    Summability of the perturbative expansion for a zero-dimensional disordered spin model

    We show analytically that the perturbative expansion for the free energy of the zero dimensional (quenched) disordered Ising model is Borel-summable in a certain range of parameters, provided that the summation is carried out in two steps: first, in the strength of the original coupling of the Ising model and subsequently in the variance of the quenched disorder. This result is illustrated by some high-precision calculations of the free energy obtained by a straightforward numerical implementation of our sequential summation method.Comment: LaTeX, 12 pages and 4 figure

    Multiple late-Pleistocene colonisation events of the Antarctic pearlwort Colobanthus quitensis (Caryophyllaceae) reveal the recent arrival of native Antarctic vascular flora

    Aim: Antarctica's remote and extreme terrestrial environments are inhabited by only two species of native vascular plants. We assessed genetic connectivity amongst Antarctic and South American populations of one of these species, Colobanthus quitensis, to determine its origin and age in Antarctica. Location: Maritime Antarctic, sub‐Antarctic islands, South America. Taxon: Antarctic pearlwort Colobanthus quitensis (Caryophyllaceae). Methods: Four chloroplast markers and one nuclear marker were sequenced from 270 samples from a latitudinal transect spanning 21–68° S. Phylogeographic, population genetic and molecular dating analyses were used to assess the demographic history of C. quitensis and the age of the species in Antarctica. Results: Maritime Antarctic populations consisted of two different haplotype clusters, occupying the northern and southern Maritime Antarctic. Molecular dating analyses suggested C. quitensis to be a young (<1 Ma) species, with contemporary population structure derived since the late‐Pleistocene. Main conclusions: The Maritime Antarctic populations likely derived from two independent, late‐Pleistocene dispersal events. Both clusters shared haplotypes with sub‐Antarctic South Georgia, suggesting higher connectivity across the Southern Ocean than previously thought. The overall findings of multiple colonization events by a vascular plant species to Antarctica, and the recent timing of these events, are of significance with respect to future colonizations of the Antarctic Peninsula by vascular plants, particularly with predicted increases in ice‐free land in this area. This study fills a significant gap in our knowledge of the age of the contemporary Antarctic terrestrial biota. Adding to previous inferences on the other Antarctic vascular plant species (the grass Deschampsia antarctica), we suggest that both angiosperm species are likely to have arrived on a recent (late‐Pleistocene) time‐scale. While most major groups of Antarctic terrestrial biota include examples of much longer‐term Antarctic persistence, the vascular flora stands out as the first identified terrestrial group that appears to be of recent origin

    New prioritized value iteration for Markov decision processes

    The problem of solving large Markov decision processes accurately and quickly is challenging. Since the computational effort incurred is considerable, current research focuses on finding superior acceleration techniques. For instance, the convergence properties of current solution methods depend, to a great extent, on the order of backup operations. On one hand, algorithms such as topological sorting are able to find good orderings but their overhead is usually high. On the other hand, shortest path methods, such as Dijkstra's algorithm which is based on priority queues, have been applied successfully to the solution of deterministic shortest-path Markov decision processes. Here, we propose an improved value iteration algorithm based on Dijkstra's algorithm for solving shortest path Markov decision processes.     Plasticity in dendroclimatic response across the distribution range of Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis)

    We investigated the variability of the climate-growth relationship of Aleppo pine across its distribution range in the Mediterranean Basin. We constructed a network of tree-ring index chronologies from 63 sites across the region. Correlation function analysis identified the relationships of tree-ring index to climate factors for each site. We also estimated the dominant climatic gradients of the region using principal component analysis of monthly, seasonal, and annual mean temperature and total precipitation from 1,068 climatic gridpoints. Variation in ring width index was primarily related to precipitation and secondarily to temperature. However, we found that the dendroclimatic relationship depended on the position of the site along the climatic gradient. In the southern part of the distribution range, where temperature was generally higher and precipitation lower than the regional average, reduced growth was also associated with warm and dry conditions. In the northern part, where the average temperature was lower and the precipitation more abundant than the regional average, reduced growth was associated with cool conditions. Thus, our study highlights the substantial plasticity of Aleppo pine in response to different climatic conditions. These results do not resolve the source of response variability as being due to either genetic variation in provenance, to phenotypic plasticity, or a combination of factors. However, as current growth responses to inter-annual climate variability vary spatially across existing climate gradients, future climate-growth relationships will also likely be determined by differential adaptation and/or acclimation responses to spatial climatic variation. The contribution of local adaptation and/or phenotypic plasticity across populations to the persistence of species under global warming could be decisive for prediction of climate change impacts across populations.     The clinical relevance of oliguria in the critically ill patient : Analysis of a large observational database

