    An ALMA Survey of Submillimeter Galaxies in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South : The Redshift Distribution and Evolution of Submillimeter Galaxies

    Accepted by ApJ. 45 pages, 16 figuresWe present the first photometric redshift distribution for a large unbiased sample of 870um selected submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) with robust identifications based on observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). In our analysis we consider 96 SMGs in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South, 77 of which have 4-19 band, optical-near-infrared, photometry. We model the Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) for these 77 SMGs, deriving a median photometric redshift of z=2.3+/-0.1. The remaining 19 SMGs have insufficient optical or near-infrared photometry to derive photometric redshifts, but a stacking analysis of IRAC and Herschel observations confirms they are not spurious. Assuming these sources have an absolute H-band magnitude distribution comparable to that of a complete sample of z~1-2 SMGs, we demonstrate that the undetected SMGs lie at higher redshifts, raising the median redshift for SMGs to z=2.5+/-0.2. More critically we show that the proportion of galaxies undergoing an SMG phase at z>3 is 35+/-5% of the total population. We derive a median stellar mass for SMGs of Mstar=(8+/-1)x10^10Mo, but caution that there are significant systematic uncertainties in our stellar mass estimate, up to x5 for individual sources. We compare our sample of SMGs to a volume-limited, morphologically classified sample of ellipticals in the local Universe. Assuming the star formation activity in SMGs has a timescale of ~100Myr we show that their descendants at z~0 would have a space density and M_H distribution which are in good agreement with those of local ellipticals. In addition the inferred mass-weighted ages of the local ellipticals broadly agree with the look-back times of the SMG events. Taken together, these results are consistent with a simple model that identifies SMGs as events that form most of the stars seen in the majority of luminous elliptical galaxies at the present day.Peer reviewe

    CO excitation of normal star forming galaxies out to z=1.5 as regulated by the properties of their interstellar medium

    We investigate the CO excitation of normal star forming galaxies at z=1.5 using IRAM PdBI observations of the CO[2-1], CO[3-2] and CO[5-4] transitions for 4 galaxies, and VLA observations of CO[1-0] for 3 of them, measuring reliable line fluxes with S/N>4-7 for individual transitions. While the average CO Spectral Line Energy Distribution (SLED) has a sub-thermal excitation similar to the Milky Way (MW) up to CO[3-2], we show that the average CO[5-4] emission is 4 times stronger than assuming MW excitation. This demonstrates the presence of an additional component of more excited, denser and possibly warmer molecular gas. The ratio of CO[5-4] to lower-J CO emission is however lower than in local (U)LIRGs and high-redshift starbursting SMGs, and appears to correlate closely with the average intensity of the radiation field and with the star formation surface density, but not with SF efficiency (SFE). This suggests that the overall CO excitation is at least indirectly affected by the metallicity of the ISM. The luminosity of the CO[5-4] transition is found to correlate linearly with the bolometric infrared luminosity over 4 orders of magnitudes, with BzK galaxies following the same linear trend as local spirals and (U)LIRGs and high redshift star bursting sub-millimeter galaxies. The CO[5-4] luminosity is thus related to the dense gas, and might be a more convenient way to probe it than standard high--density tracers. We see excitation variations among our sample galaxies, linked to their evolutionary state and clumpiness in optical rest frame images. In one galaxy we see spatially resolved excitation variations, the more highly excited part corresponds to the location of massive SF clumps. This provides support to models that suggest that giant clumps are the main source of the high excitation CO emission in high redshift disk-like galaxies

