Emotional health in adolescents with and without a history of specific language impairment (SLI)
Objective:â This study examined the emotional health of adolescents with and without specific language impairment (SLI).
Method:â One hundred and thirty-nine adolescents with a history of SLI (15;10 years) and a peer group of 124 adolescents with normal language development (NLD) (15;11 years) participated, who were in their final year of compulsory schooling. The risk of emotional difficulties was assessed using the Moods and Feelings Questionnaire (MFQ) and the Child Manifest Anxiety Scale-R (CMAS-R). Comprehensive language and cognition data were available for all participants (NLD and SLI) concurrently and also longitudinally for those with SLI.
Results:â A clear increased risk of emotional health symptoms was found for the SLI group on both self- and parental-report. Girls scored less favourably than boys when groups were combined, but these were due to the effect of the NLD group, with no gender differences found in the SLI group. Direct links with language and cognition were not obvious. Instead, more diffuse factors such as family history of emotional health difficulties may warrant further investigation.
Conclusion:â There is a marked higher rate of anxiety and depression symptoms in adolescents with SLI. However, these do not appear to be a direct result of impoverished communicative experiences
Heritability of specific language impairment depends on diagnostic criteria
Heritability estimates for specific language impairment (SLI) have been inconsistent. Four twin studies reported heritability of 0.5 or more, but a recent report from the Twins Early Development Study found negligible genetic influence in 4-year-olds. We considered whether the method of ascertainment influenced results and found substantially higher heritability if SLI was defined in terms of referral to speech and language pathology services than if defined by language test scores. Further analysis showed that presence of speech difficulties played a major role in determining whether a child had contact with services. Childhood language disorders that are identified by population screening are likely to have a different phenotype and different etiology from clinically referred cases. Genetic studies are more likely to find high heritability if they focus on cases who have speech difficulties and who have been referred for intervention
A Soluble Phase Field Model
The kinetics of an initially undercooled solid-liquid melt is studied by
means of a generalized Phase Field model, which describes the dynamics of an
ordering non-conserved field phi (e.g. solid-liquid order parameter) coupled to
a conserved field (e.g. thermal field). After obtaining the rules governing the
evolution process, by means of analytical arguments, we present a discussion of
the asymptotic time-dependent solutions. The full solutions of the exact
self-consistent equations for the model are also obtained and compared with
computer simulation results. In addition, in order to check the validity of the
present model we confronted its predictions against those of the standard Phase
field model and found reasonable agreement. Interestingly, we find that the
system relaxes towards a mixed phase, depending on the average value of the
conserved field, i.e. on the initial condition. Such a phase is characterized

The Atomic Physics Underlying the Spectroscopic Analysis of Massive Stars and Supernovae
We have developed a radiative transfer code, CMFGEN, which allows us to model
the spectra of massive stars and supernovae. Using CMFGEN we can derive
fundamental parameters such as effective temperatures and surface gravities,
derive abundances, and place constraints on stellar wind properties. The last
of these is important since all massive stars are losing mass via a stellar
wind that is driven from the star by radiation pressure, and this mass loss can
substantially influence the spectral appearance and evolution of the star.
Recently we have extended CMFGEN to allow us to undertake time-dependent
radiative transfer calculations of supernovae. Such calculations will be used
to place constraints on the supernova progenitor, to place constraints on the
supernova explosion and nucleosynthesis, and to derive distances using a
physical approach called the "Expanding Photosphere Method". We describe the
assumptions underlying the code and the atomic processes involved. A crucial
ingredient in the code is the atomic data. For the modeling we require accurate
transition wavelengths, oscillator strengths, photoionization cross-sections,
collision strengths, autoionization rates, and charge exchange rates for
virtually all species up to, and including, cobalt. Presently, the available

Heritable risk factors associated with language impairments
There is a strong genetic contribution to childrenâs language and literacy impairments. The aim of this study was to determine which aspects of the phenotype are familial by comparing 34 parents of probands with language/literacy impairments and 33 parents of typically developing probands. The parents responded to questionnaires regarding previous history for language/reading impairment and participated in psychometric testing. The psychometric test battery consisted of tests assessing non-verbal IQ, short-term memory, articulation, receptive grammar, reading abilities and spelling. Self-report measures demonstrated a higher prevalence of language and literacy impairments in parents of affected probands (32%) compared with parents of unaffected probands (6%). The two groups of parents differed significantly in their performance on the non-word repetition, oromotor and digit span tasks. Non-word repetition gave the best discrimination between the parent groups even when the data from the parents who actually were impaired as ascertained by direct testing or self-report were removed from the analyses. This suggests that non-word repetition serves as a marker of a family risk for language impairment. Momentum-resolved electronic structure at a buried interface from soft x-ray standing-wave angle-resolved photoemission
Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is a powerful technique for
the study of electronic structure, but it lacks a direct ability to study
buried interfaces between two materials. We address this limitation by
combining ARPES with soft x-ray standing-wave (SW) excitation (SWARPES), in
which the SW profile is scanned through the depth of the sample. We have
studied the buried interface in a prototypical magnetic tunnel junction
La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrTiO3. Depth- and momentum-resolved maps of Mn 3d eg and t2g
states from the central, bulk-like and interface-like regions of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3
exhibit distinctly different behavior consistent with a change in the Mn
bonding at the interface. We compare the experimental results to
state-of-the-art density-functional and one-step photoemission theory, with
encouraging agreement that suggests wide future applications of this technique.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures and Supplementary Informatio
NEST: A Comprehensive Model for Scintillation Yield in Liquid Xenon
A comprehensive model for explaining scintillation yield in liquid xenon is
introduced. We unify various definitions of work function which abound in the
literature and incorporate all available data on electron recoil scintillation
yield. This results in a better understanding of electron recoil, and
facilitates an improved description of nuclear recoil. An incident gamma energy
range of O(1 keV) to O(1 MeV) and electric fields between 0 and O(10 kV/cm) are
incorporated into this heuristic model. We show results from a Geant4
implementation, but because the model has a few free parameters, implementation
in any simulation package should be simple. We use a quasi-empirical approach,
with an objective of improving detector calibrations and performance
verification. The model will aid in the design and optimization of future
detectors. This model is also easy to extend to other noble elements. In this
paper we lay the foundation for an exhaustive simulation code which we call
NEST (Noble Element Simulation Technique).Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures, 3 table
Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in âs = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fbâ1 of protonâproton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC
Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC
provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of
lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with
a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the
transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the
anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the
nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of
the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp.
Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in
the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies
smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating
nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and
transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of
inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous
measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables,