Copyright: Copyright 2020 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Background: Urine output is widely used as one of the criteria for the diagnosis and staging of acute renal failure, but few studies have specifically assessed the role of oliguria as a marker of acute renal failure or outcomes in general intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Using a large multinational database, we therefore evaluated the occurrence of oliguria (defined as a urine output 16 years) patients in the ICON audit who had a urine output measurement on the day of admission were included. To investigate the association between oliguria and mortality, we used a multilevel analysis. Results: Of the 8292 patients included, 2050 (24.7%) were oliguric during the first 24 h of admission. Patients with oliguria on admission who had at least one additional 24-h urine output recorded during their ICU stay (n = 1349) were divided into three groups: transient - oliguria resolved within 48 h after the admission day (n = 390 [28.9%]), prolonged - oliguria resolved > 48 h after the admission day (n = 141 [10.5%]), and permanent - oliguria persisting for the whole ICU stay or again present at the end of the ICU stay (n = 818 [60.6%]). ICU and hospital mortality rates were higher in patients with oliguria than in those without, except for patients with transient oliguria who had significantly lower mortality rates than non-oliguric patients. In multilevel analysis, the need for RRT was associated with a significantly higher risk of death (OR = 1.51 [95% CI 1.19-1.91], p = 0.001), but the presence of oliguria on admission was not (OR = 1.14 [95% CI 0.97-1.34], p = 0.103). Conclusions: Oliguria is common in ICU patients and may have a relatively benign nature if only transient.     Hyperoxemia and excess oxygen use in early acute respiratory distress syndrome : Insights from the LUNG SAFE study

We examined this issue in patients with ARDS enrolled in the Large observational study to UNderstand the Global impact of Severe Acute respiratory FailurE (LUNG SAFE) study. Methods: In this secondary analysis of the LUNG SAFE study, we wished to determine the prevalence and the outcomes associated with hyperoxemia on day 1, sustained hyperoxemia, and excessive oxygen use in patients with early ARDS. Patients who fulfilled criteria of ARDS on day 1 and day 2 of acute hypoxemic respiratory failure were categorized based on the presence of hyperoxemia (PaO2 > 100 mmHg) on day 1, sustained (i.e., present on day 1 and day 2) hyperoxemia, or excessive oxygen use (FIO2 ≥ 0.60 during hyperoxemia). Results: Of 2005 patients that met the inclusion criteria, 131 (6.5%) were hypoxemic (PaO2 < 55 mmHg), 607 (30%) had hyperoxemia on day 1, and 250 (12%) had sustained hyperoxemia. Excess FIO2 use occurred in 400 (66%) out of 607 patients with hyperoxemia. Excess FIO2 use decreased from day 1 to day 2 of ARDS, with most hyperoxemic patients on day 2 receiving relatively low FIO2. Multivariate analyses found no independent relationship between day 1 hyperoxemia, sustained hyperoxemia, or excess FIO2 use and adverse clinical outcomes. Mortality was 42% in patients with excess FIO2 use, compared to 39% in a propensity-matched sample of normoxemic (PaO2 55-100 mmHg) patients (P = 0.47). Conclusions: Hyperoxemia and excess oxygen use are both prevalent in early ARDS but are most often non-sustained. No relationship was found between hyperoxemia or excessive oxygen use and patient outcome in this cohort.     Global, regional, and national age-sex-specific mortality for 282 causes of death in 195 countries and territories, 1980-2017: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017.

