    Waveform load analysis for fatigue in the printed PLA

    Additive manufacturing is fast becoming a key process to manufacture a customized design with complex geometry and one process usually employed is based on the fused filament fabrication. Up to now this method is typically employed for rapid prototyping, it is therefore their mechanical strength is lower than the components manufactured using conventional casting process. It is well known that most failures are happened under repeated loads; therefore, a functional component mandatory needs to reach endurance strength under cyclic loads. Hence, this study set out to clarify several aspects of filament fused test specimens to determine their effect on accumulated damage to then predict component life under repeated loads. In this study is considered three waveforms such as sinusoidal, triangular and square, where it is observed that the square waveform provides the most severe loads. This study therefore makes a major contribution to research on the fatigue properties of parts manufactured using fused filament by reporting their fatigue behaviour under different fatigue load conditions. It would give a better understanding to improve the mechanical prediction of PLA, thereby it might be used to manufacture a functional component instead of only a prototype or spare part

    Enhancement of Fatigue Life of Polylactic Acid Components through Post-Printing Heat Treatment

    To reduce the carbon footprint of manufacturing processes, it is necessary to reduce the number of stages in the development process. To this end, integrating additive manufacturing processes with three-dimensional (3D) printing makes it possible to eliminate the need to use tooling for component manufacturing. Furthermore, using 3D printing allows the generation of complex models to optimize different components, reducing the development time and realizing lightweight structures that can be applied in different industries, such as the mobility industry. Printing process parameters have been studied to improve the mechanical properties of printed items. In this regard, although the failure of most structural components occurs under dynamic load, the majority of the evaluations are quasistatic. This work highlights an improvement in fatigue strength under dynamic loads in 3D-printed components through heat treatment. The fatigue resistance was improved regarding the number of cycles and the dispersion of results. This allows 3D-printed polylactic acid components to be structurally used, and increasing their reliability allows their evolution from a prototype to a functional component

    Large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in nanometer-thick epitaxial graphene/co/heavy metal heterostructures for spin-orbitronics devices

    Nanometer-thick epitaxial Co films intercalated between graphene (Gr) and a heavy metal (HM) substrate are promising systems for the development of spin-orbitronic devices due to their large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). A combination of theoretical modeling and experiments reveals the origin of the PMA and explains its behavior as a function of the Co thickness. High quality epitaxial Gr/Co-n/HM(111) (HM = Pt,Ir) heterostructures are grown by intercalation below graphene, which acts as a surfactant that kinetically stabilizes the pseudomorphic growth of highly perfect Co face-centered tetragonal (fct) films, with a reduced number of stacking faults as the only structural defect observable by high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) measurements show that such heterostructures present PMA up to large Co critical thicknesses of about 4 nm (20 ML) and 2 nm (10 ML) for Pt and Ir substrates, respectively. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements show an inverse power law of the anisotropy of the orbital moment with Co thickness, reflecting its interfacial nature, that changes sign at about the same critical values. First principles calculations show that, regardless of the presence of graphene, ideal Co fct films on HM buffers do not sustain PMAs beyond around 6 mLs due to the in-plane contribution of the inner bulk-like Co layers. The large experimental critical thicknesses sustaining PMA can only be retrieved by the inclusion of structural defects that promote a local hcp stacking such as twin boundaries or stacking faults. Remarkably, a layer resolved analysis of the orbital momentum anisotropy reproduces its interfacial nature, and reveals that the Gr/Co interface contribution is comparable to that of the Co/Pt(Ir).Financial support from MINECO (Grant Nos.     “Estudiantes a la ópera” es un proyecto pedagógico promovido por el Teatro Real de Madrid y coordinado por el Departamento de Música del I.E.S. Calatalifa de Villaviciosa de Odón, en el que también colabora la Biblioteca Municipal de esta localidad. Nace con el objetivo de difundir la música escénica entre los estudiantes de Enseñanza Secundaria. De carácter eminentemente interdisciplinar, se apoya principalmente en tres departamentos: Música, Plástica y Tecnología, aunque otras asignaturas se suman cada año a esta experiencia. Se trata de un trabajo de creación artística y técnica a partir de la investigación de una obra musical del repertorio escénico: ópera, danza o teatro musical. Los alumnos, estudian el libreto o argumento, profundizan en los personajes y su significación tratando de captar el contenido simbólico, desarrollan criterios de opinión sobre diferentes aspectos y, finalmente, realizan creaciones musicales, plásticas, tecnológicas o literarias.ES

    Evaluation of a quality improvement intervention to reduce anastomotic leak following right colectomy (EAGLE): pragmatic, batched stepped-wedge, cluster-randomized trial in 64 countries

    Background Anastomotic leak affects 8 per cent of patients after right colectomy with a 10-fold increased risk of postoperative death. The EAGLE study aimed to develop and test whether an international, standardized quality improvement intervention could reduce anastomotic leaks. Methods The internationally intended protocol, iteratively co-developed by a multistage Delphi process, comprised an online educational module introducing risk stratification, an intraoperative checklist, and harmonized surgical techniques. Clusters (hospital teams) were randomized to one of three arms with varied sequences of intervention/data collection by a derived stepped-wedge batch design (at least 18 hospital teams per batch). Patients were blinded to the study allocation. Low- and middle-income country enrolment was encouraged. The primary outcome (assessed by intention to treat) was anastomotic leak rate, and subgroup analyses by module completion (at least 80 per cent of surgeons, high engagement; less than 50 per cent, low engagement) were preplanned. Results A total 355 hospital teams registered, with 332 from 64 countries (39.2 per cent low and middle income) included in the final analysis. The online modules were completed by half of the surgeons (2143 of 4411). The primary analysis included 3039 of the 3268 patients recruited (206 patients had no anastomosis and 23 were lost to follow-up), with anastomotic leaks arising before and after the intervention in 10.1 and 9.6 per cent respectively (adjusted OR 0.87, 95 per cent c.i. 0.59 to 1.30; P = 0.498). The proportion of surgeons completing the educational modules was an influence: the leak rate decreased from 12.2 per cent (61 of 500) before intervention to 5.1 per cent (24 of 473) after intervention in high-engagement centres (adjusted OR 0.36, 0.20 to 0.64; P < 0.001), but this was not observed in low-engagement hospitals (8.3 per cent (59 of 714) and 13.8 per cent (61 of 443) respectively; adjusted OR 2.09, 1.31 to 3.31). Conclusion Completion of globally available digital training by engaged teams can alter anastomotic leak rates. Registration number: NCT04270721 (http://www.clinicaltrials.gov)