    O clima das ilhas do arquipÊlago de Cabo Verde sempre impôs muitas restriçþes ao desenvolvimento da atividade agrícola, devido a um regime pluviomÊtrico com baixos volumes e concentrado numa única estação, chamada estação das åguas (agosto - outubro). O presente estudo utiliza as metodologias apresentadas por Thornthwaite e o sistema de classificação de KÜppen para avaliar e caracterizar o clima no arquipÊlago de Cabo Verde. Foram utilizadas sÊries temporais mensais de precipitação e de temperatura do ar mais longa possível e disponível para as diversas ilhas, que variaram entre 20 e 30 anos de dados. Para as localidades que existem dados de precipitação e não dispunham de dados de temperatura, elas foram estimadas com base no modelo em função das coordenadas geogråficas. Os resultados do trabalho permitiram concluir que o período chuvoso de Cabo Verde coincide com o período mais quente do arquipÊlago. AlÊm disso, o clima do arquipÊlago varia de semiårido a årido, exceto a ilha do Fogo que apresenta algumas åreas com clima sub úmido. O clima desse arquipÊlago tambÊm pode ser classificado, de forma geral, como seco desÊrtico muito quente com chuva de inverno e irregulares pela classificação de KÜppen.Abstract The climate on islands of Cape Verde has always imposed many restrictions on agricultural development due to low rainfall regime mainly concentrated in a single season, called of rainy season (August-October). This study used the methodologies presented by Thornthwaite and the KÜppen classification for evaluating and to characterize the climate in the Cape Verde archipelago. It was used time series of both monthly rainfall and air temperature as long as possible as well as available to the various islands on the archipelago, ranging between 20 and 30 years. For locations with rainfall data but no air temperature data, air temperature were estimated based on the model as a function of geographic coordinates. The results indicate that the rainy season in Cape Verde coincides with the hottest period on the archipelago, due to convective effects. Moreover, the climate on the archipelago ranges from arid to semiarid, except in the island of Fogo, which presents some areas with sub humid climate according to the Thornthwaite classification. In general form, the climate on the archipelago can also be classified as hot and dry deserts with irregular winter rainfall according to climate classification of KÜppen

    Search for rare quark-annihilation decays, B --> Ds(*) Phi

    We report on searches for B- --> Ds- Phi and B- --> Ds*- Phi. In the context of the Standard Model, these decays are expected to be highly suppressed since they proceed through annihilation of the b and u-bar quarks in the B- meson. Our results are based on 234 million Upsilon(4S) --> B Bbar decays collected with the BABAR detector at SLAC. We find no evidence for these decays, and we set Bayesian 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions BF(B- --> Ds- Phi) Ds*- Phi)<1.2x10^(-5).     Performance of CMS muon reconstruction in pp collision events at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    The performance of muon reconstruction, identification, and triggering in CMS has been studied using 40 inverse picobarns of data collected in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV at the LHC in 2010. A few benchmark sets of selection criteria covering a wide range of physics analysis needs have been examined. For all considered selections, the efficiency to reconstruct and identify a muon with a transverse momentum pT larger than a few GeV is above 95% over the whole region of pseudorapidity covered by the CMS muon system, abs(eta) < 2.4, while the probability to misidentify a hadron as a muon is well below 1%. The efficiency to trigger on single muons with pT above a few GeV is higher than 90% over the full eta range, and typically substantially better. The overall momentum scale is measured to a precision of 0.2% with muons from Z decays. The transverse momentum resolution varies from 1% to 6% depending on pseudorapidity for muons with pT below 100 GeV and, using cosmic rays, it is shown to be better than 10% in the central region up to pT = 1 TeV.     X-ray emission from the Sombrero galaxy: discrete sources

    We present a study of discrete X-ray sources in and around the bulge-dominated, massive Sa galaxy, Sombrero (M104), based on new and archival Chandra observations with a total exposure of ~200 ks. With a detection limit of L_X = 1E37 erg/s and a field of view covering a galactocentric radius of ~30 kpc (11.5 arcminute), 383 sources are detected. Cross-correlation with Spitler et al.'s catalogue of Sombrero globular clusters (GCs) identified from HST/ACS observations reveals 41 X-rays sources in GCs, presumably low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). We quantify the differential luminosity functions (LFs) for both the detected GC and field LMXBs, whose power-low indices (~1.1 for the GC-LF and ~1.6 for field-LF) are consistent with previous studies for elliptical galaxies. With precise sky positions of the GCs without a detected X-ray source, we further quantify, through a fluctuation analysis, the GC LF at fainter luminosities down to 1E35 erg/s. The derived index rules out a faint-end slope flatter than 1.1 at a 2 sigma significance, contrary to recent findings in several elliptical galaxies and the bulge of M31. On the other hand, the 2-6 keV unresolved emission places a tight constraint on the field LF, implying a flattened index of ~1.0 below 1E37 erg/s. We also detect 101 sources in the halo of Sombrero. The presence of these sources cannot be interpreted as galactic LMXBs whose spatial distribution empirically follows the starlight. Their number is also higher than the expected number of cosmic AGNs (52+/-11 [1 sigma]) whose surface density is constrained by deep X-ray surveys. We suggest that either the cosmic X-ray background is unusually high in the direction of Sombrero, or a distinct population of X-ray sources is present in the halo of Sombrero.Comment: 11 figures, 5 tables, ApJ in pres
