Functionalized up conversion rare earth nanoparticles for bio imaging of cancer cells

In recent yearsupconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs)have being investigated due to their potential applications in biomedicine such as fluorescent biolabels, among many others. The luminescence of this kind of NP's are effectively activatedby near infrared radiation (NIR) and upconvertto luminescence in the visible region. Besides, their luminescence is not faded as compared with organic dyes and fluorescent proteins. In this study, UCNPs made of Y2O3:Yb3+, Er3+ (1%, 10% mol) and Gd2O3:Yb3+, Er3+ (1%, 10% mol) were functionalized with aminosilanes and folic acid (UCNP-NH2-FA) and characterized with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and luminescence measurements. Moreover, cytotoxicity was analyzed via colorimetric assays MTT (methy-134 thiazolyltetrazolium) in two cancer cell lines: cervical adenocarcinoma cells (HeLa) and breast cancer cells MB-MDA-231. It is found that the functionalized UCNPs were non-cytotoxic in all cancer cell lines. Confocal images revealed that UCNP-NH2-FA conjugates as a target to attract cells with overexpressed folate receptor (FR). The UCNPs offer a great potential to be used as bio labels because their fluorescence was clearly localized into cell cytoplasm

Search for pair-produced long-lived neutral particles decaying to jets in the ATLAS hadronic calorimeter in ppcollisions at √s=8TeV

The ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN is used to search for the decay of a scalar boson to a pair of long-lived particles, neutral under the Standard Model gauge group, in 20.3fb−1of data collected in proton–proton collisions at √s=8TeV. This search is sensitive to long-lived particles that decay to Standard Model particles producing jets at the outer edge of the ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeter or inside the hadronic calorimeter. No significant excess of events is observed. Limits are reported on the product of the scalar boson production cross section times branching ratio into long-lived neutral particles as a function of the proper lifetime of the particles. Limits are reported for boson masses from 100 GeVto 900 GeV, and a long-lived neutral particle mass from 10 GeVto 150 GeV

Search for new phenomena in the dijet mass distribution using pp collision data at √s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
Dijet events produced in LHC proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy √s=8  TeV are studied with the ATLAS detector using the full 2012 data set, with an integrated luminosity of 20.3  fb−1. Dijet masses up to about 4.5 TeV are probed. No resonancelike features are observed in the dijet mass spectrum. Limits on the cross section times acceptance are set at the 95% credibility level for various hypotheses of new phenomena in terms of mass or energy scale, as appropriate. This analysis excludes excited quarks with a mass below 4.06 TeV, color-octet scalars with a mass below 2.70 TeV, heavy W′ bosons with a mass below 2.45 TeV, chiral W∗ bosons with a mass below 1.75 TeV, and quantum black holes with six extra space-time dimensions with threshold mass below 5.66 TeV

A dataset of acoustic measurements from soundscapes collected worldwide during the COVID-19 pandemic

Political responses to the COVID-19 pandemic led to changes in city soundscapes around the globe. From March to October 2020, a consortium of 261 contributors from 35 countries brought together by the Silent Cities project built a unique soundscape recordings collection to report on local acoustic changes in urban areas. We present this collection here, along with metadata including observational descriptions of the local areas from the contributors, open-source environmental data, open-source confinement levels and calculation of acoustic descriptors. We performed a technical validation of the dataset using statistical models run on a subset of manually annotated soundscapes. Results confirmed the large-scale usability of ecoacoustic indices and automatic sound event recognition in the Silent Cities soundscape collection. We expect this dataset to be useful for research in the multidisciplinary field of environmental sciences

Discovery and characterization of an unknown blue-green Maya pigment: Veszelyite

Blue-green mosaic and polychrome masks and funerary offerings from the royal tombs of Calakmul, Mexico, were analysed by scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE). This led to the first identification of the use of veszelyite, a rare hydrated copper-zinc phosphate, as green pigment. Analyses of a geological sample of this mineral have been done to confirm the characterization of this Mayan pigment, which might help determine pre-Columbian trade routes of precious and luxury objects in the ancient Maya Classic period (ad 250-800)