    BACKGROUND: Global development goals increasingly rely on country-specific estimates for benchmarking a nation's progress. To meet this need, the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2016 estimated global, regional, national, and, for selected locations, subnational cause-specific mortality beginning in the year 1980. Here we report an update to that study, making use of newly available data and improved methods. GBD 2017 provides a comprehensive assessment of cause-specific mortality for 282 causes in 195 countries and territories from 1980 to 2017. METHODS: The causes of death database is composed of vital registration (VR), verbal autopsy (VA), registry, survey, police, and surveillance data. GBD 2017 added ten VA studies, 127 country-years of VR data, 502 cancer-registry country-years, and an additional surveillance country-year. Expansions of the GBD cause of death hierarchy resulted in 18 additional causes estimated for GBD 2017. Newly available data led to subnational estimates for five additional countries-Ethiopia, Iran, New Zealand, Norway, and Russia. Deaths assigned International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes for non-specific, implausible, or intermediate causes of death were reassigned to underlying causes by redistribution algorithms that were incorporated into uncertainty estimation. We used statistical modelling tools developed for GBD, including the Cause of Death Ensemble model (CODEm), to generate cause fractions and cause-specific death rates for each location, year, age, and sex. Instead of using UN estimates as in previous versions, GBD 2017 independently estimated population size and fertility rate for all locations. Years of life lost (YLLs) were then calculated as the sum of each death multiplied by the standard life expectancy at each age. All rates reported here are age-standardised

    Integration of Physiological and Molecular Traits Would Help to Improve the Insights of Drought Resistance in Highbush Blueberry Cultivars

    Water deficit or drought is one of the most severe factors limiting plant yield or fruit quality. Thus, water availability for irrigation is decisive for crop success, such as the case of highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.). Therefore, drought stress may compromise blueberry production due to lower fruit weight or fruit yield. Despite this, it is unclear if there is any difference in the response of blueberry cultivars to water deficit, either in terms of physiological and molecular parameters, or in terms of their sensitivity or resistance to drought. In this study, we determined the effect of drought on different physiological parameters in blueberry plants (relative water content (RWC), photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm), Carbon Isotopic Discrimination, and proline content) in six V. corymbosum cultivars. We also explored molecular responses in terms of gene expression coding for late embryogenesis abundant proteins. Finally, we estimated cultivar water deficit resistance using an integrative model based on physiological results. Upon water deficit conditions, we found reductions in Fv/Fm, RWC, and isotopic discrimination of 13C (&Delta;13C), while proline content increased significantly for all cultivars. Additionally, we also found differences in the estimated water deficit resistance index. These results indicate differences in water deficit resistance, possibly due to variations in cultivars&rsquo; genetic composition

    Estudio de la utilidad de los mapas auriculares de alta densidad y de biomarcadores circulantes de fibrosis miocárdica en pacientes con fibrilación auricular

