    Positioning of young women in their future career: investigation of the influence of a video on personal perception

    Women are globally underrepresented in the higher levels of hierarchy of the firms. This is not necessarily due to a lack of ambition, but mainly to barriers that impede women from reaching the top or slow down their ascent. This phenomenon is recognized worldwide and called the “glass ceiling” effect. It is the presence of transparent obstacles that appear in women’s career and makes it difficult, or impossible, to rise to a higher position. On one hand the present report analyses the situation of women in top-level positions and explains what are the challenges, and on the other hand, the “raison d’ĂȘtre” of this report, is to conduct a psychosocial experiment on young women in Switzerland and Peru using an online survey (with and without video). Young women are the employees of tomorrow, thus it can be interesting to have their opinion. This experiment allowed gathering data on young women’s views and expectations on this theme and to determine their perception of their future careers. In total 547 answers were collected, most of them from the French part of Switzerland. This experiment had three objectives; the first was to understand young women’s selfperceptions of a role in a future leading position, the second was to investigate the influence of culture on young women’s positioning and the final was to determine the possible impact of a video on the positioning of young women. Results from the analysis of the data showed that the majority of the respondents had no knowledge of the glass ceiling effect. Moreover, in general young women in Switzerland and Peru had ambition to reach a top-level position and believed that they would be able to reach a work-life balance, which is one of the greatest challenges, that women face today. Young women appeared to have self-limiting behaviors, a principal barrier to women’s advancement. However, a cultural difference was noticed as Peruvian young women showed more self-confidence on their positioning than Swiss young women. A principal finding on ambition was that young women with ambition recognize less the importance and possible impact of the barriers they might encounter in their career than young women without ambition. Finally, the impact of the video was not conclusive as no significant differences in the answers were reported between the individuals who watched the video and those who did not

    ience, this issue p. eaap8757 Structured Abstract INTRODUCTION Brain disorders may exhibit shared symptoms and substantial epidemiological comorbidity, inciting debate about their etiologic overlap. However, detailed study of phenotypes with different ages of onset, severity, and presentation poses a considerable challenge. Recently developed heritability methods allow us to accurately measure correlation of genome-wide common variant risk between two phenotypes from pools of different individuals and assess how connected they, or at least their genetic risks, are on the genomic level. We used genome-wide association data for 265,218 patients and 784,643 control participants, as well as 17 phenotypes from a total of 1,191,588 individuals, to quantify the degree of overlap for genetic risk factors of 25 common brain disorders. RATIONALE Over the past century, the classification of brain disorders has evolved to reflect the medical and scientific communities' assessments of the presumed root causes of clinical phenomena such as behavioral change, loss of motor function, or alterations of consciousness. Directly observable phenomena (such as the presence of emboli, protein tangles, or unusual electrical activity patterns) generally define and separate neurological disorders from psychiatric disorders. Understanding the genetic underpinnings and categorical distinctions for brain disorders and related phenotypes may inform the search for their biological mechanisms. RESULTS Common variant risk for psychiatric disorders was shown to correlate significantly, especially among attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder (MDD), and schizophrenia. By contrast, neurological disorders appear more distinct from one another and from the psychiatric disorders, except for migraine, which was significantly correlated to ADHD, MDD, and Tourette syndrome. We demonstrate that, in the general population, the personality trait neuroticism is significantly correlated with almost every psychiatric disorder and migraine. We also identify significant genetic sharing between disorders and early life cognitive measures (e.g., years of education and college attainment) in the general population, demonstrating positive correlation with several psychiatric disorders (e.g., anorexia nervosa and bipolar disorder) and negative correlation with several neurological phenotypes (e.g., Alzheimer's disease and ischemic stroke), even though the latter are considered to result from specific processes that occur later in life. Extensive simulations were also performed to inform how statistical power, diagnostic misclassification, and phenotypic heterogeneity influence genetic correlations. CONCLUSION The high degree of genetic correlation among many of the psychiatric disorders adds further evidence that their current clinical boundaries do not reflect distinct underlying pathogenic processes, at least on the genetic level. This suggests a deeply interconnected nature for psychiatric disorders, in contrast to neurological disorders, and underscores the need to refine psychiatric diagnostics. Genetically informed analyses may provide important "scaffolding" to support such restructuring of psychiatric nosology, which likely requires incorporating many levels of information. By contrast, we find limited evidence for widespread common genetic risk sharing among neurological disorders or across neurological and psychiatric disorders. We show that both psychiatric and neurological disorders have robust correlations with cognitive and personality measures. Further study is needed to evaluate whether overlapping genetic contributions to psychiatric pathology may influence treatment choices. Ultimately, such developments may pave the way toward reduced heterogeneity and improved diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders

    As the knowledge base and importance of mitochondrial physiology to evolution, health and disease expands, the necessity for harmonizing the terminology concerning mitochondrial respiratory states and rates has become increasingly apparent. The chemiosmotic theory establishes the mechanism of energy transformation and coupling in oxidative phosphorylation. The unifying concept of the protonmotive force provides the framework for developing a consistent theoretical foundation of mitochondrial physiology and bioenergetics. We follow the latest SI guidelines and those of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) on terminology in physical chemistry, extended by considerations of open systems and thermodynamics of irreversible processes. The concept-driven constructive terminology incorporates the meaning of each quantity and aligns concepts and symbols with the nomenclature of classical bioenergetics. We endeavour to provide a balanced view of mitochondrial respiratory control and a critical discussion on reporting data of mitochondrial respiration in terms of metabolic flows and fluxes. Uniform standards for evaluation of respiratory states and rates will ultimately contribute to reproducibility between laboratories and thus support the development of data repositories of mitochondrial respiratory function in species, tissues, and cells.     Combination of neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgical resection as a new strategy for WHO grade II gliomas: a study of cognitive status and quality of life

    International audienceDiffuse WHO grade II (GIIG) may be unresectable when involving critical structures. To assess the feasibility and functional tolerance (cognition and quality of life) of an original therapeutic strategy combining neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgical resection for initially inoperable GIIG. Ten patients underwent Temozolomide for unresectable GIIG, as initial treatment or at recurrence after previous partial resection, due to invasion of eloquent areas or bi-hemispheric diffusion preventing a total/subtotal removal. Functional outcome after both treatments was assessed, with evaluation of seven cognitive domains. Chemotherapy induced tumor shrinkage (median volume decrease 38.9%) in ipsilateral functional areas in six patients and in the contralateral hemisphere in four. Only four patients had a 1p19q codeletion. The tumor shrinkage made possible the resection (mean extent of resection 93.3%, 9 total or subtotal removals) of initially inoperable tumors. Postoperatively, three patients had no deficits, while verbal episodic memory and executive functions were slightly impaired in seven patients. However, global quality of life was roughly preserved on the EORTC QLQ C30 + BN 20 (median score: 66.7%). Role functioning score was relatively reduced (median score: 66.7%) whereas KPS was preserved (median score: 90, range 80–100). Seven patients became seizure-free while three improved. This combined treatment is feasible, efficient (surgery made possible by neoadjuvant chemotherapy) and well-tolerated (preservation of quality of life, no serious cognitive disturbances). Cognitive deficits seem mostly related to tumor location. Because KPS is not reliable enough, a detailed neuropsychological assessment should be systematically performed in GIIG

    High expression of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase gene in prostate cancer

    Arginase 2, inducible- and endothelial-nitric-oxide synthase (iNOS and eNOS), indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) and TGF-beta, might impair immune functions in prostate cancer (PCA) patients. However, their expression was not comparatively analysed in PCA and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). We evaluated the expression of these genes in PCA and BPH tissues. Seventy-six patients (42 BPH, 34 PCA) were enrolled. Arginase 2, eNOS and iNOS gene expression was similar in BPH and PCA tissues. TGF-beta1 gene expression was higher in BPH than in PCA tissues (p=0.035). IDO gene expression was more frequently detectable (p=0.00007) and quantitatively higher (p=0.00001) in PCA tissues than in BPH. IDO protein, expressed in endothelial cells from both BPH and PCA, was detectable in tumour cells in PCA showing evidence of high specific gene expression. In these patients, IDO gene expression correlated with kynurenine/tryptophan ratio in sera. Thus high expression of IDO gene is specifically detectable in PCA
