Alignment of the CMS silicon tracker during commissioning with cosmic rays

    Get PDF
The CMS silicon tracker, consisting of 1440 silicon pixel and 15 148 silicon strip detector modules, has been aligned using more than three million cosmic ray charged particles, with additional information from optical surveys. The positions of the modules were determined with respect to cosmic ray trajectories to an average precision of 3-4 microns RMS in the barrel and 3-14 microns RMS in the endcap in the most sensitive coordinate. The results have been validated by several studies, including laser beam cross-checks, track fit self-consistency, track residuals in overlapping module regions, and track parameter resolution, and are compared with predictions obtained from simulation. Correlated systematic effects have been investigated. The track parameter resolutions obtained with this alignment are close to the design performance

Charged-particle angular correlations in XeXe collisions at root s(NN)=5.44 TeV

    Get PDF
Azimuthal correlations of charged particles in xenon-xenon collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of root s(NN) = 5.44 TeV are studied. The data were collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC with a total integrated luminosity of 3.42 mu b(-1). The collective motion of the system formed in the collision is parametrized by a Fourier expansion of the azimuthal particle density distribution. The azimuthal anisotropy coefficients v(2), v(3), and v(4) are obtained by the scalar-product, two-particle correlation, and multiparticle correlation methods. Within a hydrodynamic picture, these methods have different sensitivities to noncollective and fluctuation effects. The dependence of the Fourier coefficients on the size of the colliding system is explored by comparing the xenon-xenon results with equivalent lead-lead data. Model calculations that include initial-state fluctuation effects are also compared to the experimental results. The observed angular correlations provide new constraints on the hydrodynamic description of heavy ion collisions.Peer reviewe

Measurement of B-s(0) meson production in pp and PbPb collisions at root S-NN=5.02 TeV

    Get PDF
The production cross sections of B-s(0) mesons and charge conjugates are measured in proton-proton (pp) and PbPb collisions via the exclusive decay channel B-s(0)-> J/ psi phi ->mu(+) mu(-) K+K- at a center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV per nucleon pair and within the rapidity range vertical bar y vertical bar <2.4 using the CMS detector at the LHC. The pp measurement is performed as a function of transverse momentum (P-T) of the B-s(0), mesons in the range of 7 to 50 GeV/c and is compared to the predictions of perturbative QCD calculations. The B s production yield in PbPb collisions is measured in two F t intervals, 7 to 15 and 15 to 50 GeV/c, and compared to the yield in pp collisions in the same kinematic region. The nuclear modification factor (R-AA) is found to be 1.5 +/- 0.6(stat) +/- 0.5(syst) for 7-15 GeV/c, and 0.87 +/- 0.30(stat) +/- 0.1 7(syst) for 15-50 GeV/c, respectively. Within current uncertainties, the B-s(0) results are consistent with models of strangeness enhancement, and suppression by parton energy loss, as observed for the B+ mesons. Search for dijet resonances using events with three jets in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

    Get PDF
A search for a narrow resonance with a mass between 350 and 700 GeV, and decaying into a pair of jets, is performed using proton-proton collision events containing at least three jets. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 18.3 fb(-1) recorded at root s = 13 TeV with the CMS detector. Data are collected with a technique known as "data scouting", in which the events are reconstructed, selected, and recorded at a high rate in a compact form by the high-level trigger. The three-jet final state provides sensitivity to lower resonance masses than in previous searches using the data scouting technique. The spectrum of the dijet invariant mass, calculated from the two jets with the largest transverse momenta in the event, is used to search for a resonance. No significant excess over a smoothly falling background is found. Limits at 95% confidence level are set on the production cross section of a narrow dijet resonance and compared with the cross section of a vector dark matter mediator coupling to dark matter particles and quarks. Translating to a model where the narrow resonance interacts only with quarks, upper limits on this coupling range between 0.10 and 0.15, depending on the resonance mass. These results represent the most stringent upper limits in the mass range between 350 and 450 GeV obtained with a flavor-inclusive dijet resonance search. (C) 2020 The Author(s). Observation of nuclear modifications in W-+/- boson production in pPb collisions at root s(NN)=8.16 TeV

    Get PDF
The production of W-+/- bosons is studied in proton-lead (pPb) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of root s(NN) = 8.16 TeV. Measurements are performed in the W-+/- -> mu(+/-)nu(mu) channel using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 173.4 +/- 6.1 nb(-1), collected by the CMS Collaboration at the LHC. The number of positively and negatively charged W bosons is determined separately in the muon pseudorapidity region in the laboratory frame vertical bar eta(mu)(lab)vertical bar 25 GeV/c. The W-+/- boson differential cross sections, muon charge asymmetry, and the ratios of W-+/- boson yields for the proton-going over the Pb-going beam directions are reported as a function of the muon pseudorapidity in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass frame. The measurements are compared to the predictions from theoretical calculations based on parton distribution functions (PDFs) at next-to-leading-order. The results favour PDF calculations that include nuclear modifications and provide constraints on the nuclear PDF global fits. (C) 2019 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V

Measurement of the Y(1S) pair production cross section and search for resonances decaying to Y(1S)ÎŒâșΌ⁻ in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV

    Get PDF
The fiducial cross section for Y(1S) pair production in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in the region where both Y(1S) mesons have an absolute rapidity below 2.0 is measured to be 79±11(stat)±6(syst)±3(B) pb assuming the mesons are produced unpolarized. The last uncertainty corresponds to the uncertainty in the Y(1S) meson dimuon branching fraction. The measurement is performed in the final state with four muons using proton-proton collision data collected in 2016 by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb⁻Âč. This process serves as a standard model reference in a search for narrow resonances decaying to Y(1S)ÎŒâșΌ⁻ in the same final state. Such a resonance could indicate the existence of a tetraquark that is a bound state of two b quarks and two b antiquarks. The tetraquark search is performed for masses in the vicinity of four times the bottom quark mass, between 17.5 and 19.5 GeV, while a generic search for other resonances is performed for masses between 16.5 and 27 GeV. No significant excess of events compatible with a narrow resonance is observed in the data. Limits on the production cross section times branching fraction to four muons via an intermediate Y(1S) resonance are set as a function of the resonance mass
