    The electrokinetic impact on heavy metals remediation of Tasik Chini iron ore mine tailings, at Pahang state, Peninsular Malaysia

    The improper disposal of mining tailings is a severe threat to the surrounding environment because it comprises high concentrations of heavy metals contamination. Any precious metal extraction (mining) produces millions of tons of waste; iron ore extraction is common globally, unlike other metals extraction. The iron ore tailings contain heavy metals such as Arsenic (As), Cobalt (Co), Manganese (Mn), Lead (Pb), Copper (Cu), and Zinc (Zn). This study focuses on extracting hazardous metals such as As, V, and Zn from the disposed waste and improving its geotechnical properties. Nine samples were collected from Tasik Chini Iron ore mine, Pekan district, Pahang State, Malaysia. The initial data were prepared for elemental analysis by following ICP-OES analysis. The results showed that As, Co, Mn, Pb, Cu, and Zn concentrations exceeded the standard guidelines. In recent years, sustainable remediations techniques (EKR) have attracted extensive attention, including the electrokinetic remediation technique. The (EKR) method was applied to extract these metals from iron ore tailings specimens. A comprehensive approach of EKR shows an outstanding result where the highest removal efficiency of As was 68.4 %, Co 64.5%, Mn 67.8%, Pb 67.1%, and Cu was 64.1% and Zn 64.9% with the voltage gradient of 100 and 150 V for 4 and 8 hours constantly. Increasing the voltage gradient could be a cost-effective long-term solution for the remediation of iron ore tailings. The existing method was experienced as an effective and green technique for extracting heavy metals and recycling the mining waste materials

    BACKGROUND: Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is an essential metabolic regulator that adapts to changes in nutritional status. Severe childhood undernutrition induces elevated FGF21 levels, contributing to growth hormone (GH) resistance and subsequent linear growth attenuation potentially through a direct action on chondrocytes. METHODS: In this study, we assessed expression of the components of both GH and FGF21 pathways in rare and unique human growth plates obtained from children. Moreover, we investigated the mechanistic interplay of FGF21 on GH receptor (GHR) signaling in a heterologous system. RESULTS: Chronic FGF21 exposure increased GH-induced GHR turnover and SOCS2 expression, leading to the inhibition of STAT5 phosphorylation and IGF-1 expression. The clinical significance of FGF21 signaling through GH receptors was tested in nutritionally driven growth failure seen in very preterm (VPT) infants right after birth. VPT infants display an immediate linear growth failure after birth followed by growth catch-up. Consistent with the in vitro model data, we show that circulating FGF21 levels were elevated during deflection in linear growth compared to catch-up growth and were inversely correlated with the length velocity and circulating IGF1 levels. CONCLUSIONS: This study further supports a central role of FGF21 in GH resistance and linear growth failure and suggests a direct action on the growth plate

    Automatic eduction and statistical analysis of coherent structures in the wall region of a confine plane

    This paper describes a vortex detection algorithm used to expose and statistically characterize the coherent flow patterns observable in the velocity vector fields measured by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) in the impingement region of air curtains. The philosophy and the architecture of this algorithm are presented. Its strengths and weaknesses are discussed. The results of a parametrical analysis performed to assess the variability of the response of our algorithm to the 3 user-specified parameters in our eduction scheme are reviewed. The technique is illustrated in the case of a plane turbulent impinging twin-jet with an opening ratio of 10. The corresponding jet Reynolds number, based on the initial mean flow velocity U0 and the jet width e, is 14000. The results of a statistical analysis of the size, shape, spatial distribution and energetic content of the coherent eddy structures detected in the impingement region of this test flow are provided. Although many questions remain open, new insights into the way these structures might form, organize and evolve are given.     Improving lipid management in patients with acute coronary syndrome : The ACS Lipid EuroPath tool

    Post-acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients are at very high risk for recurrent events and mortality, despite the availability of effective pharmacological approaches. In 2018, the ACS EuroPath Survey, performed in collaboration with 555 European cardiologists, identified a sub-optimal LDL-C management in post-ACS patients. Based on these premises, the ACS EuroPath II project led to the development of a self-assessment tool to improve lipid management in these very high risk patients, taking into consideration the new 2019 ESC/EAS guidelines. This tool is built in 3 sections. The first is a questionnaire to assess the lipid management practice from the acute phase up to 12 months of follow-up. The main topics covered in this section relate to 1) acute phase (lipid management of ACS patients during hospitalization; 2) discharge (lipid management at discharge, with focus on follow-up plan); 3) follow-up (lipid management at the time of first and subsequent follow-ups); 4) referral pathway for definitive lipid management care of post-ACS patients; 5) evaluation of the achieved goal at 6 months to 1 year and key implications. The second section is a brief report to position the results against other European Union clinical practice and European guidelines. The last section allows the physician to evaluate and consider the implementation of one or more strategies, successfully developed in leading European centers, in order to optimize their own clinical practice

    The effect of the 2019 ESC/EAS dyslipidaemia guidelines on low-density lipoprotein cholesterol goal achievement in patients with acute coronary syndromes: the ACS EuroPath IV project

    AimsTo evaluate the effect of the ESC/EAS 2019 dyslipidaemia guidelines on patient management of lipid-lowering therapy in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), through a survey designed to compare post-ACS patient management in 2022 with that in 2018.MethodsOnline questionnaires focused on lipid profile and medications were used to gather data from 2650 ACS patients in 6 European countries, treated between March–June 2022 (ACS EuroPath IV survey). These data were compared with data collected from 2650 patients who participated in the ACS EuroPath I survey (conducted in 2018).ResultsLipid testing was performed in 90% of patients and was done sooner after admission in 2022 versus 2018 (mean 1.4 vs 1.7 days). Increased testing for non-HDL-C, lipoprotein(a), and ApoB was observed over time. At discharge, most patients (≥90%) were receiving lipid-lowering therapy. Prescribing patterns differed, with a higher proportion of patients receiving statin plus ezetimibe combination therapy in 2022 versus 2018 (34% vs 13%). LDL-C levels were lower in 2022 versus 2018 at admission and at 1st, 2nd and 3rd post-discharge follow-up points. More patients achieved low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) goals in 2022 versus 2018 at the first follow-up (average 14 vs 16 weeks since discharge; ConclusionLDL-C goal achievement has improved since the release of the 2019 guidelines, but lipid management in post-ACS patients remains suboptimal.Cardiolog

    GATE : a simulation toolkit for PET and SPECT

    Monte Carlo simulation is an essential tool in emission tomography that can assist in the design of new medical imaging devices, the optimization of acquisition protocols, and the development or assessment of image reconstruction algorithms and correction techniques. GATE, the Geant4 Application for Tomographic Emission, encapsulates the Geant4 libraries to achieve a modular, versatile, scripted simulation toolkit adapted to the field of nuclear medicine. In particular, GATE allows the description of time-dependent phenomena such as source or detector movement, and source decay kinetics. This feature makes it possible to simulate time curves under realistic acquisition conditions and to test dynamic reconstruction algorithms.     Survey of women's report for 33 maternal and newborn indicators: EN-BIRTH multi-country validation study.

