    A capacitance spectroscopy-based platform for realizing gate-defined electronic lattices

    Electrostatic confinement in semiconductors provides a flexible platform for the emulation of interacting electrons in a two-dimensional lattice, including in the presence of gauge fields. This combination offers the potential to realize a wide host of quantum phases. Here we present a measurement and fabrication scheme that builds on capacitance spectroscopy and allows for the independent control of density and periodic potential strength imposed on a two-dimensional electron gas. We characterize disorder levels and (in)homogeneity and develop and optimize different gating strategies at length scales where interactions are expected to be strong. A continuation of these ideas might see to fruition the emulation of interaction-driven Mott transitions or Hofstadter butterfly physics

    Macroscopic quantum superposition of current states in a Josephson-junction loop

    Superconducting circuits with Josephson tunnel junctions are interesting systems for research on quantum-mechanical behavior of macroscopic degrees of freedom. A particular realization is a small superconducting loop containing three Josephson junctions. Close to magnetic frustration 1/2, the physics of this system corresponds to a double well, whose minima correspond to persistent currents of opposite sign. We present DC measurements of the flux indicating a smooth transition close to the degeneracy point even at very low temperatures. Furthermore, microwave-spectroscopy experiments allow for the excitation to the next excited state. The dependence of the energy of the resonance on the applied flux clearly indicates the nature of these states as tunneling-splitted superpositions of flux states. We theoretically analyze the system using a generalized master-equation formulation of the spin-boson model. We address the nature of the measuring process by a switching DC SQUID and the possible interpretation of the spectroscopy data in terms of quantum coherence. We discuss these aspects in the context of further applications as a quantum bit

    Ursodeoxycholic acid for the prevention of symptomatic gallstone disease after bariatric surgery (UPGRADE) : a multicentre, double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled superiority trial

    Background Rapid weight loss is a major risk factor for the formation of cholesterol gallstones. Consequently, patients with morbid obesity undergoing bariatric surgery frequently develop symptomatic gallstone disease. This trial assessed the efficacy of ursodeoxycholic acid versus placebo for the prevention of symptomatic gallstone disease after bariatric surgery.Methods This multicentre, double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled superiority trial enrolled patients with an intact gallbladder scheduled for laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) or sleeve gastrectomy in three hospitals in the Netherlands. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1) by a web-based randomisation module to receive 900 mg ursodeoxycholic acid daily for 6 months or matched placebo. Randomisation was stratified by the presence of asymptomatic gallstones at baseline and type of surgery. Patients, clinicians, and study staff were masked to treatment allocation. The primary endpoint was symptomatic gallstone disease within 24 months, assessed in the modified intention-to-treat population (all randomly assigned eligible patients with any postrandomisation measurement). Prespecified subgroup analyses were done based on the stratification groups. Safety was assessed in all patients who took at least one dose of the study drug. This trial is registered with the Netherlands Trial Register, NL5954.Findings Between Jan 11, 2017, and Oct 22, 2018, 985 patients were randomly assigned to receive either ursodeoxycholic acid (n=492) or placebo (n=493). 967 patients were included in the modified intention-to-treat population, of whom 959 had data available for primary endpoint assessment. 189 (20%) patients had asymptomatic gallstones at baseline and 78 (8%) received a sleeve gastrectomy. Symptomatic gallstone disease occurred in 31 (6.5%) of 475 patients in the ursodeoxycholic acid group and in 47 (9.7%) of 484 patients in the placebo group (relative risk 0.67, 95% CI 0.43-1.04, p=0.071). Logistic regression showed a significant interaction between ursodeoxycholic acid and the presence of asymptomatic gallstones at baseline (p=0.046), with an effect of ursodeoxycholic acid in patients without (0.47, 0.27-0.84, p=0.0081), and no effect in patients with asymptomatic gallstones at baseline (1.22, 0.61-2.47, p=0.57). The effect was stronger in patients without gallstones at baseline undergoing RYGB (0.37, 0.20-0.71, p=0.0016), whereas the subgroup of patients undergoing sleeve gastrectomy was too small to draw clear conclusions. Adverse events were rare. In the ursodeoxycholic acid group, diarrhoea occurred in four (0.9%) of 444 patients and skin rash in two (0.5%) patients. In the placebo group, diarrhoea occurred in two (0.4%) of 453 patients and skin rash in two (0.4%) patients. The total number of serious adverse events did not significantly differ between the trial groups (75 [17%] in 444 patients in the ursodeoxycholic acid group and 102 [23%] in 453 patients in the placebo group). The most common serious adverse events were abdominal pain and internal hernia. No serious adverse event was attributed to the study drug.Interpretation Ursodeoxycholic acid prophylaxis did not significantly reduce the occurrence of symptomatic gallstone disease in all patients after bariatric surgery. In patients without gallstones before RYGB surgery, ursodeoxycholic acid treatment reduced the occurrence of symptomatic gallstone disease compared with placebo. Further research is needed to assess the efficacy of ursodeoxycholic acid after sleeve gastrectomy. Copyright (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd.     Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results

    Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp. Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Physics Letters B.     Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

    This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio

    Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS

    The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes.
