In edition: artistsā multiples in an academic library
The artist's multiple is difficult to define, but could be described as an original artwork produced in an edition of two or more. At Chelsea College of Art and Design, the artists' multiples collection was developed to give students first-hand experience of original work by artists, something that is rarely included in the special collections of art libraries. This article examines the history and development of this unique collection of objects, and how it has enabled the library to play an active part in the life and work of the academic community it serves
Ephemera in the art library
Art libraries acquire a large amount of ephemeral material which creates a unique resource on the history of contemporary art. Librarians have to decide what should be retained, how it should be stored, and how the material can best be accessed. Increasingly there is pressure to digitise in order to promote collections, but how effective this process is in terms of ephemeral material remains a real question. A survey of prominent collections in London and New York has helped to inform future plans for the ephemera held by the library at Chelsea College of Art & Design
The turbulent burning velocity of iso-octane/air mixtures
Turbulent burning velocities of iso-octane air mixtures have been measured for expanding flame kernels within a turbulent combustion bomb. High speed schlieren images were used to derive turbulent burning velocity. Turbulent velocity measurements were made at uā = 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0 m/s, equivalence ratios of 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 and pressures of P = 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 MPa. The turbulent burning velocity was found to increase with time and radius from ignition, this was attributed to turbulent flame development. The turbulent burning velocity increased with increasing rms turbulent velocity, and with pressure; although differences were found in the magnitude of this increase for different turbulent velocities. Generally, raising the equivalence ratio resulted in enhanced turbulent burning velocity, excepting measurements made at the lowest turbulent velocity. The results obtained in this study have been compared with those evaluated for a number turbulent burning velocity correlations and the differences are discussed
Laser ignition of iso-octane air aerosols
Iso-octane aerosols in air have been ignited with a focused Nd:YAG laser at pressures and temperatures of 100kPa and 270K and imaged using schlieren photography. The aerosol was generated using the Wilson cloud chamber technique. The droplet diameter, gas phase equivalence ratio and droplet number density were determined. The input laser energy and overall equivalence ratio were varied. For 270mJ pulse energies initial breakdown occurred at a number of sites along the laser beam axis. From measurements of the shock wave velocity it was found that energy was not deposited into the sites evenly. At pulse energies of 32mJ a single ignition site was observed. Overall fuel lean flames were observed to locally extinguish, however both stoichiometric and fuel rich flames were ignited. The minimum ignition energy was found to depend on the likelihood of a droplet existing at the focus of the laser beam

"Is that normal?" What the Experiences of Apprentices Teach us about Practice and Policy
This study exposes the absence of apprentice voice in debates about quality, and explains the implications from a theoretical position of learning as a social construct. The early years of the 21st century witnessed a rapid growth in apprenticeships in England, with starts rising from 167,700 in 2002/3 to 375,800 in 2017/18. Ownership of the definition of apprenticeships is a contested matter with successive governments claiming that apprenticeships provide an alternative to university, and a cure for national skills shortages, social inequality and youth unemployment. Quality is conceived and measured using narrow economic- and employment-centred metrics. How apprentices conceive quality and success is largely unknown or ignored. I make the case that it is only by understanding the experiences and views of apprentices that we can start to make any headway into improving the quality of delivery.
I interviewed 33 apprentices to determine what it is like to ādoā an apprenticeship and to ābeā an apprentice. The ethnographic methodology used champions the apprenticesā points-of-view, and allows me to discuss my findings in the context of theories about knowledge, identity, relationships, choice and power. The first apprentice that I interviewed wanted to know how her experiences compared with those of others, and the phrase, āIs that normal?ā became a leitmotif for the study, exposing the myth of a normal apprentice, upon which, much current policy is based.
The original contribution of this thesis is to fill a gap in current knowledge, and provide a new apprentice-centred model to make sense of the apprentice experience. The thesis concludes with a challenge to those who create apprenticeship policy and deliver training, to develop a new and broader set of quality measures. I contend that adopting a more apprentice-centred approach will enhance the value of apprenticeships, and this has significant implications for employment and training