    BACKGROUND: Population-based household surveys, notably the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) and Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS), remain the main source of maternal and newborn health data for many low- and middle-income countries. As part of the Every Newborn Birth Indicators Research Tracking in Hospitals (EN-BIRTH) study, this paper focuses on testing validity of measurement of maternal and newborn indicators around the time of birth (intrapartum and postnatal) in survey-report. METHODS: EN-BIRTH was an observational study testing the validity of measurement for selected maternal and newborn indicators in five secondary/tertiary hospitals in Bangladesh, Nepal and Tanzania, conducted from July 2017 to July 2018. We compared women's report at exit survey with the gold standard of direct observation or verification from clinical records for women with vaginal births. Population-level validity was assessed by validity ratios (survey-reported coverage: observer-assessed coverage). Individual-level accuracy was assessed by sensitivity, specificity and percent agreement. We tested indicators already in DHS/MICS as well as indicators with potential to be included in population-based surveys, notably the first validation for small and sick newborn care indicators. RESULTS: 33 maternal and newborn indicators were evaluated. Amongst nine indicators already present in DHS/MICS, validity ratios for baby dried or wiped, birthweight measured, low birthweight, and sex of baby (female) were between 0.90-1.10. Instrumental birth, skin-to-skin contact, and early initiation of breastfeeding were highly overestimated by survey-report (2.04-4.83) while umbilical cord care indicators were massively underestimated (0.14-0.22). Amongst 24 indicators not currently in DHS/MICS, two newborn contact indicators (kangaroo mother care 1.00, admission to neonatal unit 1.01) had high survey-reported coverage amongst admitted newborns and high sensitivity. The remaining indicators did not perform well and some had very high "don't know" responses. CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed low validity for collecting many maternal and newborn indicators through an exit survey instrument, even with short recall periods among women with vaginal births. Household surveys are already at risk of overload, and some specific clinical care indicators do not perform well and may be under-powered. Given that approximately 80% of births worldwide occur in facilities, routine registers should also be explored to track coverage of key maternal and newborn health interventions, particularly for clinical care

    A comprehensive 1000 Genomes-based genome-wide association meta-analysis of coronary artery disease

    Existing knowledge of genetic variants affecting risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) is largely based on genome-wide association studies (GWAS) analysis of common SNPs. Leveraging phased haplotypes from the 1000 Genomes Project, we report a GWAS meta-analysis of 185 thousand CAD cases and controls, interrogating 6.7 million common (MAF>0.05) as well as 2.7 million low frequency (0.005<MAF<0.05) variants. In addition to confirmation of most known CAD loci, we identified 10 novel loci, eight additive and two recessive, that contain candidate genes that newly implicate biological processes in vessel walls. We observed intra-locus allelic heterogeneity but little evidence of low frequency variants with larger effects and no evidence of synthetic association.     Epidemiological impact of waning immunization on a vaccinated population

    This is an epidemiological SIRV model based study that is de- signed to analyze the impact of vaccination in containing infection spread, in a 4-tiered population compartment comprised of susceptible, infected, recov- ered and vaccinated agents. While many models assume a lifelong protection through vaccination, we focus on the impact of waning immunization due to conversion of vaccinated and recovered agents back to susceptible ones. Two asymptotic states exist, the \disease-free equilibrium" and the \endemic equi- librium" and we express the transitions between these states as function of the vaccination and conversion rates and using the basic reproduction number. We nd that the vaccination of newborns and adults have dierent consequences on controlling an epidemic. Also, a decaying disease protection within the re- covered sub-population is not sucient to trigger an epidemic on the linear level. We perform simulations for a parameter set modelling a disease with waning immunization like pertussis. For a diusively coupled population, a transition to the endemic state can proceed via the propagation of a traveling infection wave, described successfully within a Fisher-Kolmogorov framework

    Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections for Higgs boson production in the diphoton decay channel at s√=8 TeV with ATLAS

    Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections are presented for Higgs boson production in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s√=8 TeV. The analysis is performed in the H → γγ decay channel using 20.3 fb−1 of data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The signal is extracted using a fit to the diphoton invariant mass spectrum assuming that the width of the resonance is much smaller than the experimental resolution. The signal yields are corrected for the effects of detector inefficiency and resolution. The pp → H → γγ fiducial cross section is measured to be 43.2 ±9.4(stat.) − 2.9 + 3.2 (syst.) ±1.2(lumi)fb for a Higgs boson of mass 125.4GeV decaying to two isolated photons that have transverse momentum greater than 35% and 25% of the diphoton invariant mass and each with absolute pseudorapidity less than 2.37. Four additional fiducial cross sections and two cross-section limits are presented in phase space regions that test the theoretical modelling of different Higgs boson production mechanisms, or are sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model. Differential cross sections are also presented, as a function of variables related to the diphoton kinematics and the jet activity produced in the Higgs boson events. The observed spectra are statistically limited but broadly in line with the theoretical expectations
