in line with the theoretical expectations
