Eulusmap: An international land resources map utilizing satellite imagery

    Get PDF
In 1972, the International Geographical Union's Commission on World Land Use Survey adopted a project for a land-use map of Europe. Such a map, under the name Eulusmap was started earlier under sponsorship of several government offices in Hungary. Although there was great response from a number of contributors in many countries, it became evident by mid-1974 that the map would contain gaps and some inaccuracies unless additional data sources were utilized. By then, the satellite Landsat-1 had obtained imagery of most of Europe. Using theme extraction techniques, the map was completed in draft form and portions of it displayed at the 23d International Geographical Congress in Moscow during July 1976. Printing of the completed map was accomplished in May 1978

Procedure for locating 10 km UTM grid on Alabama County general highway maps

    Get PDF
Each county highway map has a geographic grid of degrees and tens of minutes in both longitude and latitude in the margins and within the map as intersection crosses. These will be used to locate the universal transverse mercator (UTM) grid at 10 km intervals. Since the maps used may have stretched or shrunk in height and/or width, interpolation should be done between the 10 min intersections when possible. A table of UTM coordinates of 10 min intersections is required and included. In Alabama, all eastings are referred to a false easting of 500,000 m at 87 deg W longitude (central meridian, CM)

Regional environmental analysis and management: New techniques for current problems

    Get PDF
Advances in data acquisition and processing procedures for regional environmental analysis are discussed. Automated and semi-automated techniques employing Earth Resources Technology Satellite data and conventional data sources are presented. Experiences are summarized. The ERTS computer compatible tapes provide a very complete and flexible record of earth resources data and represent a viable medium to enhance regional environmental analysis research

Agribusiness and space: No limits to growth

    Get PDF
Technological developments responding to world food needs are examined. It is noted that agribusiness technology has become more space-related in recent years. Although crops forecasting and improvements in yield (the green revolution) were developed prior to the space era, it would be unthinkable today to ignore the contributions of operational meteorological and communications satellites and experimental Earth observation satellites in agribusiness. Space-driven communications now permit national agribusiness database management networks, with a significant portion of the data being space-derived. In demonstration experiments, space communications were shown to improve those aspects of the food problem related to education and communications

Lisbeth Salander Lost In Translation - An Exploration of the English Version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Abstract This thesis sets out to explore the cultural differences between Sweden and the United States by examining the substantial changes made to Men Who Hate Women, including the change in the book’s title in English to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. My thesis focuses in particular on changes in the depiction of the female protagonist: Lisbeth Salander. Unfortunately we do not have access to translator Steven T. Murray’s original translation, though we know that the English publisher and rights holder Christopher MacLehose chose to enhance Larsson’s work in order to make the novel more interesting for English-speaking readers, which resulted in Murray translating under the pseudonym Reg Keeland as he did not agree to the translation made by MacLehose and Knopf. Furthermore, this thesis touches on the ethics of translation, and will likewise argue the importance of facilitating a dialog concerning misogyny and rape culture

    Ultra-ortodoksi og pluralisme

One of the central characteristics of the thinking and political practice of Israeli Ultra-Orthodox or Haredim is their rejection of internal Jewish pluralism, an attitude connected to their confrontational strategy towards the cultural aspects of modernity and consequently of modern interpretations of Judaism as found in Reform and Conservative Judaism. The following article is a description and analysis of the treatment of subjects related to Reform and Conservative Judaism in the Haredi press in particular in the ‘Lithuanian’ daily newspaper Yated Neeman as well as in the publications of its founder, the late Rabbi Eliezer Menahem Shakh. The subject is often treated extensively in editorials and articles in the Haredi press, when special events in Reform or Conservative communities in or outside Israel are catching the attention of the editorial board or subjects related to these communities arrive at the political agenda of the State of Israel. Series of articles have e.g. been caused by High Court decisions ordering the authorities not to prevent Reform and Conservative representation in the local religious councils or to finance theirs institutions etc. The articles bear the imprint of a strikingly demonizing attitude towards the Non-Orthodox movements. This attitude is derived from the premodern Haredi view that the content of their belies constitutes an absolute truth which has only one legitimate interpretation and that only this particular interpretation rightfully can bear the name Judaism

This article is analyzing the election campaigns in Israel conducted by the Haredi parties, the Ashkenazi party United Torah Judaism. Aguat Israel and Degel ha-Torah and its Sephardic counterpart Shas. The article focuses on the authority and the blessings by various types of holy men as well as on their amulets and on the importance attributed to them in the campaigns. The campaigns to be analyzed are those conducted up to the elections from 1988 to 2003. Of special interest however are the campaigns in 1996 and 1999 for the following reasons: The 1996 campaign was remarkable because the distribution of amulets by Shas was its very center, and the 1999 campaign because although amulets here played a smaller part than in 1996 other “religious effects” such as blessings by different types of holy men and use of their authority played a very prominent part in the campaigns of both Haredi parties
