Evaluating the Effect of Chemical Digestion Treatments on Polystyrene Microplastics: Recommended Updates to Chemical Digestion Protocols

    Get PDF
Establishing the toxicity and exposure consequences of microplastics (MPs) on marine organisms relies on the nondestructive isolation of plastics from biological matrices. MPs are commonly extracted from these matrices by chemical digestion using alkali (e.g., potassium hydroxide (KOH) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH)), oxidative (e.g., hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)) and/or acidic (e.g., nitric acid (HNO3)) reagents. Although these digestion conditions can be highly effective for MP extraction, they can also react with the plastics. This can attribute an inaccurate representation of plastic contamination by altering MP visual characteristics (size, shape, color), thereby impeding identification and potentially returning erroneous numbers of ingested particles. In this study, the degradative impacts are assessed of the routinely applied digestion reagents (i) KOH, (ii) NaOH, (iii) H2O2, and (iv)HNO3 on polystyrene (PS) based MPs sized between 200 μm and 5 mm. Degradation of the PS MPs is evaluated using FT-IR, gel permeation chromatography, NMR, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and microscopy. These studies reveal HNO3 to be the most destructive for PS MPs, while the alkali and oxidative reagents result in negligible changes in plastic properties. These results are recommended to be used as a guideline to update current protocols to ensure the nondestructive treatment of MPs

Extensive Sheep and Goat Production: The Role of Novel Technologies towards Sustainability and Animal Welfare

    Get PDF
New technologies have been recognized as valuable in controlling, monitoring, and managing farm animal activities. It makes it possible to deepen the knowledge of animal behavior and improve animal welfare and health, which has positive implications for the sustainability of animal production. In recent years, successful technological developments have been applied in intensive farming systems; however, due to challenging conditions that extensive pasture-based systems show, technology has been more limited. Nevertheless, awareness of the available technological solutions for extensive conditions can increase the implementation of their adoption among farmers and researchers. In this context, this review addresses the role of different technologies applied to sheep and goat production in extensive systems. Examples related to precision livestock farming, omics, thermal stress, colostrum intake, passive immunity, and newborn survival are presented; biomarkers of metabolic diseases and parasite resistance breeding are discussed

Extension to order β23\beta^{23} of the high-temperature expansions for the spin-1/2 Ising model on the simple-cubic and the body-centered-cubic lattices

    Get PDF
Using a renormalized linked-cluster-expansion method, we have extended to order β23\beta^{23} the high-temperature series for the susceptibility χ\chi and the second-moment correlation length ξ\xi of the spin-1/2 Ising models on the sc and the bcc lattices. A study of these expansions yields updated direct estimates of universal parameters, such as exponents and amplitude ratios, which characterize the critical behavior of χ\chi and ξ\xi. Our best estimates for the inverse critical temperatures are βcsc=0.221654(1)\beta^{sc}_c=0.221654(1) and βcbcc=0.1573725(6)\beta^{bcc}_c=0.1573725(6). For the susceptibility exponent we get γ=1.2375(6)\gamma=1.2375(6) and for the correlation length exponent we get ν=0.6302(4)\nu=0.6302(4). The ratio of the critical amplitudes of χ\chi above and below the critical temperature is estimated to be C+/C=4.762(8)C_+/C_-=4.762(8). The analogous ratio for ξ\xi is estimated to be f+/f=1.963(8)f_+/f_-=1.963(8). For the correction-to-scaling amplitude ratio we obtain aξ+/aχ+=0.87(6)a^+_{\xi}/a^+_{\chi}=0.87(6).Comment: Misprints corrected, 8 pages, latex, no figure

In connection with our research program on the development of novel anti-tubercular candidates, herein we report the design and synthesis of two different sets of indole-thiazolidinone conjugates (8a,b; 11a-d) and (14a-k; 15a-h). The target compounds were evaluated for their in vitro antibacterial and antifungal activities against selected human pathogens viz. Staphylococcus aureus (Gram positiveve), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli (Gram negative), Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Acid-fast bacteria), Aspergillus fumigates and Candida albicans (fungi). Moreover, eukaryotic cell-toxicity was tested via an integrated ex vivo drug screening model in order to evaluate the selective therapeutic index (SI) towards antimicrobial activity when microbes are growing inside primary immune cells. Also, the cytotoxicity towards a panel of cancer cell lines and human lung fibroblast normal cell line, WI-38 cells, was explored to assure their safety. Compound 15b emerged as a hit in this study with potent broad spectrum antibacterial (MIC: 0.39-0.98 µg/ml) and antifungal (MIC: 0.49-0.98 µg/ml) activities, in addition to its ability to kill mycobacteria M. aurum inside an infected macrophage model with good therapeutic window. Moreover, compound 15b displayed promising activity towards resistant bacteria strains MRSA and VRE with MIC values equal 3.90 and 7.81 µg/mL, respectively. These results suggest compound 15b as a new therapeutic lead with good selectivity for further optimization and development

EULAR recommendations for women's health and the management of family planning, assisted reproduction, pregnancy and menopause in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and/or antiphospholipid syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Develop recommendations for women's health issues and family planning in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and/or antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). METHODS: Systematic review of evidence followed by modified Delphi method to compile questions, elicit expert opinions and reach consensus. RESULTS: Family planning should be discussed as early as possible after diagnosis. Most women can have successful pregnancies and measures can be taken to reduce the risks of adverse maternal or fetal outcomes. Risk stratification includes disease activity, autoantibody profile, previous vascular and pregnancy morbidity, hypertension and the use of drugs (emphasis on benefits from hydroxychloroquine and antiplatelets/anticoagulants). Hormonal contraception and menopause replacement therapy can be used in patients with stable/inactive disease and low risk of thrombosis. Fertility preservation with gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues should be considered prior to the use of alkylating agents. Assisted reproduction techniques can be safely used in patients with stable/inactive disease; patients with positive antiphospholipid antibodies/APS should receive anticoagulation and/or low-dose aspirin. Assessment of disease activity, renal function and serological markers is important for diagnosing disease flares and monitoring for obstetrical adverse outcomes. Fetal monitoring includes Doppler ultrasonography and fetal biometry, particularly in the third trimester, to screen for placental insufficiency and small for gestational age fetuses. Screening for gynaecological malignancies is similar to the general population, with increased vigilance for cervical premalignant lesions if exposed to immunosuppressive drugs. Human papillomavirus immunisation can be used in women with stable/inactive disease. CONCLUSIONS: Recommendations for women's health issues in SLE and/or APS were developed using an evidence-based approach followed by expert consensus

60°N was +2.0°C, relative to the 1981–2010 average value (Fig. 5.1). This marks a new high for the record. The average annual surface air temperature (SAT) anomaly for 2016 for land stations north of starting in 1900, and is a significant increase over the previous highest value of +1.2°C, which was observed in 2007, 2011, and 2015. Average global annual temperatures also showed record values in 2015 and 2016. Currently, the Arctic is warming at more than twice the rate of lower latitudes

Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
