Compaction behaviour of lateritic soil modified with cement and rice husk ash for road construction

    Get PDF
This study is an investigation into the possibility of using rice husk ash blended with cement (CRHA) in the modification of the basic engineering properties of a marginal lateritic soil with the aim of qualifying the soil for use in the construction of roads. In the study, the properties of the natural soil sample such as bearing strength (measured in California Bearing Ratio: CBR), compaction behaviour as well as other consistency parameters were evaluated. The same properties were also evaluated for the soil samples modified with C-RHA. The findings of the study show that an increase in values of the C-RHA results a decrease in plasticity. An improvement in the CBR was observed with increasing value of the RHA at specified cement contents with peak values at 5% cement and 10% RHA. This indicates the potential of using 7.5-10% RHA admixed with 5% cement contents for laterite soil stabilization for use as a sub-grade soil for road construction. Keywords: Cement, Compaction behaviour, Lateritic soil, Rice husk ash, Soil stabilization, Road constructio

Perception of Muslim Consumers Towards Halal Branding in Advertising

The study is an eye opener into areas of Islamic Marketing that are becoming more substantial and have not been addressed. In advertisements, Halal is considered a brand that holds significant value for Muslim consumers. Furthermore, Halal branding especially in advertising has emerged as a new type of marketing advertisement. Such emergence has caused businesses to reconsider their advertising approach to attract new and retain old consumers. The study is aimed at providing an enhanced understanding on the role of advertising and branding towards Halal consumption. The role is further studied upon through extensive literature review and empirical data collection involving Muslim consumers. Analysis of data collected implied that existing insights on religious consumption is lopsided compared to the blooming Halal market particularly the perception of Muslim consumers towards Halal branding. Findings thus not only affect Muslim consumers, marketers, the government but also impact the society

Impact of Trade Liberalization on the Nigerian Manufacturing Sector

The study examines the inter-relationship between trade liberalization and manufacturing performance in Nigeria Time series data sourced from Central Bank of Nigeria CBN National Bureau of Statistics NBS and Manufactures Association of Nigeria MAN for the period 1980 to 2010 were utilised Short-run error correction model ECM and long-run OLS regression techniques was employed to derive the estimates The findings from the study indicate that the adoption of trade liberalization strategies in Nigeria have negatively affected the country s manufacturing sector This shows that trade openness has brought about negative total factor productivity in Nigeria as manufacturers often respond to uncompetitive ease in trade restrictions by outright closures reduction in production and sometimes relocation to neighboring countries However empirical evidence suggests trade liberalization increases Nigeria s manufacturing output when total value of manufacturing output was used as measure of performance although was not significant at the conventional test levels Additionally the incidence of the Dutch Disease syndrome was found to adversely affect Nigeria s manufacturing sector performance measures employed in this study and result aptly support the resource-curse hypothesi

Search for neutral resonances decaying into a Z boson and a pair of b jets or τ leptons

A search is performed for a new resonance decaying into a lighter resonance and a Z boson. Two channels are studied, targeting the decay of the lighter resonance into either a pair of oppositely charged τ leptons or a bb‾ pair. The Z boson is identified via its decays to electrons or muons. The search exploits data collected by the CMS experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.8 fb −1 . No significant deviations are observed from the standard model expectation and limits are set on production cross sections and parameters of two-Higgs-doublet models

Search for a low-mass pseudoscalar Higgs boson produced in association with a bb⁻ pair in pp collisions at √s=8 TeV

    Get PDF
A search is reported for a light pseudoscalar Higgs boson decaying to a pair of tau leptons, produced in association with a b (b) over bar pair, in the context of two-Higgs-doublet models. The results are based on pp collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb(-1). Pseudoscalar boson masses between 25 and 80 GeV are probed. No evidence for a pseudoscalar boson is found and upper limits are set on the product of cross section and branching fraction to tau pairs between 7 and 39 pb at the 95% confidence level. This excludes pseudoscalar A bosons with masses between 25 and 80 GeV, with SM-like Higgs boson negative couplings to down-type fermions, produced in association with bb pairs, in Type II, two-Higgs-doublet models.
