    Measurement of D+- and D0 production in deep inelastic scattering using a lifetime tag at HERA

    The production of D-+/-- and D-0-mesons has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 133.6 pb(-1). The measurements cover the kinematic range 5 < Q(2) < 1000 GeV2, 0.02 < y < 0.7, 1.5 < p(T)(D) < 15 GeV and |eta(D)| < 1.6. Combinatorial background to the D-meson signals is reduced by using the ZEUS microvertex detector to reconstruct displaced secondary vertices. Production cross sections are compared with the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD, which is found to describe the data well. Measurements are extrapolated to the full kinematic phase space in order to obtain the open-charm contribution, F-2(c (c) over bar), to the proton structure function, F-2

    Multi-Leptons with High Transverse Momentum at HERA

    18 pages, 3 figures, revised version with small textual changesEvents with at least two high transverse momentum leptons (electrons or muons) are studied using the H1 and ZEUS detectors at HERA with an integrated luminosity of 0.94 fb^{-1}. The observed numbers of events are in general agreement with the Standard Model predictions. Seven di- and tri-lepton events are observed in e^+p collision data with a scalar sum of the lepton transverse momenta above 100 GeV while 1.94+-0.17 events are expected. Such events are not observed in e^-p collisions for which 1.19+-0.12 are predicted. Total visible and differential di-electron and di-muon photoproduction cross sections are extracted in a restricted phase space dominated by photon-photon collisions

    A fully compensating uranium-scintillator calorimeter was constructed for the ZEUS detector at HERA. Several of the barrel calorimeter modules were subjected to beam tests at Fermilab before shipping them to DESY for installation. The calibrations of the modules used beams of electrons and hadrons, measuring the uniformity of the response, and checking the resolution. The runs also provided opportunity to test a large fraction of the actual ZEUS calorimeter readout system in an integrated beam environment more than one year before HERA turn on. The experiment utilized two computer controlled mechanical structures. one of which was capable of holding up to four modules in order to study shower containment, and a magnetic spectrometer with a high resolution beam tracking system. During two running periods, beams of 6 to 110 GeV containing e, mu, pi, and pBAR were used. The results show energy resolutions of 35%/square-root E for hadrons and 19%/square-root E for electrons, uniformities at the 1% level, energy nonlinearity less than 1%, and equal response for electrons and hadrons

    Production of Excited Charm and Charm-Strange Mesons at HERA

    The production of excited charm, D 1(2420)0 and D 2 * (2460)0, and charm-strange, D s1(2536)±, mesons in ep collisions was measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 126 pb -1. Masses, widths and helicity parameters were determined. The measured yields were converted to the rates of c quarks hadronising as a given excited charm meson and to the ratios of the dominant D 2 * (2460)0 and D s1(2536) ± branching fractions. A search for the radially excited charm meson, D *(2640)±, was also performed. The results are compared with those measured previously and with theoretical expectations

    Search for pair production of third-generation scalar leptoquarks and top squarks in proton-proton collisions at v root s=8 TeV

    A search for pair production of third-generation scalar leptoquarks and supersymmetric top quark partners, top squarks, in final states involving tau leptons and bottom quarks is presented. The search uses events from a data sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb(-1), collected with the CMS detector at the LHC with root s = 8 TeV. The number of observed events is found to be in agreement with the expected standard model background. Third-generation scalar leptoquarks with masses below 740 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming a 100% branching fraction for the leptoquark decay to a tau lepton and a bottom quark. In addition, this mass limit applies directly to top squarks decaying via an R-parity violating coupling. lambda(') (333). The search also considers a similar signature from top squarks undergoing a chargino-mediated decay involving the Rparity violating coupling. lambda(')(3jk). Each top squark decays to a tau lepton, a bottom quark, and two light quarks. Top squarks in this model with masses below 580 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level. The constraint on the leptoquark mass is the most stringent to date, and this is the first search for top squarks decaying via. lambda(')(3jk)

    Search for a standard model-like Higgs boson in the mu(+)mu(-) and e(+)e(-) decay channels at the LHC

    A search is presented for a standard model-like Higgs boson decaying to the mu(+)mu(-) or e(+)e(-) final states based on proton-proton collisions recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of 5.0 fb(-1) at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and 19.7 fb(-1) at 8 TeV for the mu(+)mu(-) search, and of 19.7 fb(-1) at 8 TeV for the e(+)e(-) search. Upper limits on the production cross section times branching fraction at the 95% confidence level are reported for Higgs boson masses in the range from 120 to 150 GeV. For a Higgs boson with a mass of 125 GeV decaying to mu(+)mu(-), the observed (expected) upper limit on the production rate is found to be 7.4 (6.5(-1.9)(+2.8)) times the standard model value. This corresponds to an upper limit on the branching fraction of 0.0016. Similarly, for e(+)e(-), an upper limit of 0.0019 is placed on the branching fraction, which is approximate to 3.7 x 10(5) times the standard model value. These results, together with recent evidence of the 125 GeV boson coupling to tau-leptons with a larger branching fraction consistent with the standard model, confirm that the leptonic couplings of the new boson are not flavour-universal

    A measurement of inclusive ZZ production cross section and constraints on anomalous triple gauge couplings in proton-proton collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 8 TeV are presented. A data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.6 inverse-femtobarns was collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The measurements are performed in the leptonic decay modes ZZllllZZ \to lll'l', where l=e,μl = e, \mu and l=e,μ,τl' = e, \mu, \tau. The measured total cross section, σ(ppZZ)=7.7±0.5(stat.)0.4+0.5(syst.)±0.4(theo.)±0.2(lum.)pb\sigma (pp \to ZZ) = 7.7 \pm 0.5 (stat.)^{+0.5}_{-0.4} (syst.) \pm 0.4 (theo.) \pm 0.2 (lum.) pb for both Z bosons produced in the mass range mZm_Z within 60 and 120 GeV, is consistent with standard model predictions. Differential cross sections are measured and well described by the theoretical predictions. The invariant mass distribution of the four-lepton system is used to set limits on anomalous ZZZ and ZZγ\gamma couplings at the 95% confidence level: f4Zf_4^Z in (-0.004,+0.004), f5Zf_5^Z in (-0.005,+0.005), f4γf_4^\gamma in (-0.004,+0.004), and f5γf_5^\gamma in (-0.005,+0.005)

    The first measurement of the cross section ratio sigma(t (t) over barb (b) over bar)/sigma(t (t) over bar jj) is presented using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.6 fb(-1) collected in pp collisions at root s = 8 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. Events with two leptons (e or mu) and four reconstructed jets, including two identified as b quark jets, in the final state are selected. The ratio is determined for a minimum jet transverse momentum p(T) of both 20 and 40 GeV/c. The measured ratio is 0.022 +/- 0.003 (stat) +/- 0.005 (syst) for p(T) > 20GeV/c. The absolute cross sections sigma(t (t) over barb (b) over bar) and sigma(t (t) over bar jj) are also measured. The measured ratio for p(T) > 40 GeV/c is compatible with a theoretical quantum chromodynamics calculation at next-to-leading order. (C) 2015 CERN for the benefit of the CMS Collaboration
