A high-resolution stable isotope record from a Peruvian stalagmite
Speleothems are known as carbonate formations in caves. The last few years there is a growing scientific interest in speleothems for climate reconstruction (McDermott, in press; Sancho et al., in press; Jirnénez de Cisneros et al., 2003; Genty et al., 2003; Baker et al., 2002; Proctor et al., 2002; Linge et al., 2001; Wang et al., 2001). Speleothems have proven their potential to create a terrestrial high-resolution paleo-temperature record (Schwarcz, 1986). The advantage of caves for paleoclimatic studies is the yearly stability of climatic conditions in the cave (Jirnénez de Cisneros et al., 2003). Observations have shown that the temperature in any deep cave is clase to the mean annual temperature of the surrounding (Schwarcz et al., 1976; Yonge et al., 1985). This makes speleothems a successful too! paleo-temperature reconstruction (Hendy and Wilson, 1968). The carbonate, ofwhich the speleothem is build, can be used for stable isotope measurements (o13C and o180). Oxygen isotopes are world-wide used to reconstruct paleo-temperatures, especially for biogenic carbonate in marine cores. Precise age-dating on speleothems can be done by U-Th measurements on TIMS, which makes it possible to calculate absolute ages for the isotope record
Clustering of red galaxies around the z=1.53 quasar 3C270.1
In the paradigm of hierarchical galaxy formation, luminous radio galaxies
mark mass assembly peaks that should contain clusters of galaxies. Observations
of the z=1.53 quasar 3C270.1 with the Spitzer Space Telescope at 3.6-24 micron
and with the 6.5-m MMT in the z'- and Y-bands allow detection of potential
cluster members via photometric redshifts. Compared with nearby control fields,
there is an excess of 11 extremely red objects (EROs) at 1.33 < z_phot < 1.73,
consistent with a proto-cluster around the quasar. The spectral energy
distributions (SEDs) of 3/4 of the EROs are better fitted with passive
elliptical galaxies than withdust-reddened starbursts, and of four sources
well-detected on an archival HST snapshot image, all have undisturbed
morphologies. However, one ERO, not covered by the HST image, is a double
source with 0.8" separation on the z' image and a marginal (2sigma) 24 micron
detection indicating a dust-enshrouded starburst. The EROs are more luminous
than L* (H = -23.6 AB mag at z=1.5).Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, accepted by Ap
Lyman-alpha emission galaxies at a redshift of z = 5.7 in the FORS Deep Field
We present the results of a search for Lyman-alpha emission galaxies at z~
5.7 in the FORS Deep Field. The objective of this study is to improve the faint
end of the luminosity function of high-redshift Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies
and to derive properties of intrinsically faint Lyman-alpha emission galaxies
in the young universe. Using FORS2 at the ESO VLT and a set of special
interference filters, we identified candidates for high-redshift Lyman-alpha
galaxies. We then used FORS2 in spectroscopic mode to verify the
identifications and to study their spectral properties. The narrow-band
photometry resulted in the detection of 15 likely Lyman-alpha emission
galaxies. Spectra with an adequate exposure time could be obtained for eight
galaxies. In all these cases the presence of Lyman-alpha emission at z = 5.7
was confirmed spectroscopically. The line fluxes of the 15 candidates range
between 3 and 16 * 10^-21 Wm^-2, which corresponds to star-formation rates not
corrected for dust between 1 and 5 Msun/yr. The luminosity function derived for
our photometrically identified objects extends the published luminosity
functions of intrinsically brighter Lyman-alpha galaxies. With this technique
the study of high-redshift Lyman-alpha emission galaxies can be extended to low

Sample size calculations for the design of cluster randomized trials: A summary of methodology.
Cluster randomized trial designs are growing in popularity in, for example, cardiovascular medicine research and other clinical areas and parallel statistical developments concerned with the design and analysis of these trials have been stimulated. Nevertheless, reviews suggest that design issues associated with cluster randomized trials are often poorly appreciated and there remain inadequacies in, for example, describing how the trial size is determined and the associated results are presented. In this paper, our aim is to provide pragmatic guidance for researchers on the methods of calculating sample sizes. We focus attention on designs with the primary purpose of comparing two interventions with respect to continuous, binary, ordered categorical, incidence rate and time-to-event outcome variables. Issues of aggregate and non-aggregate cluster trials, adjustment for variation in cluster size and the effect size are detailed. The problem of establishing the anticipated magnitude of between- and within-cluster variation to enable planning values of the intra-cluster correlation coefficient and the coefficient of variation are also described. Illustrative examples of calculations of trial sizes for each endpoint type are included

models, fitting them under a working independence assumption, and using robust variance estimates
to address the association in the responses within clusters. We develop sample size criteria
within this framework, with analyses based on semiparametric Cox regression models fitted with
event times subject to right censoring. At the design stage, copula models are specified to enable
derivation of the asymptotic variance of estimators from a marginal Cox regression model
and to compute the number of clusters necessary to satisfy power requirements. Simulation studies
demonstrate the validity of the sample size formula in finite samples for a range of cluster
sizes, censoring rates and degrees of within-cluster association among event times. The power
and relative efficiency implications of copula misspecification is studied, as well as the effect of
within-cluster dependence in the censoring times. Sample size criteria and other design issues are
also addressed for the setting where the event status is only ascertained at periodic assessments

The WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey: Survey Design and First Data Release
The WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey is a survey of 240,000 emission line galaxies
in the distant universe, measured with the AAOmega spectrograph on the 3.9-m
Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT). The target galaxies are selected using
ultraviolet photometry from the GALEX satellite, with a flux limit of NUV<22.8
mag. The redshift range containing 90% of the galaxies is 0.2<z<1.0. The
primary aim of the survey is to precisely measure the scale of baryon acoustic
oscillations (BAO) imprinted on the spatial distribution of these galaxies at
look-back times of 4-8 Gyrs. Detailed forecasts indicate the survey will
measure the BAO scale to better than 2% and the tangential and radial acoustic
wave scales to approximately 3% and 5%, respectively.
This paper provides a detailed description of the survey and its design, as
well as the spectroscopic observations, data reduction, and redshift
measurement techniques employed. It also presents an analysis of the properties
of the target galaxies, including emission line diagnostics which show that
they are mostly extreme starburst galaxies, and Hubble Space Telescope images,
which show they contain a high fraction of interacting or distorted systems. In
conjunction with this paper, we make a public data release of data for the

Each to their own: skeletal muscles of different function use different biochemical strategies during aestivation at high temperature
Preservation of muscle morphology depends on a continuing regulatory balance between molecules that protect and molecules that damage muscle structural integrity. Excessive disruption of the biochemical balance that favours reactive oxygen species (ROS) in disused muscles may lead to oxidative stress, which in turn is associated with increased atrophic or apoptotic signalling and/or oxidative damage to the muscle and thus muscle disuse atrophy. Increases in the rate of oxygen consumption likely increase the overall generation of ROS in vivo. Temperature-induced increases in oxygen consumption rate occur in some muscles of ectotherms undergoing prolonged muscular disuse during aestivation. In the green-striped burrowing frog, Cyclorana alboguttata, both large jumping and small non-jumping muscles undergo atrophy seemingly commensurate with their rate of oxygen consumption during aestivation. However, because the extent of atrophy in these muscles is not enhanced at higher temperatures, despite a temperature-sensitive rate of oxygen consumption in the jumping muscle, we proposed that muscles are protected by biochemical means that, when mobilised at higher temperatures, inhibit atrophy. We proposed that the biochemical response to temperature would be muscle-specific. We examined the effect of temperature on the antioxidant and heat shock protein systems and determined the extent of oxidative damage to lipids and proteins in two functionally different skeletal muscles, the gastrocnemius (jumping muscle) and the iliofibularis (non-jumping muscle), by aestivating frogs at 24 and 30 degrees C for 6. months. We assayed small molecule antioxidant capacity, mitochondrial and cytosolic superoxide dismutase activities and Hsp70 concentrations to show that protective mechanisms in disused muscles are differentially regulated with respect to both temperature and aestivation. High aestivation temperature results in an antioxidant response in the metabolically temperature-sensitive jumping muscle. We assayed lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation to show that oxidative damage is apparent during aestivation and its pattern is muscle-specific, but unaffected by temperature. Consideration is given to how the complex responses of muscle biochemistry inform the different strategies muscles may use in regulating their oxidative environment during extended disuse and disuse at high temperature
Conceptualizing leadership perceptions as attitudes:using attitude theory to further the understanding of the relation between leadership and outcomes
Leadership is one of the most examined factors in relation to understanding employee wellbeing and performance. While there are disparate approaches to studying leadership, they share a common assumption that perceptions of a leader's behavior determine reactions to the leader. The concept of leadership perception is poorly understood in most theoretical approaches. To address this, we propose that there are many benefits from examining leadership perceptions as an attitude towards the leader. In this review, we show how research examining a number of aspects of attitudes (content, structure and function) can advance understanding of leadership perceptions and how these affect work-related outcomes. Such a perspective provides a more multi-faceted understanding of leadership perceptions than previously envisaged and this can provide a more detailed understanding of how such perceptions affect outcomes. In addition, we examine some of the main theoretical and methodological implications of viewing leadership perceptions as attitudes to the wider leadership area. The cross-fertilization of research from the attitudes literature to understanding leadership perceptions provides new insights into leadership processes and potential avenues for further research.
