    Determinants and Predictors of Grief Severity and Persistence: The Rotterdam Study

    Objective: We aimed to explore correlates and predictors of bereavement severity and persistence (triggered by ā€œloss of a loved oneā€; referent group partner loss) in the Rotterdam cohort. Method: We used linear regression to examine factors associated with grief severity using a cross-sectional analysis and logistic regression to determine prospective associations. Results: Cross-sectionaly, females, child-lost, higher depressive symptoms, lower education, and difficulties in daily activities were independently associated with a higher bereavement severity. Prospectively (6 years; response rate 71%), the baseline value of the grief severity was the single predictor significantly associated with grief persistence. Discussion: Our results suggest that only grief severity is independently associated with grief persistence. Further studies are needed to confirm ou

    Development of a Population Pharmacokinetic Model To Describe Azithromycin Whole-Blood and Plasma Concentrations over Time in Healthy Subjects

    ABSTRACT Azithromycin (AZI), a broad-spectrum antibiotic, accumulates in polymorphonuclear cells and peripheral blood mononuclear cells. The distribution of AZI in proinflammatory cells may be important to the anti-inflammatory properties. Previous studies have described plasma AZI pharmacokinetics. The objective of this study was to describe the pharmacokinetics of AZI in whole blood (concentration in whole blood [ C b ]) and plasma (concentration in plasma [ C p ]) of healthy subjects. In this study, 12 subjects received AZI (500 mg once a day for 3 days). AZI C b and C p were quantified in serial samples collected up to 3 weeks after the last dose and analyzed using noncompartmental and compartmental methods. After the last dose, C b was greater than C p . Importantly, C b , but not C p , was quantifiable in all but one subject at 3 weeks. The blood area under the curve during a 24-h dosing interval (AUC 24 ) was āˆ¼2-fold greater than the plasma AUC 24 , but simulations suggested that C b was not at steady state by day 3. Upon exploration of numerous models, an empirical 3-compartment model adequately described C p and C b , but C p was somewhat underestimated. Intercompartmental clearance (CL; likely representing cells) was lower than apparent oral CL (18 versus 118 liters/h). Plasma, peripheral, and cell compartmental volumes were 439 liters, 2,980 liters, and 3,084 liters, respectively. Interindividual variability in CL was low (26.2%), while the volume of distribution variability was high (107%). This is the first report to describe AZI C b in healthy subjects, the distribution parameters between C p and C b , and AZI retention in blood for up to 3 weeks following 3 daily doses. The model can be used to predict C b from C p for AZI under various dosing regimens. (This study has been registered at ClinicalTrials.gov under registration no. NCT01026064.

    Maximum static inspiratory and expiratory pressures with different lung volumes

    BACKGROUND: Maximum pressures developed by the respiratory muscles can indicate the health of the respiratory system, help to determine maximum respiratory flow rates, and contribute to respiratory power development. Past measurements of maximum pressures have been found to be inadequate for inclusion in some exercise models involving respiration. METHODS: Maximum inspiratory and expiratory airway pressures were measured over a range of lung volumes in 29 female and 19 male adults. A commercial bell spirometry system was programmed to occlude airflow at nine target lung volumes ranging from 10% to 90% of vital capacity. RESULTS: In women, maximum expiratory pressure increased with volume from 39 to 61 cmH(2)O and maximum inspiratory pressure decreased with volume from 66 to 28 cmH(2)O. In men, maximum expiratory pressure increased with volume from 63 to 97 cmH(2)O and maximum inspiratory pressure decreased with volume from 97 to 39 cmH(2)O. Equations describing pressures for both sexes are: P(e)/P(max )= 0.1426 Ln( %VC) + 0.3402 R(2 )= 0.95 P(i)/P(max )= 0.234 Ln(100 - %VC) - 0.0828 R(2 = )0.96 CONCLUSION: These results were found to be consistent with values and trends obtained by other authors.     Monocyte Distribution Width (MDW) as novel inflammatory marker with prognostic significance in COVID-19 patients

