    Effect of insertion method on knoop hardness of high viscous glass ionomer cements

    The aim of this study was to assess the Knoop hardness of three high viscous glass ionomer cements: G1 - Ketac Molar; G2 - Ketac Molar Easymix (3M ESPE) and G3 - Magic Glass ART (Vigodent). As a parallel goal, three different methods for insertion of Ketac Molar Easymix were tested: G4 - conventional spatula; G5 - commercial syringe (Centrix) and G6 - low-cost syringe. Ten specimens of each group were prepared and the Knoop hardness was determined 5 times on each specimen with a HM-124 hardness machine (25 g/30 s dwell time) after 24 h, 1 and 2 weeks. During the entire test period, the specimens were stored in liquid paraffin at 37ÂșC. Significant differences were found between G3 and G1/G2 (two-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test; p<0.01). There was no significant difference in the results among the multiple ways of insertion. The glass ionomer cement Magic Glass ART showed the lowest hardness, while the insertion technique had no significant influence on hardness

    Hydrogen addition to a commercial self-aspirating burner and assessment of a practical burner modification strategy to improve performance

OnlinePublThe ability for existing burners to operate safely and efficiently on hydrogen-blended fuels is a primary concern for the many industries looking to adopt hydrogen as an alternative fuel. This study investigates the efficacy of increasing fuel injector diameter as a simple modification strategy to extend the hydrogen-blending limits before flashback. The collateral effects of this modification are quantified with respect to a set of key performance criteria. The results show that the unmodified burner can sustain up to 50 vol% hydrogen addition before flashback. Increasing the fuel injector diameter reduces primary aeration, allowing for stable operation on up to 100% hydrogen. The flame length, visibility and radiant heat transfer properties are all increased as a result of the reduced air entrainment with a trade-off reported for NOx emissions, where, in addition to the effects of hydrogen, reducing air entrainment further increases NOx emissions.Adam J.     Abrasive wear behaviour of conventional and large-particle tungsten carbide-based cermet coatings as a function of abrasive size and type

    Abrasive wear behaviour of materials can be assessed using a wide variety of testing methods, and the relative performance of materials will tend to depend upon the testing procedure employed. In this work, two cermet type coatings have been examined, namely (i) a conventional tungsten carbide-cobalt thermally sprayed coating with a carbide size of between ∌0.3 – 5 ÎŒm and (ii) a tungsten carbide-nickel alloy weld overlay with large spherical carbides of the order of ∌50 – 140 ÎŒm in diameter (DuraStell). The wear behaviour of these two materials has been examined by the use of two abrasion tests, namely the micro-scale abrasion test using both silica and alumina abrasives (typically 2-10 ÎŒm in size), and the dry sand-rubber wheel test (ASTM G65), again with both silica and alumina abrasives (typically 180 – 300 ÎŒm in size). It was found that when the abrasive particles were of the same scale or larger than the mean free path between the hard phase particles, then the matrix phase was well protected by the hard phases. Testing (in both test types) with alumina abrasives resulted in wear of both the hard carbide phases and the matrix phases in both the thermally sprayed coating and the weld overlay, with the thermally sprayed coating exhibiting lower wear rates. The wear behaviour of the materials with the more industrially relevant silica abrasive was more complex; the thermally sprayed coating exhibited a lower wear rate than the weld overlay with the fine abrasive in the micro-scale abrasion test due to effective shielding of the matrix from abrasive action due to the fine reinforcement particle size. In contrast, with the coarser silica abrasive in the dry sand-rubber wheel test, the weld overlay with the large carbides was able to provide matrix protection with low rates of wear, whereas the thermally sprayed coating wore by fracture of the more brittle microstructure. These findings demonstrate the importance of selection of appropriate laboratory test procedures and abrasives to simulate behaviour of materials in service environments

    Performance evaluation of digital pulse position modulation for wavelength division multiplexing FSO systems impaired by interchannel crosstalk

    Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) has been proposed for fibre, intersatellite, free space and indoor optical communication systems. Digital pulse position modulation (DPPM) is a more power efficient modulation format than on-off keying (OOK) and a strong contender for the modulation of free-space systems. Although DPPM obtains this advantage in exchange for a bandwidth expansion, WDM systems using it are still potentially attractive, particularly for moderate coding levels. However, WDM systems are susceptible to interchannel crosstalk and modelling this in a WDM DPPM system is necessary. Models of varying complexity, based on simplifying assumptions, are presented and evaluated for the case of a single crosstalk wavelength. For a single crosstalk, results can be straightforwardly obtained by artificially imposing the computationally convenient constraint that frames (and thus slots also) align. Multiple crosstalk effects are additionally investigated, for the most practically relevant cases of modest coding level, and using both simulation and analytical methods. In general, DPPM maintains its sensitivity advantage over OOK even in the presence of crosstalk while predicting lower power penalty at low coding level in WDM systems

    Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results

    Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp. Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Physics Letters B.     Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

    This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio
