Formalization of Transform Methods using HOL Light
Transform methods, like Laplace and Fourier, are frequently used for
analyzing the dynamical behaviour of engineering and physical systems, based on
their transfer function, and frequency response or the solutions of their
corresponding differential equations. In this paper, we present an ongoing
project, which focuses on the higher-order logic formalization of transform
methods using HOL Light theorem prover. In particular, we present the
motivation of the formalization, which is followed by the related work. Next,
we present the task completed so far while highlighting some of the challenges
faced during the formalization. Finally, we present a roadmap to achieve our
objectives, the current status and the future goals for this project.Comment: 15 Pages, CICM 201
Classical and Quantized Tensionless Strings
{}From the ordinary tensile string we derive a geometric action for the
tensionless () string and discuss its symmetries and field equations. The
Weyl symmetry of the usual string is shown to be replaced by a global
space-time conformal symmetry in the limit. We present the explicit
expressions for the generators of this group in the light-cone gauge. Using
these, we quantize the theory in an operator form and require the conformal
symmetry to remain a symmetry of the quantum theory. Modulo details concerning
zero-modes that are discussed in the paper, this leads to the stringent
restriction that the physical states should be singlets under space-time
diffeomorphisms, hinting at a topological theory. We present the details of the
calculation that leads to this conclusion.Comment: 34 pages, Latex, USITP 93-1
Worldsheet Instantons and a Null String Limit of Born-Infeld Theory
For a superstring theory in four spacetime dimensions, we propose a
modification of the Born-Infeld action that possesses a well-defined
tensionless limit. We interpret this as describing the effective target space
dynamics of null strings on a D3-brane. We argue that such a modification can
be induced by nonperturbative contributions from instantons in the worldsheet
sigma-model describing string propagation on the brane.Comment: 11 pages; Comments and references adde
Statistical M-Estimation and Consistency in Large Deformable Models for Image Warping
The problem of defining appropriate distances between shapes or images and modeling the variability of natural images by group transformations is at the heart of modern image analysis. A current trend is the study of probabilistic and statistical aspects of deformation models, and the development of consistent statistical procedure for the estimation of template images. In this paper, we consider a set of images randomly warped from a mean template which has to be recovered. For this, we define an appropriate statistical parametric model to generate random diffeomorphic deformations in two-dimensions. Then, we focus on the problem of estimating the mean pattern when the images are observed with noise. This problem is challenging both from a theoretical and a practical point of view. M-estimation theory enables us to build an estimator defined as a minimizer of a well-tailored empirical criterion. We prove the convergence of this estimator and propose a gradient descent algorithm to compute this M-estimator in practice. Simulations of template extraction and an application to image clustering and classification are also provided
The No-Hair Conjecture in 2D Dilaton Supergravity
We study two dimensional dilaton gravity and supergravity following
hamiltonian methods. Firstly, we consider the structure of constraints of 2D
dilaton gravity and then the 2D dilaton supergravity is obtained taking the
squere root of the bosonic constraints. We integrate exactly the equations of
motion in both cases and we show that the solutions of the equation of motion
of 2D dilaton supergravity differs from the solutions of 2D dilaton gravity
only by boundary conditions on the fermionic variables, i.e. the black holes of
2D dilaton supergravity theory are exactly the same black holes of 2D bosonic
dilaton gravity modulo supersymmetry transformations. This result is the
bidimensional analogue of the no-hair theorem for supergravity.Comment: Plain Tex, 19pp, IPNO-TH 93/2
A questionnaire to collect unintended effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation: A consensus based approach
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been widely used in both clinical and research practice. However, TMS might induce unintended sensations and undesired effects as well as serious adverse effects. To date, no shared forms are available to report such unintended effects. This study aimed at developing a questionnaire enabling reporting of TMS unintended effects. A Delphi procedure was applied which allowed consensus among TMS experts. A steering committee nominated a number of experts to be involved in the Delphi procedure. Three rounds were conducted before reaching a consen-sus. Afterwards, the questionnaire was publicized on the International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology website to collect further suggestions by the wider scientific community. A last Delphi round was then conducted to obtain consensus on the suggestions collected during the publiciza-tion and integrate them in the questionnaire. The procedure resulted in a questionnaire, that is the TMSens_Q, applicable in clinical and research settings. Routine use of the structured TMS questionnaire and standard reporting of unintended TMS effects will help to monitor the safety of TMS, particularly when applying new protocols. It will also improve the quality of data collection as well as the interpre-tation of experimental findings.(c) 2022 International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology. Published by Elsevier B.V. International ocean discovery program expedition 372 preliminary report: Creeping gas hydrate slides and Hikurangi LWD
International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 372 combined two research topics, slow slip events (SSEs) on subduction faults (IODP Proposal 781A-Full) and actively deforming gas hydrate-bearing landslides (IODP Proposal 841-APL). Our study area on the Hikurangi margin, east of the coast of New Zealand, provided unique locations for addressing both research topics.SSEs at subduction zones are an enigmatic form of creeping fault behavior. They typically occur on subduction zones at depths beyond the capabilities of ocean floor drilling. However, at the northern Hikurangi subduction margin they are among the best-documented and shallowest on Earth. Here, SSEs may extend close to the trench, where clastic and pelagic sediments about 1.0-1.5 km thick overlie the subducting, seamount-studded Hikurangi Plateau. Geodetic data show that these SSEs recur about every 2 years and are associated with measurable seafloor displacement. The northern Hikurangi subduction margin thus provides an excellent setting to use IODP capabilities to discern the mechanisms behind slow slip fault behaviour
Measurement of the cross-section and charge asymmetry of bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at TeV with the ATLAS detector
This paper presents measurements of the and cross-sections and the associated charge asymmetry as a
function of the absolute pseudorapidity of the decay muon. The data were
collected in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with
the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to a total integrated luminosity
of 20.2~\mbox{fb^{-1}}. The precision of the cross-section measurements
varies between 0.8% to 1.5% as a function of the pseudorapidity, excluding the
1.9% uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The charge asymmetry is measured
with an uncertainty between 0.002 and 0.003. The results are compared with
predictions based on next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations with various
parton distribution functions and have the sensitivity to discriminate between
them.Comment: 38 pages in total, author list starting page 22, 5 figures, 4 tables,

Search for chargino-neutralino production with mass splittings near the electroweak scale in three-lepton final states in √s=13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for supersymmetry through the pair production of electroweakinos with mass splittings near the electroweak scale and decaying via on-shell W and Z bosons is presented for a three-lepton final state. The analyzed proton-proton collision data taken at a center-of-mass energy of √s=13 TeV were collected between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. A search, emulating the recursive jigsaw reconstruction technique with easily reproducible laboratory-frame variables, is performed. The two excesses observed in the 2015–2016 data recursive jigsaw analysis in the low-mass three-lepton phase space are reproduced. Results with the full data set are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations. They are interpreted to set exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level on simplified models of chargino-neutralino pair production for masses up to 345 GeV