    Monocyte Distribution Width (MDW), a new cytometric parameter correlating with cytomorphologic changes occurring upon massive monocyte activation, has recently emerged as promising early biomarker of sepsis. Similar to sepsis, monocyte/macrophage subsets are considered key mediators of the life-threatening hyper-inflammatory disorder characterizing severe COVID-19. In this study, we longitudinally analyzed MDW values in a cohort of 87 COVID-19 patients consecutively admitted to our hospital, showing significant correlations between MDW and common inflammatory markers, namely CRP (p < 0.001), fibrinogen (p < 0.001) and ferritin (p < 0.01). Moreover, high MDW values resulted to be prognostically associated with fatal outcome in COVID-19 patients (AUC = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.66\u20130.87, sensitivity 0.75, specificity 0.70, MDW threshold 26.4; RR = 4.91, 95% CI: 1.73\u201313.96; OR = 7.14, 95% CI: 2.06\u201324.71). This pilot study shows that MDW can be useful in the monitoring of COVID-19 patients, as this innovative hematologic biomarker is: (1) easy to obtain, (2) directly related to the activation state of a fundamental inflammatory cell subset (i.e. monocytes, pivotal in both cytokine storm and sepsis immunopathogenesis), (3) well correlated with clinical severity of COVID-19-associated inflammatory disorder, and, in turn, (4) endowed with relevant prognostic significance. Additional studies are needed to define further the clinical impact of MDW testing in the management of COVID-19 patients

    Measurement of the cross-section and charge asymmetry of WW bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at s=8\sqrt{s}=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    This paper presents measurements of the W+ā†’Ī¼+Ī½W^+ \rightarrow \mu^+\nu and Wāˆ’ā†’Ī¼āˆ’Ī½W^- \rightarrow \mu^-\nu cross-sections and the associated charge asymmetry as a function of the absolute pseudorapidity of the decay muon. The data were collected in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 20.2~\mbox{fb^{-1}}. The precision of the cross-section measurements varies between 0.8% to 1.5% as a function of the pseudorapidity, excluding the 1.9% uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The charge asymmetry is measured with an uncertainty between 0.002 and 0.003. The results are compared with predictions based on next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations with various parton distribution functions and have the sensitivity to discriminate between them.Comment: 38 pages in total, author list starting page 22, 5 figures, 4 tables, submitted to EPJC.     Search for direct stau production in events with two hadronic tau-leptons in root s=13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of the supersymmetric partners ofĻ„-leptons (staus) in final stateswith two hadronically decayingĻ„-leptons is presented. The analysis uses a dataset of pp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of139fbāˆ’1, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LargeHadron Collider at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. No significant deviation from the expected StandardModel background is observed. Limits are derived in scenarios of direct production of stau pairs with eachstau decaying into the stable lightest neutralino and oneĻ„-lepton in simplified models where the two staumass eigenstates are degenerate. Stau masses from 120 GeV to 390 GeV are excluded at 95% confidencelevel for a massless lightest neutralino

    A search for supersymmetry through the pair production of electroweakinos with mass splittings near the electroweak scale and decaying via on-shell W and Z bosons is presented for a three-lepton final state. The analyzed proton-proton collision data taken at a center-of-mass energy of āˆšs=13ā€‰ā€‰TeV were collected between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139ā€‰ā€‰fbāˆ’1. A search, emulating the recursive jigsaw reconstruction technique with easily reproducible laboratory-frame variables, is performed. The two excesses observed in the 2015ā€“2016 data recursive jigsaw analysis in the low-mass three-lepton phase space are reproduced. Results with the full data set are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations. They are interpreted to set exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level on simplified models of chargino-neutralino pair production for masses up to 345 GeV

    Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections for Higgs boson production in the diphoton decay channel at sāˆš=8 TeV with ATLAS

    Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections are presented for Higgs boson production in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sāˆš=8 TeV. The analysis is performed in the H ā†’ Ī³Ī³ decay channel using 20.3 fbāˆ’1 of data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The signal is extracted using a fit to the diphoton invariant mass spectrum assuming that the width of the resonance is much smaller than the experimental resolution. The signal yields are corrected for the effects of detector inefficiency and resolution. The pp ā†’ H ā†’ Ī³Ī³ fiducial cross section is measured to be 43.2 Ā±9.4(stat.) āˆ’ā€‰2.9 +ā€‰3.2 (syst.) Ā±1.2(lumi)fb for a Higgs boson of mass 125.4GeV decaying to two isolated photons that have transverse momentum greater than 35% and 25% of the diphoton invariant mass and each with absolute pseudorapidity less than 2.37. Four additional fiducial cross sections and two cross-section limits are presented in phase space regions that test the theoretical modelling of different Higgs boson production mechanisms, or are sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model. Differential cross sections are also presented, as a function of variables related to the diphoton kinematics and the jet activity produced in the Higgs boson events. The observed spectra are statistically limited but broadly in line with the theoretical expectations
