    Braneworld Tensor Anisotropies in the CMB

    Cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations provide in principle a high-precision test of models which are motivated by M theory. We set out the framework of a program to compute the tensor anisotropies in the CMB that are generated in braneworld models. In the simplest approximation, we show the braneworld imprint as a correction to the power spectra for standard temperature and polarization anisotropies.Comment: Minor corrections and references added.     Search for the Chiral Magnetic Effect in Au+Au collisions at sNN=27\sqrt{s_{_{\rm{NN}}}}=27 GeV with the STAR forward Event Plane Detectors

    A decisive experimental test of the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) is considered one of the major scientific goals at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) towards understanding the nontrivial topological fluctuations of the Quantum Chromodynamics vacuum. In heavy-ion collisions, the CME is expected to result in a charge separation phenomenon across the reaction plane, whose strength could be strongly energy dependent. The previous CME searches have been focused on top RHIC energy collisions. In this Letter, we present a low energy search for the CME in Au+Au collisions at sNN=27\sqrt{s_{_{\rm{NN}}}}=27 GeV. We measure elliptic flow scaled charge-dependent correlators relative to the event planes that are defined at both mid-rapidity ∣η∣<1.0|\eta|<1.0 and at forward rapidity 2.1<∣η∣<5.12.1 < |\eta|<5.1. We compare the results based on the directed flow plane (Κ1\Psi_1) at forward rapidity and the elliptic flow plane (Κ2\Psi_2) at both central and forward rapidity. The CME scenario is expected to result in a larger correlation relative to Κ1\Psi_1 than to Κ2\Psi_2, while a flow driven background scenario would lead to a consistent result for both event planes[1,2]. In 10-50\% centrality, results using three different event planes are found to be consistent within experimental uncertainties, suggesting a flow driven background scenario dominating the measurement. We obtain an upper limit on the deviation from a flow driven background scenario at the 95\% confidence level. This work opens up a possible road map towards future CME search with the high statistics data from the RHIC Beam Energy Scan Phase-II.Comment: main: 8 pages, 5 figures; supplementary material: 2 pages, 1 figur

    Risk profiles and one-year outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation in India: Insights from the GARFIELD-AF Registry.

    BACKGROUND: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012-2016). In India, the mean age was 65.8 years at diagnosis of NVAF. Hypertension was the most prevalent risk factor for AF, present in 68.5% of patients from India and in 76.3% of patients globally (P < 0.001). Diabetes and coronary artery disease (CAD) were prevalent in 36.2% and 28.1% of patients as compared with global prevalence of 22.2% and 21.6%, respectively (P < 0.001 for both). Antiplatelet therapy was the most common antithrombotic treatment in India. With increasing stroke risk, however, patients were more likely to receive oral anticoagulant therapy [mainly vitamin K antagonist (VKA)], but average international normalized ratio (INR) was lower among Indian patients [median INR value 1.6 (interquartile range {IQR}: 1.3-2.3) versus 2.3 (IQR 1.8-2.8) (P < 0.001)]. Compared with other countries, patients from India had markedly higher rates of all-cause mortality [7.68 per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval 6.32-9.35) vs 4.34 (4.16-4.53), P < 0.0001], while rates of stroke/systemic embolism and major bleeding were lower after 1 year of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Compared to previously published registries from India, the GARFIELD-AF registry describes clinical profiles and outcomes in Indian patients with AF of a different etiology. The registry data show that compared to the rest of the world, Indian AF patients are younger in age and have more diabetes and CAD. Patients with a higher stroke risk are more likely to receive anticoagulation therapy with VKA but are underdosed compared with the global average in the GARFIELD-AF.     Novel hypoglycemic effects of Ganoderma lucidum water-extract in obese/diabetic (+db/+db) mice

    In this study, we evaluated the pharmacological effects of Ganoderma lucidum (G. lucidum) (water-extract) (0.003, 0.03 and 0.3 g/kg, 4-week oral gavage) consumption using the lean (+db/+m) and the obese/diabetic (+db/+db) mice. Different physiological parameters (plasma glucose and insulin levels, lipoproteins-cholesterol levels, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK), 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMG CoA reductase) and isolated aorta relaxation of both species were measured and compared. G. lucidum (0.03 and 0.3 g/kg) lowered the serum glucose level in +db/+db mice after the first week of treatment whereas a reduction was observed in +db/+m mice only fed with 0.3 g/kg of G. lucidum at the fourth week. A higher hepatic PEPCK gene expression was found in +db/+db mice. G. lucidum (0.03 and 0.3 g/kg) markedly reduced the PEPCK expression in +db/+db mice whereas the expression of PEPCK was attenuated in +db/+m mice (0.3 g/kg G. lucidum). HMG CoA reductase protein expression (in both hepatic and extra-hepatic organs) and the serum insulin level were not altered by G. lucidum. These data demonstrate that G. lucidum consumption can provide beneficial effects in treating type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) by lowering the serum glucose levels through the suppression of the hepatic PEPCK gene expression

    Long-Term Efficacy and Safety of Entrectinib in ROS1 Fusion–Positive NSCLC

    INTRODUCTION: Entrectinib is an approved tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) for ROS1 fusion–positive NSCLC. An updated integrated analysis of entrectinib from the ALKA-372-001, STARTRK-1, and STARTRK-2 trials is presented, with substantially longer follow-up, more patients, and the first description of the median overall survival (OS). An exploratory analysis of entrectinib in ROS1 fusion–positive NSCLC with the central nervous system (CNS)–only progression post-crizotinib is reported. METHODS: Adults with ROS1 fusion–positive, locally advanced or metastatic NSCLC who received at least one dose of entrectinib and had 12 months or longer of follow-up were included in the analysis. Co-primary end points were confirmed objective response rate (ORR) and duration of response (DoR) by blinded independent central review. The data cutoff was on August 31, 2020. RESULTS: The efficacy-assessable population comprised 168 ROS1 TKI–naïve patients. The median survival follow-up was 29.1 months (interquartile range, 21.8–35.9). The ORR was 68% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 60.2–74.8); the median DoR was 20.5 months. The median progression-free survival (PFS) was 15.7 months and the median OS was 47.8 months. In the 25 patients with measurable baseline CNS metastases, the intracranial ORR was 80% (95% CI: 59.3–93.2), median intracranial DoR was 12.9 months, and median intracranial PFS was 8.8 months. Among 18 patients with CNS-only progression on previous crizotinib treatment, two achieved a partial response (11%) and four had stable disease (22%). In seven patients with measurable CNS disease from this cohort, the intracranial ORR was 14% (1 partial response). CONCLUSIONS: Entrectinib is active and achieves prolonged survival in ROS1 TKI–naïve patients with ROS1 fusion–positive NSCLC.