    INTRODUCCIÓN Los sistemas de navegación no fluoroscópica capaces de realizar mapas de alta densidad (HDM) permiten obtener información precisa de las propiedades eléctricas de la aurícula izquierda durante procedimientos de ablación.Por otro lado, la detección de biomarcadores sanguíneos es una técnica mínimamente invasiva que podría permitir caracterizar la fibrosis intersticial miocárdica (FIM), elemento clave en la fisiopatología de la fibrilación auricular (FA).En este sentido, niveles circulantes elevados de propéptido C-terminal del procolágeno tipo I (PICP) y un bajo cociente entre el telopéptido C-terminal del colágeno tipo I y la metaloproteinasa de matriz tipo 1 (CITP:MMP-1) han sido correlacionados con la extensión y el entrecruzamiento del colágeno tipo I miocárdico, respectivamente. Además,la combinación de niveles elevados de PICP y baja relación CITP:MMP-1 (patrón CD+CCL+) se ha asociado a eventos adversos en pacientes con insuficiencia cardíaca (IC). OBJETIVOS Crear un protocolo específico para la realización de HDM en pacientes candidatos a ablación de FA para evaluar seguridad, detección del sitio de reconexión de las venas pulmonares, caracterización de las propiedades eléctricas de la aurícula y predicción de la evolución de la FA. Analizar la relación entre los niveles circulantes de PICP y CITP:MMP-1 con la prevalencia, incidencia y recurrencia post ablación de FA y su relación con las características eléctricas de la aurícula izquierda MÉTODOS Realizamos HDM previo a la ablación de FA. Los resultados se compararon con una cohorte de pacientes sometidos a ablación guiada por mapas electroanatómicos convencionales.Para cada paciente se estimó: El voltaje medio auricular (Vm) y el valor absoluto de la pendiente del histograma de los voltajes (VSlope).Estudiamos además la relación entre los niveles en sangre periférica de PICP y CITP:MMP-1 con la FA en 2 cohortes, 1 de pacientes con IC de origen hipertensivo y otra con FA sometidos a ablación. RESULTADOS En comparación con los mapas electroanatómicos convencionales, la utilización de HDM no prolongó el tiempo de procedimiento (P=0,4) ni se asoció a un aumento de complicaciones (P=1), permitiendo una detección más precisa de los gap de reconexión (39,6% vs 60,9%, respectivamente; P=0,001). Los pacientes con recurrencia de FA presentaron un Vm menor (0,71±0,4 vs 1,22±0,6 mV; P<0,0001) y un VSlope mayor (mediana [rango intercuartílico]: 0,90 [0,65-1,25] vs 0,57 [0,45-0,79]; P=0,0003) que los pacientes que permanecieron libres de arritmias. Los pacientes que progresaron de FA paroxística a persistente presentaron basalmente valores de Vm más bajos (0,37±0,25 vs 0,95±0,30 mV; P=0,01) y de VSlope más elevados (1,65 [1,29-3,10] vs 0,66 [0,51-0,84]; P=0,03) que los pacientes que presentaron recurrencia como FA paroxística. Además, los que presentaron taquicardia auricular macroreentrante (TAMR) post ablación tenían basalmente un VSlope mayor (1,30 [0,95-2,84]) que los pacientes con recurrencia de FA sin TAMR (0,73 [0,58-0,97]; P=0,003). En pacientes con IC, un patrón CD+CCL+ se asoció con una prevalencia 3 veces superior de FA en comparación con los CCL-CD- (OR=3,32 [95%CI: 1,25-8,83], P=0,01) y con un aumento en la incidencia de FA de nuevo diagnóstico (chi-cuadrado=8,1 en la prueba de log-rank, P=0,01). Además, se asoció a mayor riesgo de recurrencia de FA post ablación (chi cuadrado de la prueba log-rank 14,5, P=0,001). Por último, comparando con el resto de los pacientes, los CCL+CD+ exhibieron menor Vm (0,75±0,39 mV vs. 1,15±0,67 mV; P=0,005) y mayor VSlope (mediana: 0,62 [0,45-0,93] vs 0,92 [0,56-1,21]; P=0,04) CONCLUSIONES Los HDM permiten la identificación de alteraciones auriculares asociadas a recurrencia y progresión de la FA tras un procedimiento de ablación. Un perfil de biomarcadores de FIM compleja se asocia con signos de remodelado auricular, así como con una mayor incidencia, prevalencia y resistencia al tratamiento de la FA

    Hardening Blueberry Plants to Face Drought and Cold Events by the Application of Fungal Endophytes

    Harsh environmental conditions derived from current climate change trends are among the main challenges for agricultural production worldwide. In the Mediterranean climatic region of central Chile, sudden occurrence of spring cold temperatures in combination with water shortage for irrigation (drought) constitutes a major limitation to highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) plantations, as flowering and fruiting stages are highly sensitive. Hardening crops may be achievable by boosting beneficial interactions of plants with microorganisms. Inoculation with symbiotic fungi isolated from plants adapted to extreme environments could be a good strategy, if they are able to maintain functional roles with non-original hosts. Here, we evaluated the effect of two Antarctic fungal endophytes (AFE), Penicillium rubens and P. bialowienzense, on the tolerance of V. corymbosum plants to cold events in combination with drought under controlled conditions. Inoculated and uninoculated plants were exposed for a month to one event of a cold temperature (2 °C/8 h) per week with or without drought and were evaluated in physiological, biochemical, and molecular variables. A complementary set of plants was kept under the same environmental conditions for two additional months to evaluate survival as well as fruit weight and size. There was an overall positive effect of AFE on plant performance in both environmental conditions. Endophyte-inoculated plants exhibited higher gene expression of the Late Embryogenesis Abundant protein (LEA1), higher photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm), and low oxidative stress (TBARS) than uninoculated counterparts. On the other hand, plant survival was positively affected by the presence of fungal endophytes. Similarly, fruit diameter and fruit fresh weight were improved by fungal inoculation, being this difference higher under well-watered condition. Inoculating plants with fungal endophytes isolated from extreme environments represents a promising alternative for hardening crops. This is especially relevant nowadays since agriculture is confronting great environmental uncertainties and difficulties which could became worse in the near future due to climate change
