Topological susceptibility at zero and finite temperature in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model
We consider the three flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with the 't Hooft
interaction incorporating the U(1)_A anomaly. In order to set the coupling
strength of the 't Hooft term, we employ the topological susceptibility
instead of the eta' meson mass. The value for is taken from lattice
simulations. We also calculate at finite temperature within the model.
Comparing it with the lattice data, we extract information about the behavior
of the U(1)_A anomaly at finite temperature. We conclude that within the
present framework, the effective restoration of the U(1)_A symmetry does not
necessarily take place even at high temperature where the chiral symmetry is

Development of portable NMR polarimeter system for polarized HD target
A portable NMR polarimeter system has been developed to measure the
polarization of a polarized Hydrogen-Deuteride (HD) target for hadron
photoproduction experiments at SPring-8. The polarized HD target is produced at
the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), Osaka university and is
transported to SPring-8. The HD polarization should be monitored at both
places. We have constructed the portable NMR polarimeter system by replacing
the devices in the conventional system with the software system with PCI
eXtensions for Instrumentation (PXI). The weight of the NMR system is downsized
from 80 kg to 7 kg, and the cost is reduced to 25%. We check the performance of
the portable NMR polarimeter system. The signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio of the NMR
signal for the portable system is about 50% of that for the conventional NMR
system. This performance of the portable NMR system is proved to be compatible

MITSuME--Multicolor Imaging Telescopes for Survey and Monstrous Explosions
Development of MITSuME is reported. Two 50-cm optical telescopes have been
built at Akeno in Yamanashi prefecture and at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory
(OAO) in Okayama prefecture. Three CCD cameras for simultaneous g'RcIc
photometry are to be mounted on each focal plane, covering a wide FOV of about
30" x 30". The limiting magnitude at V is fainter than 18. In addition to these
two optical telescopes, a 91-cm IR telescope with a 1 deg x 1 deg field of view
is being built at OAO, which performs photometry in YJHK bands. These robotic
telescopes can start the observation of counterparts of a GRB within a minute
from an alert. We aim to obtain photometric redshifts exceeding 10 with these
telescopes. The performance and the current construction status of the

Deconfining Phase Transition as a Matrix Model of Renormalized Polyakov Loops
We discuss how to extract renormalized from bare Polyakov loops in SU(N)
lattice gauge theories at nonzero temperature in four spacetime dimensions.
Single loops in an irreducible representation are multiplicatively renormalized
without mixing, through a renormalization constant which depends upon both
representation and temperature. The values of renormalized loops in the four
lowest representations of SU(3) were measured numerically on small, coarse
lattices. We find that in magnitude, condensates for the sextet and octet loops
are approximately the square of the triplet loop. This agrees with a large
expansion, where factorization implies that the expectation values of loops in
adjoint and higher representations are just powers of fundamental and
anti-fundamental loops. For three colors, numerically the corrections to the
large relations are greatest for the sextet loop, ; these
represent corrections of for N=3. The values of the renormalized
triplet loop can be described by an SU(3) matrix model, with an effective
action dominated by the triplet loop. In several ways, the deconfining phase
transition for N=3 appears to be like that in the matrix model of

The Magnetoelectric Effect in Transition Metal Oxides: Insights and the Rational Design of New Materials from First Principles
The search for materials displaying a large magnetoelectric effect has
occupied researchers for many decades. The rewards could include not only
advanced electronics technologies, but also fundamental insights concerning the
dielectric and magnetic properties of condensed matter. In this article, we
focus on the magnetoelectric effect in transition metal oxides and review the
manner in which first-principles calculations have helped guide the search for
(and increasingly, predicted) new materials and shed light on the microscopic
